Is yellow gold under-appreciated?

I think she just meant you said they didn't value platinum but they didn't know about it until the 18th century so it wasn't a fair statement in the sense that they didn't NOT value platinum, they just didn't know about it. It doesn't change the fact that for millennia and across countless civilizations people valued gold and made beautiful objects with it. I take Deborah's point, however said.
Thank you for writing, Imdanny. I don't think that the reason for people's not valuing platinum is germane to the discussion, however. If someone argues that platinum has been valued for longer than gold and it is not true since it was recently discovered or it is not true for some other reason, it is still not true.

It''s personal choice.

I love platinum...the feel and the weight of it. I have had 18k gold rings that have mis-shapen slightly through wearing, so if you go for gold, make sure the band is substantial.

Hi iamdanny,
I don't have much yellow gold, but plan on getting one such piece for my birthday. I'll also be setting my baby Paraibas in yellow gold.
P.S. Thanks for your comment on "unsubtantiated generalisations." I'm glad I'm not hallucinating.

I wasn''t going by anything scientific or 100''s of years from now. I''m only in my late 30''s. I''m going by what I see posted on here, most people post their "hand me down pieces" and they aren''t yellow. My grandmother passed away 2 years ago and she didn''t have ANY yellow gold rings that were handed down. Maybe it was just preference.

I once read a book and in it they required their fancy escorts(I think it was a fiction book called The Little Lady Agency) to NOT wear yellow gold. It was looked upon as cheap. It''s not everyone''s opinion of course. When you look on the antique setting sites frequently posted on pricescope, you see white and platinum all the time so that''s why to me, it''s more of an heirloom quality. It''s just my opinion, nothing more.

Well, I''m glad we got that out of the way. Harriet, no problem.

Well, I'm glad we got that out of the way.

Excuse me? Just what did we get out of the way? Me? Do you want me to attack you, too?

I am kidding, of course! (I always have to explain when I am joking on Pricescope or someone inevitably becomes offended by what, to me, was an obvious joke. Ask Harriet.) As I was writing about gold (versus platinum) in earlier postings I couldn't believe the passion with which I was writing about gold! I mean, it's my opinion on a metal, not my opinion on a war! Then I remembered that the reason I spend much of my day on Pricescope is that I really, really love gold and jewelery. Still...I know when my passionate postings about gold are not really about gold. On some days I may be writing about gold, but the fire within may be coming from anger at a situation I cannot control at home. So...my apologies to makemepretty for any undue passion about gold versus platinum.

I do have to say that I started to get angry at the idea that an escort service thought it knew what good taste was! (Of course it was really just a fiction writer fantasizing about an escort servcie!) I bet that at any party to which a high level courtesan might be escorted there would be wealthy women wearing yellow gold! One would hope that it would be fashionable, of course!

I would get the ring in yellow gold, but that''s just me. ALL of my jewelry is yellow gold. And I''m only 30, so I don''t consider myself "old."

I prefer yellow gold because it looks better on me than white metals do, and I think it really makes the diamonds "pop." Also, I tend to be sensitive to nickel and break out in a rash if I wear jewelry containing nickel, so white gold is not an option. All of my jewelry is 14k YG, except for my wedding set and my RHR, which are all 18k YG. I have never had any desire to switch to platinum or white gold . . . I love my yellow gold!

I actually prefer 14kt YG to 18kt YG. (opposite for WG) The 14kt has a softer look to me, slightly pinker, less yellow. I love the luxury of YG. It has nothing to do with my age.

I think that there are some pieces that really "come alive" in yellow gold. I have earrings and a pendant in mixed metal. The gold is 22k. It makes the pieces glow

Fabulous quote! I have to confess, that reference did pull me up short - I assume (as a died-in-the-wool YG lover) is basically saying that YG makes me look 'cheaper than a whore?'.
Sorry,

I'll laugh in the face of such pretentious, and judgemental snobbery, and carry on my classy (non-whoring) way, wearing my YG with pride.

ETA: actually, my sister, who is not a fanatical jewellery person like me - but does have an opinion, like any other casual consumer - was going on about platinum to me the other day.
She brought it up with me, wanting my opinion: 'what is the big deal about platinum? It looks like stainless steel, like I melted down a fork, into a wedding ring...'
mind you, we are in Australia, where the 'bias' against YG is not as pronounced...
I was surprised at her opinion though, as she works in the very best part of town, and hobnobs with a bunch of finance people...

In person, it''s got a unique (and very beautiful) look, and it''s very heavy. I like it.

What I don''t like, or understand, is how Americans got on this trip about how yellow gold isn''t "good enough." Not only that, but everyone "has to" have platinum. What?

In the early ''70''s, most women had a 1/3 ct diamond, in yellow gold, if they had a diamond at all. Now everyone "has to" have platinum. It''s very pretentious, and quite ridiculous IMO.

YG is probably harder to wear, in that the colour naturally draws attention to itself, and to the shape of the jewellery object, in a way that the silverish reflection of WG / plat does not ...

white metal seems obtrusive, which matches in with our minimalist modern aesthetic...

it would be easier to get YG 'wrong', fashionwise, or to wear too much of it...?

I love yellow gold. I have gone from YG to Platinum to WG and am now returning to yellow again. I am just drawn to it.

I have been looking at wedding rings on the Cartier website and every time I see the thick yellow gold it just makes me smile.

Sorry, that was a typo of course ... I should have said white metal seems LESS obtrusive

I agree with you.

Well, I''ve decided I like white metals, white gold and platinum, after thinking about it. It''s just a personal choice, though, of course. I certainly think yellow gold is great if you like it, is appropriate for some pieces, and has been valued for so long and by so many people that it could never truly be "out of style."

Thanks, everyone.
