Is my diamond worthless without a certificate?

Hi there,

Really need help here. I bought a diamond ring 2 months agao at Gassan. the diamond is I colour, Pique 1, 0.36 carat, brilliant cut, round. The price paid was euro 500 (including the ring setting)... the diamond ring comes with a just simple card by Gassan stating all the details but no certificate ie..from GIa...am i paying too much for it?

After reading the post here, feel very insecure...help!

It is difficult to judge the price, also without knowing what type of setting you had, as the price you paid included it? By my calculations, you paid just under $ 800 USD for the whole ring, a diamond of similar size, colour and clarity with a GIA report appears to cost around 3- 400 dollars with online prices, stones from brick and mortar jewellers can be more expensive.

My advice is if you don''t want to return the ring, is to not worry and enjoy it! Pricing is so difficult to judge especially with complete rings from brick and mortar jewellers and for a diamond which lacks a grading report, so many variables.

I would not say that you are paying too much. A big part of your cost is the ring, already.

For such a stone, the cost of a certificate would raise the price with another 100 USD, which could well amount to 25% of the cost of the stone (depending on the cost of the ring). Therefore, it is normal that such a stone comes without grading report.

However, all depends on the accuracy of Gassan in assessing colour and clarity.

Thanks for the reply. Well the diamond ring is set on a white gold ring..it got the number "750" engraved at the ring.. not solitaire..it looks like two curve ______@¯¯¯¯ something like this.. this is the first time i bought a diamond ring. actually it was during our honeymoon and we bought the ring without knowing anything about the diamond... possible me and my hb will return to Gassan, Amsterdam again next year. the salesman who sold us the ring said we can trade in the diamond ring if we want to in future. that''s why i''m wondering is it bad bying the diamond without doing any home work before hand... im thinking whether i should trade in the diamond ring and buy other better diamond with actual certificate..but then again need to add more money...

??? if i not mistaken the diamond ring was given discount euro 65 so the price before was euro565.

is all jewerlery shop must give ie. GIA or any certificate (not certificate by their own master of the shop)? would the shop refuse to give a ie. GIA certificate?

what is stones from brick and mortar jewellers?

Pinky, Paul just replied and I would be greatly reassured by his words, he is an expert and professional in the diamond industry so I would take heart from his advice that you did ok!

It depends on the store I suppose as to whether they offer diamonds with a GIA grading report, other labs, or no report at all, but if you wanted to change the stone in the future, you could certainly request a diamond with a GIA or AGS report and see if they can find some for you to see.

A brick and mortar jeweller is the term we use to refer to a shop which sells jewellery / diamonds, as a pose to online vendors, although some are both brick and mortar and have an online inventory.

If you love your ring, then it is not worthless with or without a cert. Even with a cert, a stone that is not large and perfect is not going to hold much resale value. So just enjoy your ring and then when you go back and if you want to trade it in for something better, go for it.

I agree with Paul..., plus the fact that Gassan is a well reputed Co.
Where did you get it at their headquarters or Schiphol airport?
