Is it me or are OEC's more expensive than MRB's now?

I see now you’re looking for 3.5+ ct so it may be too small

This is a great deal, if it's legit. I've never followed this IG poster before. The stone looks decently cut. It may require a little cleaning up under the left side of the center facets, but if I was looking for a higher colored OEC in over 3 carats, I would JUMP on this. It would be worth it to find out what the return policy is.

Thanks for this! Beautiful stone and a great find.

If I was looking for higher color, I would totally go for this! I still think j/k is my sweet spot and I’m hoping for a larger diamond.

You could try calling Martin Sheffield. He and Colin Sheffield (his son perhaps?) are a lot more responsive via the phone versus email.

Or are you working with any other trade people? They could look at Polygon and preview these stones to see if initial photos / videos look good -

Anyone in the trade should be able to get the info for you, including price. Do you know who you are going to for your setting? They would most likely be able to help.

No idea yet. I'm just focused on finding the right stone. I have put feelers out with a few dealers, but none have sent stats on these stones to me.

See if you can prompt them on these :) You can do a quick search on your own, like I did, on the Polygon site too but just no price!

Hi @maryjane04 I'm looking for 3.5+ J/K/L color. With clarity, I'm just looking for eye clean.

This doesn't seem like a tall order. But I'm not having any luck.

For comparison, I found a 4 carat J/SI2 (Excellent Cut) for $21k on James Allen.

OWD is a GREAT vendor and they just posted this - feels pretty close to what you’re looking for. These beauties are out there.

Thanks so much @caolsen ! I am in contact with Adam. This stone is so pretty. Because of the clarity, this stone is at the top of my budget. I just feel like I would be paying for more clarity than I need. Patience is a virtue, right?:loopy:

Ok Ladies, is this facet pattern considered ‘checkerboard’? I’ve got a lead on a similarly faceted stone with a large cutlet. I'd love some feedback on the cut.

In an ideal world, I would prefer a more flowery facet pattern but this stone (possibly) ticks every other box.

I would not say this is checkerboard. I’d say it’s borderline windmilly but also can’t really tell cuz the diamond is tilted.

That looks pretty flowery to me. I see this, attached, as more checkerboard.

Thanks @Spring Day and @Aurora26 . I can’t wait to see the stone irl. It’s going to be at least a week and a half and I’m trying to overanalyze every pic.

These two rings were my favorites from last weekend so I’m hoping that I will like the new one.

Spring Day-is windmilly a bad thing. I haven’t heard OEC described that way before.

I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it as a bad thing but more of a preference. I was sent this diamond by Adam a while ago. it performed fine. Just didn’t have the pattern I was looking for. Thinner under table facets which make it look like a windmill. 55A3AA92-C16B-4B9C-922A-32A35530509A.jpeg

Oh ok thanks-I get it after watching the video.

I am drawn to the chunky facets of OECs. I guess I will just have to assess the stone irl.

I was going to edit my comment but I’ll just respond to yours. I don’t think that your stone in question will be as splintery as the one I linked.

I don't like either of the diamonds. The left has mushy faceting and the right has major leakage.

This will probably be considered Early American cut, and might be borderline circular brilliant/round brilliant by GIA. I think it's more promising than the two in the rings! I don't consider that windmill. When I hear windmill I think maltese cross, but in rounds. Where the arrow shaft gets wider towards the edge as opposed to tapering.

eta: this is what i consider windmill. See how the facets under the table gets wider towards the girdle? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-11ct-CER...532242?hash=item28a3b97552:g:vIYAAOSw0iRfynKg

The one you're looking at will look closer to this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GIA-CERTIF...802805?hash=item23b8b62f75:g:JxYAAOSwP-Jfs~bY

She’s right. I was getting my faceting mixed up. The moment I saw your windmill example I was like oh yea... This is what happens when I give advice on 2 hours of sleep.

Thanks for the feedback ladies. I wish I could take you to see the ring with me! I’m afraid to make a mistake.

Thoughts on large cutlets? Or is it just a matter of preference?

Well, I hope you get a good night’s sleep @Spring Day!

Hopefully, I can get a good assessment of the stone. It’s being sold in an elaborate bezel setting.

I am not a fan. From this photo it appears the faceting isn't well defined or crisp and the pattern more random than I personally like. Not checkerboard patterning. But I would like to see this one in action with videos and more photos too. You want to evaluate the light play across the stone and see the on/off pattern and is it a bright stone. Much better to evaluate in action.

The more you see the better you will get to know what you like and what to look for. It is just a matter of seeing as many as you can. Looking forward to seeing the one you choose.

I’d agree with the Early American too. I know there’s no definitive definition of when an OEC becomes an EAC but too me, and OEC needs to have either checkboard or flower/tulips facets.

As a rule when I start to see facets that create length, drawing my eye in a linear fashion versus a geometric away away from the culet, not too it, I start thinking early American cut.

And that’s not a good of bad thing, just how I try to make sense of them in my head.

This is a small diamond, .52 D VS but even in this non magnified photo you can see the pattern isn’t straight line based, it’s more flower petal based. Now, that said GIA calls this a circular not an OEC because one of the angles is off by one degree.

This stone is a EAC, Tranny cut. Culet is still open but you see. A lot of triangles and straight lines versus the boxes or squares of a OEC.

I own both of these stones, they are both lovely - but why you’ve got to see a bunch of old cuts and/or work with a vendor you trust is these were both sold honestly as OECs. One is plainly an OEC (it’s period original Art Deco) but the GIA says it’s not. And the other - welll, it’s not an OEC to my eye but being as there’s no standard for an AEC, it got lumped in as an OEC because it’s not an OMC and not a modern round but it’s a period original filigree die cast platinum ring.

I hope this helps.

My thinking on culet size that is it’s like pornography according to the Supreme Court, you’ll know it when you see it. It’s all about proportions for that stone - you’ll know when you think it’s way too big or too small, but there’s no hard and fast rule that I’ve ever seen.
