Inherited diamond. What is the cut like?

Well, good news and bad news.

Good news - it's cleaned up beautifully and is stunning.

Bad news - it's been resized to 4 rather than 4.25 (OK, perhaps everyone measures a little differently) and the T&Co stamp is partly rubbed out (fixable I'm sure).

My main concern, though, is the base looks thinner than the rest of the ring. I didn't take photos from this angle before sending it away so can't say for sure if it is thinner than it was. Does this look normal to you? If not, can they actually fix it or is the metal not replaceable?

I emailed the T&Co Service Centre a week ago but haven't heard anything. Just emailed them again. I'm a bit wary of sending it back given that it took a month last time, and the courier left it in our open porch, no signature or tracking or anything.

i would have thought they would have put the Tiffny stamp back on ?
if you arnt worried about that i would find a good local jeweller, your town will have them, you just need to ask around your friends -perhaps some one older

Thank you - I worry that if it's worked on by a different jeweler Tiffany will refuse to work on it in future? Plus I've already paid for the resizing and don't want to pay twice!

I think I will make the trek into a store tomorrow and see what they say.

Yeah best to talk to them in person.

Thanks. I took it in. They were friendly enough, didn't comment as to whether they thought there was anything wrong (they squinted at it a while and said the band does usually taper) but said they wanted me to be happy with it so sent it off. Another 3-4 week wait now, we'll see.

I don't think I would buy an expensive item new from Tiffany after this experience, unless it was my size off the shelf!

Well, at least it should be the right size when it returns. That setting does taper so they are not being insincere. It is a shame the wait is so long - would be nice if they would expedite it since it is the second time!

Thank you @MissGotRocks - honestly I didn't think they were being insincere, they genuinely seemed unsure themselves as to whether this was normal. What do you think looking at it...?

If it's normal and likely to hold up over time, I don't mind. I just didn't want to leave it and then have no recourse if it wears through in future (if that's like to happen).

Well, you could always ask to compare it to another engagement ring in the store when it comes back. The setting tapers from a knife edge to a rounded shank in back. If they are doing the resizing, it should come back perfectly.
