Is this what you mean by velociraptor prongs?

Chomp, chomp.

ETA: And, Kenny, is this what you meant by "diamond grille"?

Aggh, PS is not letting me add photos. Later.

Great images ... but not quite what I meant. I think you illustrated what I *said* perfectly .. maybe I *meant* Transformer prongs??? Those big chunky blocky jaw peg-head type monster solitaire prongs -- even more terrifying in white metals because of their giant robotic jaw power seemingly crushing the stone ("I''m crushing your head. I''m crushing your head": Kids In The Hall style)

Oh No!
I certainly hope that''s not yours because that is one butt-ugly ring.

Imagine Marlon Brando...
The horror.

A waste of perfectly good baguettes. No, it's not mine. I found it last night on a website-that-shall-not-be-named that sells vintage and estate jewelry. It is a horror, but I would pay to know the story behind it...Christmas gift? Prelude to a divorce gift?

I saw it, and, thought -- teeth!! Diamond teeth!

Deco -- is this what you meant? If so, I agree! The setting in this pic is awful but it shows the prongs well.

Oops, a pic would help!

Nothing perplexes me more than a $3K setting housing a $1K center stone..Personally, I don''t "get it".

- Shallow cut with huge window
- Black Tahitian pearls
- Reconstititued lapis or turquoise
- black opals that look like jelly
- zircons
- blue topazes
- cocktail rings
- lazer-drilled diamonds
- heart shapes unless it is absolutely stunning stone (1 once saw a 7-ct Namibian mandarin spessartine cut in a heart shape...I could do with it!)
- anything with a grey or brown modifier
- I like modern settings but sometimes they are outre. I recently saw a pic. of unheated sapphires that looked like old soap on strings of red crochet. It won a prize, but to me it looke horrible
- combining WG and YG just for the sake of combining
- seed pearls
- poor cuts creating horrible extinction
- poorly matched earrings
- I prefer unheated stones

And many other things

I am leaving out anything that is poorly made/loudly fake/poorly cut etc and am just going to list some of my "just because it's not my taste" dislikes - I appreciate that many people love the following and they can look terrific on others.

* Heart shaped stones
* Heart shaped prongs
* Princess cuts
* High prong settings (without cathedral sweep/integrated head)
* Multi-row micropave (especially domed)
* Halos
* Dangly earrings (the ones with a single stone suspended from a hoop or other fastener)
* Cluster settings
* Very thin shanks on solitaires - especially with large stones
* Multiple stone rings (esp 3 stone) where the outermost stones go past the outer boundary of the finger (does that make sense?)
* "Wavy" rings
* Pink and light blue stones
* Pinky rings

I am super duper fussy though, my friends often comment that they would be scared to buy me jewellery!

Heart, Princess, Marquise or Pear shape stones.
Really big or chunky halos.
Clunky prongs.
Channel set bands
Alternating stone shape and color bezel eternity bands
James Meyer settings (don''t shoot me!)
Soldered erings and wedding bands
When more than three bands are stacked.
Men''s bands that look like class rings (with a big colored center stone).

I have to agree with everyone else in that my opinions regarding what I enjoy (on others) has changed dramatically over the last year. I see things everyday that I find beautiful and interesting but would not personally wear.

What I don''t like on my husband or myself:

*men''s rings that look like a woman''s ring
*pinky rings
*rings on every finger
*more than one "solitaire setting" on the same finger
*thick bezels
*rubies
*man jewelry (besides rings, watches)
*marquise stones set north to south
*heart cut stones
*orange anything
*DIRTY JEWELRY (I want to take my cleaner to work and clean the green stuff out of everyone''s rings!)

The usual disclaimers of not trying to trash-talk or hurt anybody''s feelings apply. That said, Things Circe Does Not Like:

- stones under a half-carat in high prong settings drive me nuts - they would look so much better low and in bezels! When they''re tall and pointy all I can think of is the killer engagement ring.

- crooked prongs make me want to shake the jewelers. Bad workmanship in general does, really.

- dirty diamonds. One friend who had a for-real colorless synthetic diamond showed me her e-ring a few months after she''d gotten engaged, and the poor thing was so soap-begrimed it looked like it had a frosted pavilion. Oh, the humanity.

- halo settings with large melee - it''s not that they look like cluster rings, which I sometimes like, it''s that they look like they''re trying too hard to make the stone look bigger, whereas small halos look decorative and lovely to me

- rings built to look like 3 bands - why not just *get* three bands?!?

- mickey mouse ears on stationary pendants. If the loops are 1/3 as big as the stone or bigger? Get thee to Disneyland!

- diamond-cut anything (well, other than diamonds).

And that''s pretty much it. If we made a "in jewelry I know I DO like" thread, it would be about a gazillion times as long, thanks to PS: before this place, I thought I didn''t like hearts or marquise, among other things. HAH! Now I know better ... a marquise is next on my list.

Very high settings
Rings that make someone have muffin finger
Necklaces that are too short and flip over when someone talks

There are tons of things I wouldn''t buy for myself but I like most of what I see on other people.

1. Yellow gold
2. Round brilliants as center stones (I know, I''m weird)
3. Overly ornate settings
4. Halos with prongs
5. Knife edges
6. Really dark sapphires - I <3 my sapphire RHR - the color is perfect!

I don''t like:

1) any diamonds which were purchased for purely for size, without consideration for color, clarity, cut at all.
2) Dirty settings and dirty diamonds
3) black diamond cluster rings
4) super-soft yellow gold (lots of Asian jewelers carry this because pure 24k gold is prized in Asia)
5) a ton of different gems and different metals worn together

Since coming across Pricescope my list of style ''don''t likes'' has all but disappeared. But there''s always:

Sloppy workmanship
Disproportionately-sized prongs
Very high cathedral settings
Windows or light color saturation in colored stones
Princess cuts *ducks*
1.gif

Black Hills Gold
Nugget Gold anything
Almost Black Blue Sapphires
Extremely tapered thin, needle like prongs (they look to me like they are clawing and scratching the stone)
The almost halo look - pave diamonds under a center diamond but not quite surrounding it.
A halo of colored stones surrounding a colored center gemstone.
Rose Gold
Trilliant diamond sidestones (and I have a diamond ring with them- ick)
Dainty rings
Checkerboard cuts

I don't know how to answer this question without either offending people who have posted at PS or people who it would seem would be only too willing to be offended on behalf of others. I'd like to answer this question but I think I'll pass.

Danny I respect your decision.
I just find this subject very interesting so I wanted to look at it a bit.

Offending is another of those things, like beauty, that is in the eye of the beholder IMHO.
In this situation is is not you who is offending, it is they who are taking offense.

I believe if I am mature and self confident I can accept hearing that others hold opinions and preferences that differ from mine.
When we accept that people vary, and each opinion including our own is equally valid yet each opinion applies only to the person holding it, we get offended less often.

Just because you express your thoughts does not mean you are preaching and converting people.
If they react as though you were, that's on them.

I think it''s just in *how* you say it. For example, I love halos but plenty of people do not. I think there''s a big difference between saying "Halos don''t appeal to me personally" and saying "Halos are gaudy and tacky." I am truly interested in what other people like and don''t like, it''s what makes this site so intriguing!

I think I’m kinda picky about my taste in jewelry. I don’t like:

-Halo settings- Although I have seen 1 or 2 I think are beautiful but for the most part I don’t love them.
-Diamonds that float too high in their setting and leave a huge gap under the culet.
-Pink stones
-Big clunky settings
-Bezel settings that are not perfectly symmetrical. My eyes go right to the non-perfect spots instantly!

What an interesting (and dangerous) thread!

Since joining PS I have come to love *so many* gorgeous exemplars of shapes and styles that I wouldn''t have appreciated before. I can honestly no longer say that I dislike anything, because as soon as I do, somebody will show up with a ring of exactly that style that takes my breath away.
1.gif

There are a couple of things that I struggle with a little bit, however:

First, I struggle with halos. I have one, and I usually love mine and many, many others here on PS, but sometimes I definitely prefer a simpler and less adorned look.

Second, I struggle with the maltese cross effect in very chunky cushions. I loooove the chunky facets of 8-mains and AVCs (and I find those stones just amazing), but in still photos, the windmill effect gives me pause. I would love to see one IRL and observe whether that pattern becomes less prominent with movement and light changes. I think that''s why I am one of the few people who love 4-main cushions ~ the facets are admittedly not as amazing, but on the other hand, I am not distracted by any particular shape that appears secondary to the facets. This is something I want to learn more about. Maybe I need to do some "research" IRL, lol.

Mostly, this thread has made me realize how much my tastes have ''expanded'' since joining PS!

More:

* Any jewelry that is an advertisement for the company that made it. Especially rings that have the names of the company engraved on them - on the outside for all to see! Why?! I don''t like any logo stuff, clothes, bags, etc. never understood why someone would want to wear/carry something plastered with a logo.

*also can''t stand the ''ring on every finger'' look. I wear rings on 1 finger on each hand.

Ditto both of these points! :)

Necklaces that are too short and flip over when someone talks

Agreed - too short necklaces make me it look like people are being choked -I have visions of the necklace becoming sentient and evil

I don''t like these types of threads because someone is probably going to have their feellings hurt. What is the point

I''ll leave quietlly and take my grumpy self elsewhere

Yeah, I agree. I was kind of browsing through seeing some stuff listed that I don''t particularily like and then realized what is the point of possibly insulting what could be a person''s dream ring that represents a life long relationship.

That said, I3 poorly cut stones don''t float my boat. . .don''t see those posted too often, so I guess that''s a safe item to mention.

No one should take this thread personally. GOD if we all loved the same thing, how boring would that be???? Yanno??
Ehhh, now I feel lame for not listing anything. hahaha Cannot win when it comes to threads like these.

My comment - In jewelry, I do not like when a person is spending money on a diamond and calls it a "karat," or "carot." Who has $5,000 laying around to buy a diamond and doesn''t even know the basic spelling of it?

Black diamonds
Dark opaque lifeless sapphires
Thin bands on rings
Poorly cut gems
Visible inclusions
Costume jewelry
Cloudy included diamonds
