Hi, this is my first time buying a diamond online. I went through Blue Nile. It is for an engagement ring, I was planning on popping the question on Christmas Eve. I've already purchased it but I've been reading up on diamonds ever since out of fear I didn't pick a good one. Guess I should have done that before. I now know that weight doesn't correspond to size. It's only a .33 and will be on a 2mm band but I wanted a good diamond and one that's not microscopic. It has a GIA and GCAL report. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry to say I dont know very much about princess except that they face up much small than lets say a round stone so a .33 might look more like 1/4 carat .........Hopefully other s PS that know more about this cut will chime in.

It is better to work with better cut then to go with F color or even VS quality as long as the stone faces white and is eye clean you can focus on cut and maybe a slightly larger size
 
No. She has no idea, I just thought it would be nice. I'm a guy and have no idea about this sort of thing.
 
I just know most women have specific ideas on what they want and have thought about their entire life. Princess cut is very specific and as I stated before shows smaller than other cuts. so a .33 round well cut will sparkle and look bigger than a .33 princess....

Have you picked out a setting yet? Is there anyway you can find out what cut your girlfriend would prefer without ruining the surprise, like asking one of her friends or a sister?
 
Yeah, I just went with a classic four claw. I don’t think I can find out. I went with that because she has other rings I’ve bought her so this would be different. The mark-ups here in Australia at a bricks and mortar are extortionate and quality poor. That’s why I’m doing it online, more bang for buck.

What’s the opinion on the GIA and GCAL reports. It should be here later today, but I have time to send it back and repurchase if necessary.
 
I know her pretty well, so round or princess would be the way to go. Do you think I could get a bigger spread with a high quality with the setting for the budget (AU$1000) This cost me AU$700. I know the budget isn't big but she isn't into massive stones so should suit.
 
Roughly. AU$1000 is currently US$917. Agree with good return policy. The Blue Nile Signature comes with lifetime upgrades.
 
That diamond looks great. Would you do four or six claw on a round?

OK, the ring came. It's actually bigger than I thought it would be so I'm keeping it. She doesn't like them too large and I think she'll love this. All that stress for nothing. Glad it's a once in a lifetime thing. phew! Thanks to all that helped. Here's a picture for you:

From the GCAL report, that is the strangest princess I've ever seen, it looks to have significant leakage under the table and the pavilion view is also unusual. Something that looks like this one is much more what I would want to see, compare the "enlarged microphotographs:

Your diamond is too tilted for us to see anything. A round is going to be brighter, sparklier, more fiery... more everything diamond.
 
What do you mean by leakage under the table? I can see what you're looking at regarding the pavilion but I have no idea what this all means. It's actually really sparkly and fiery, to me anyway.

Look at the "enlarged photomicrograph." Identify the table of the diamond, which is the largest facet face up, which is usually a squarish shape. Look inside the area enclosed by this table facet. Identify the brightest area inside the table, it is usually near the center. Identify the grayest (not black) area inside the table, it is usually near the four corners. Which diamond has least amount of bright white area? Which diamond has the most gray area?
