Inherited diamond. What is the cut like?

Hello all, was lurking, now posting. I have inherited a diamond which was purchased in 2002 from Tiffany in Chicago. It's in the Tiffany classic setting. The certificate (only Tiffany, not GIA or AGS) has the following details:

Round brilliant
Color I
Clarity VS2
0.82ct
6.00 x 6.03 x 3.72 mm
Crown angle 34.6
Pavilion depth 42.7 (doesn't say anything about pavilion angle which is what I usually read about on here - calculating it using tan-1(number/50) as I read online suggests it may be 40.5?) ARGGH editing again as other reading suggests it might be 40.6, anyone know)
Table 55%
Depth 61.8%
Girdle - medium to slightly thick, faceted
Culet - none
No fluorescence
VG symmetry
VG polish

Obviously am very grateful for this unexpected gift and will value it regardless, but as it needs a good clean (the back is quite caked with dirt...) was just curious as to how it might scrub up and measure up by PS standards. I asked at Tiffany when I dropped it off for sizing and just got the "all our diamonds are exquisite cut" shpiel back which I know from reading here isn't true.

Also for those who have the Tiffany classic setting would be interested to know if it's easy to wear, whether it gets in the way etc. It felt VERY obtrusive when I tried it on but I'm used to a plain band and it's much too big right now. But I would like to wear it regularly.

TIA

I will definitely take one when I get it back! It's with Tiffany now, but I didn't take photos beforehand as the back of the diamond is completely opaque :eek-2:

Wow - that is what you call a dirty diamond! Looking forward to your pictures!

PA probably a touch over 40.6 ~ should be in the "ideal" zone.....

HI:

Luckie duckie. Lovely inheritance. What size is your finger?

My Tiffany rings are very easy to wear and beautiful to boot. I second hand shots.

cheers--Sharon

@MissGotRocks yeah I was embarrassed to take it in like that but didn't want to give it a scrub in case I knocked something loose! Once I get it back all clean I will be sure to keep it that way.

@freddyboston thanks for pulling that info, that's so helpful. I've not heard of that software before. Wow it sounds like it might be a decent cut after all. Sheer luck as I don't think my relative would have known anything about cut back then.

@canuk-gal thank you that's great to know. My finger size is 4. It's actually a sad story behind the inheritance but it's been long enough now (7 years) that the family is healing and it feels right to share out the jewelry. My cousins did not want this one as it was "boring" - lucky for me!

Ha - boring! There are a ton of ladies that would loved to be bored with that ring. Glad it went to someone that can truly appreciate it!

OH and now I am thinking about a band to pair it with.

I wear my original wedding band which is a 4mm thick yellow gold band and definitely won't go. I plan to get a slim plain platinum band to wear with it. I found these pictures on PS member Butterfly17's old thread which shows the two options I am thinking of - 2mm band or knife edge. Any thoughts which looks better?

The knife edge band matches the style of the engagement ring, but honestly either style would work. Maybe you can try on the bands when you pick up the ring from resizing?

I know!! To be fair there were some much more striking and eye-catching pieces. Eg there was a lovely silver Mikimoto pendant from the 70s, with pearls shaped into a cluster of grapes within a silver surround (actual silver, not gold or platinum which I found interesting). Will try to get a photo. I am a simple soul who likes plain things so this worked out well.

It sounds lovely but probably just a certain occasion piece. The ring you got can be enjoyed every day!

HI:

LOL boring. maybe it was the dirt that turned them off. Regardless, it looks to be well cut and it will be fabu once cleaned and polished . You'll stare at it all day long.

I have a 2mm yellow gold Tiffany band that does look good with the Tiffany ER, but I bought the band to wear with my Cartier sapphire ring which is yellow gold. The Tiffany ER is platinum. Point is, the proportions are good.

cheers--Sharon

Lol there was no offence meant by my cousins - they are more flamboyant and love colour, patterns, and "statement pieces" of which there was plenty. While I'm there in my neutrals and no make-up or jewelry. They were right that I'll appreciate it more. I am excited to see what it will look like when cleaned up!

I hope the sizing will be OK from 6.5 to 4. Presumably Tiffany would have said if it's going to be a problem..? They just checked it over and booked it in.

Weirdly the knife edge band seems no longer for sale by Tiffany, so that may be my decision made for me!

I ran it through the HCA with the pavilion angle suggested by @freddyboston of 40.6 and got this:

Light return: Excellent
Fire: Excellent
Scintillation: Excellent
Spread: Very good

HCA score: 0.8 - Excellent - within TIC range

Off to search for TIC range now but that sounds promising :)

“Tolkowsky Ideal Cut” and you're in both the AGS Ideal + GIA EX zones......

If you don't mind used, here's the knife-edge band close to your size--4.25--for $267: https://www.therealreal.com/product...any-co-platinum-knife-edge-wedding-band-owd4w

HI:

FWIW, I did not buy the Tiffany knife edge wedding band as I did not like the feel of it. Looked great. Personal thing.

cheers--Sharon

Thank you, that's helpful to know. Do you wear yours with a band? I would love to see a picture if so.

No I don't. I wear it paired with my Tiffany True Fancy yellow diamond ring. See if I can find some pictures.

HI:

Some pictures here with the 2mm yellow gold band.

Sorry, I have no wish to hijack your thread.

cheers--Sharon

Oh thank you for finding that! I don't mind used at all. The size would be fine as I prefer a bit loose. Silly question but can I rely on The RealReal for it being authentic...? I wouldn't know how to spot a fake myself.

I don't know much about brands and how to authenticate them, but there are many PS thread about TRR--possibly it's been discussed? For that price, I would be willing to risk it myself. But you may care more than me about it being an authentic Tiffany (rather than just a nice platinum band that would go well with the ring).

Maybe some PSers who know brands and are careful about authenticity will weigh in...

Thank you. I just threw caution to the wind and bought it! As you say at that price, it's worth the risk. Even if it's a fake, as long as it's real platinum that'll do.

@canuk-gal your rings are so beautiful!! Thank you for posting the link. You're not hijacking in the least, I'm very grateful.
