Hi Folks, a couple months ago I've reached out to the community for tips on how to get my hands on an engagement ring (the smart way)! Many of you all suggested I search online, and even have the Diamond sent over to DKJ to have a custom ring setting created.

Well yesterday I've reached out to them and had the pleasure to speak to Amy. She was really helpful and had offered that they can even do that part of the job for me and search for a loose diamond through online websites like JA and BN and then do whatever it is that they do to see if that Diamond can be purchased elsewhere for a cheaper price.

Anyways, that sounds all nice and dandy, but I am really not familiar with this. Is it really all that simple? It just sounds too good to be true. I guess I am posting here just to (kind of) run this by you all to make sure that I cover all of my ends and not run into any unfortunate scenarios.

Thank you!

Many of the stones advertised by the various retailers are virtual inventory and can be accessed by jewelers. So yes, DK can potentially source the same stone for you and subs even best the price. However, I would make sure that you are not giving up other benefits like upgrade options. Otherwise, David and Amy are super nice to work with.

I think it's a mistake to do that unless you have given them strict parameters for the cut of the stone. Most people will get the stone narrowed down here on the forum and then you can see if they can offer a lower price to call in the stone from JA or BN. But you will lose the upgrade policies at those jewelers, but theirs aren't great anyway unless you will pay double for the secon stone.

It didn’t even cross my mind that I may lose the upgrade option. I’m glad I posted, thanks.

To answer your question, no I do not plan to spend double to upgrade. So the upgrade I must keep.

Anyways, I guess I was considering have DKJ do the work for me because a) I can’t rely on myself to chose a diamond and b) I was hesitating to ask the community to chose a diamond for me with my budget. And i figured if someone like DK can do it, then I can save everyone time

Definitely work with DK on the setting, but I wouldn’t hesitate to have this wonderful community help you on a stone search. I’ve seen many remarkable finds by the experts here for all ranges of budgets. Plus, you will also have the added assurance that you’re getting the most value/quality for your dollars. =)2

Often we are more particular about the cut of the diamond than most jewelers, with the exception of superideal cut vendors! So I would be very cautious!

Don't agree to a stone without posting the GIA report here first!

A question regarding upgrade policies: If i were to buy a diamond from say WF and have it set with another jeweler, would I lose the upgrade option? Does the upgrade option only apply if i get both the setting and the diamond from WF (just using them as an example since I see their upgrade policy praised a lot)?

David has done a number of diamond purchases for me. He has also appraised stones I've bought elsewhere. Since he's been buying and selling stones all his adult life, I would trust his judgment; he's bought me some lovely side stones more than once and his prices were excellent.

I bought an E VS2 stone a while ago and sent it to him for setting, and he called me and said "I know you - and you're not going to be happy with this." I thought - how bad can it be? It's an E VS2! But the ring came and, sure enough, I sent the stone back. I sent him another stone whose grading I wasn't 100% convinced about, and he tested it for color, and said he felt it was a grade lower than it had been sold to me as. When I told him it had been graded one grade whiter than he thought it was, but that the official grading seemed incorrect to me, we talked about the differences in color grading between AGS and GIA. It was an education.

Anyway, all that to say, tell him what you're looking for. He has an excellent eye, and his father was a very well known diamond cutter, so David's experience is very deep.

David is great! I am in the market for a new EC and plan on having him do the setting. Will be very interested to see if he can beat the big vendor prices! Will follow your journey:)

Diamond upgrade policies have nothing to do with the setting. If you send a ring back to have the diamond upgraded, they check the stone for any damage since you have had it. If there's a chip or something, they'll take some from the upgrade credit to repair the stone. Or I guess if it was severely damaged, they wouldn't take it back. But I have never heard of the latter happening, and it's rare for the chip scenario, as well. So where the setting comes from is irrelevant. The main advantage to having the diamond vendor set a stone is that they take responsibility in the very rare event that the diamond is damaged during setting. But I have been here for over 12 years, and I can't think of a case of that happening. If the jeweler setting the stone did not also sell the diamond, they often don't cover the stone for damage.

Post your budget and wants and lets see what we can find. We loooove a challenge =)2

Hi Everyone, I've just created a new thread. I've posted what I am looking for as well as my budget. Although I know it is probably too much to ask, but I do hope you can help a stranger out. I would grately appreciate it!

For anyone else who finds their way to this thread:

Apparently David has always offered an upgrade policy, but is in the process of finalizing something that he will put up on his website. I'm not sure what it will be, so will not attempt to speak for him. Just something that might be helpful for others to know, and something worth asking about, should anyone else find their way to DKJ for diamonds.

Have you found out if he can beat the big online vendors? So curious as I have found a diamond I like sold by many online vendors but want to know if DK can beat it or is it a waste of time:???:
