I don't really get a "Liberace" kind of vibe when I browse Leon Mege's amazing pavé work.

CZ cocktail rings on the other hand...

Marquise cuts
Pear cuts
diamonds {or other stones} grouped together in an illusion set to look like one stone
"Colors of Gold" what''s that about?
Initial rings {big w/ my sils and mil--they looked at me with pity because I didn''t have one!
31.gif

Smokey topaz or quartz

I can''t really say I "dislike" anything. Over the years, i''ve developed an appreciation for pave, split shanks, various cuts and ornate. BUT, there''s no way I can pull off wearing anything other than simple. Something that''s too pretty/feminine looks weird on me.

Gosh, whatever happened to...
Respecting diversity...
If you can''t say anything nice...
To each his own...

I can''t believe this thread exists on PS, which has a culture of being sooooooooooooooooo PC and nice I was starting to think you were all Stepford wives.
Anything one person does not like could be the next poster''s favorite.
They could even accuse you of being a snob for not liking this or that ... but since you asked ... and the thread has not been deleted yet ...

Diamond not eye clean or yellow or brown in color.

Poorly-cut diamonds are my #1 pet peeve; they are like a car made square wheels because the square shape saves more of the rubber, or fit better in a shipping container.
Talk about putting the cart before the horse. A wheel should roll and a diamond should handle light well.

Any diamond that is dirty - Designs that are impossible to keep diamonds clean in, like eternity rings

Melee Rings that are so thin they look like they''d bend if you shook the person''s hand, to me form should follow function

Marquise diamond set east west looks like a cyclops eye staring at you

Pavé, shudder, it reminds me of Liberace

Men''s rings that have dollar signs or otherwise look like something a pimp would wear

Any men''s rings worn on the pinkie

More than one earring in an ear

Designs (at ANY price) that try to look more expensive than they are, halos or 4 tiny princess cuts mounted to look like one large one - I''d rather proudly wear one nicely cut small, low color, low clarity solitaire of the same budget

Diamonds in dental grilles, sorry I know it is just a style but anything inside the mouth freaks me out, including pierced tongues

Busy, overly intricate diamond settings with a zillion diamonds everywhere in every conceivable nook and cranny with extra nooks and crannies added for extra diamonds to hide in and surprise diamonds hiding behind other surprise diamonds, with tiny diamonds lining all three sides of every prong the main diamond which can''t be very good because there isn''t much budget left over for the main diamond; some even have a row of melee next to the skin - all I think when I see them is how they could have put all that money towards a nicer main diamond, oh and how that ring is going to spend 99.99999% of it''s life encrusted in gunk.
I like a max of two side stones hugging the main stone.

But, to each his or her own.
2.gif
You are so fussy! I won''t leave the house without my $-shaped pave crusted inside and out ring and I look so much nicer now my grilles have been blinged-up a little.

I''m not a fan of visible arrows in round diamonds, and I prefer white metal to yellow. There''s nothing I really dislike, though.

Can''t edit my post for some reason - yikes, looking back that was ingnorant of me

I shouldn''t have made that post as I would never say that to anybody IRL, so I shouldn''t say it in writing either. I wasn''t trying to name anybody and I apologize for that

Be confident and at peace with your choices, then when you learn that others would not make the same choices you don't get offended.
Nobody here is saying their dislikes should be adopted by others.
We are just saying what we don't like and why.
Nobody is putting down a person who makes choices we would not make.

I see holding an opinion and understanding that my opinion only applies to me as just the other side of the coin of accepting diversity.
I'm fine with people not caring for tensions settings.
My goodness, I will still like and get along with person X who doesn't like them.
Jewelry preference is such a small insignificant thing.

If we were petty, competitive, insecure, immature and projected out jewelry into our self-worth this thread could be trouble.
I think this thread is a wonderful indication that we are a healthy and mature group.

Thanks for the sermon Kenny. I was lost without your advice, but now I see the light...

I am confident and at peace now. I am going back to life in Stepford

1. Any yellow gold(because it looks awful with my skin tone)
2. 9ct gold (They still make jewlery out of it here- in many countries it''s not even considered gold!)
3. Anything fake the owner is trying to pass off as real
4. Very very white stones (Just dosn''t do much for me)
5. Very high clarity (not worth the money)
6. Round brilliants (for earings only, I''d rather somthing more interesting)

I''m not a big fan of rubies or emeralds either. The darker ones sometimes tend to look a little lifeless. (ETA: I find this more in the man made stones sometimes)

I do love a well executed garnet though. I think it''s... Pandora''s ring that''s a garnet? Well, forgive me if that''s not the right user I''m thinking of but I LOVE that stone and the setting is lovely.

Ditto on the garnet! I like the rich color of garnet much better than rubies or emeralds.

I tend to like simple things, and I''m idiosyncratic so for ME (no offense to anyone) I dislike--

--lots of cluttery pave that looks as if it''s trying to be art deco, but isn''t

--anything that looks like ''stretching''. As in ''I really wanted a bigger stone but couldn''t afford it so I added this halo, did this illusion setting, put the rock in this bezel, fill in the blank.'' I am not saying that anything is wrong per se with haloes, illusion or bezels, I have seen lots of pretty ones, but I don''t like them when their obvious intent is to make the diamond look like a bigger one at ten paces or more. I have seen this look, oddly enough, quite as often when people have what I would consider to be large stones, may be even more then than when the stone is smaller.

--I don''t like any of the champagne diamonds I''ve seen in real life. they sound as if they should be so pretty, but to me, they look like a beige diamond, kind of dingy. And I don''t like that.

--I also hate the really dark sapphires that are not blue and MOST of the rubies I have seen IRL. My birthstone is actually a sapphire and I don''t have much sapphire jewelry because it is generally so ugly. I have now seen beautiful sapphires in the colored stones thread and would aspire one to one of those. IRL, i have found that stones like garnets (love them), aquamarines and some peridots look a lot better than the so-called ''precious gemstones'' that are generally available even in the rather high end B& Ms.

--I have now seen some white gold that I like, but generally speaking, I''m not a fan. I tend to think that gold should be yellow, as yellow as possible (18 or even 22K) while silver and platinum are white (and I love both). I like things to be what they are.
and I really really hate rhodium plating--it''s probably the thing I hate most in jewelry. to me, anything rhodium plated, whether white gold, or sterling silver, doesnt
look like jewelry anymore. It looks like chrome or some other metal that I would expect to see on a kitchen appliance or on a car, not in my ears or on my hands.
There are no exceptions to that for me. But I have seen un rhodiumed white gold recently that looked quite nice.

I''m a bit idiosyncratic and also I''m not very young and my tastes were formed a long time ago and I tend to be very opinionated. But I repeat, only about what I will wear myself. I hope all the pave fans and white gold fans and people with bezels on Pscope (where I have seen pretty examples of all three) will forgive me.

Each to their own,

but for me personally, this is what I don''t like

Any prongs that are TOO BIG or could be smaller (hubba hubba Leon Mege - I don''t think you will ever fault)

Not the hugest fan of bezel rings. I don''t like James Meyer but I can appreciate why others do. I do like Neatfreaks cushion bezel, but I like the idea that she pairs with with a 3 sided pave band more. I am into the set as a whole.
Having said that, I do own a bezel pendant (BGD Barbara)

I personally don''t like solitaires, I find them a yawn. But I love it when the owner pairs it with a big blingy band or two.

I think I have to agree with Kenny about the shoving diamonds an every surface of a piece of jewelery. I love pave everything, but sometimes its nice to strip the design back a bit.

I don''t like surprise diamonds, I think they are silly and the diamond is usually overshadowed by the thick bezel it is in.

I dispise bead set!!!!!!! I also dispise channel set!!!! I dislike the two strips of metal either side!! Not my cup of tea, but I could probably handle it is if the channel is really thin and delicate and had lovely, well done millgrain!

I think that is all.

I am very particular with my jewelry and have to get nearly everything custom made and micro manage my jeweler! (Unless I sent it to Leon Mege, which I wish I could) Then I would step right back.

Oh those rings with randomly placed melee (aka champagne) just remind me of skin blemishes.
Sorry.

I pretty much like/can appreciate anything as long as it's well done and made with quality materials. There was a topic similar to this in CS a while ago, I'll see if I can find it. I'm not really a fan of illusion settings, huge windows in cs, and super dark or light rubies and emeralds usually (or really dark sapphires). Other than that I can't really think of anything else. I actually really like a lot of the things people mentioned that they don't like, I love cabs (obviously, lol) and E-W settings.

Kenny, I love you! You're so funny, and you remind me of a couple of my friends IRL :)

ETA: Found the CS thread, LINK.

expensive quartz watches.

Okay, I''ve been lurking quietly, reading this thread, because I agree with risingsun -- people''s feelings can get hurt in threads like this.

But then along comes DF with this...and I have to agree. I''ve never understood the point of spending so much money on the outside of the watch when the inside is only slightly better than a kid''s battery-powered toy. Mechanical watches rule.

However, I do wear a Raymond Weil quartz for day-to-day wear. But it wasn''t "expensive" as far as watches go.

Okay, I''m sorry if I offended anyone. Back to lurking!

And, Kenny, I have to say the Liberace and pave comment cracked me up. You are bad!

I never imagined this thread would be taken personally - it was only asking about personal taste - not about what you find "tacky" or "not worth the money" or something else judgmental - personal taste is not a judgment!

ETA: I could 'not like' something in jewelry for myself and still find it beautiful when worn by someone else - this happens often!

Hey guys, I already called myself out!! I'm not personally offended by any of these comments. No need to find drama where none was intended
