I lost my engagement/wedding ring. I have searched my home for a week and have not been able to find it. It must have fallen off while I was shopping that day.I have it insured through JM. We bought it just about 5 years ago for ~9k. My first question is how do you break the news to your spouse that it's missing? He's currently underway at sea. I don't know if I should tell him now or wait. Also, I have not had my ring reappraised since we got it. Is this going to hurt me in the claims process? I know that JM says that they will replace your ring with a like ring. If my ring has gone up in replacement cost over the years am I screwed in getting the same kind of ring again? My center stone was a GH 1.05 marquise SI1. It also had great symmetry and you could see a beautiful bow. Will I get the same kind of thing in return? ring was also pretty unique as well. I began as a solitaire when we got engaged. When it came time to look for a band, I couldn't find anything I liked. The attendant at the shop suggested that I try a bridal set. She showed me the ring that I have (well, had) and after that, that bridal set was never seen again in the display window. I am just so worried. After searching for days to be sure that it wasn't misplaced in my house, I went ahead and filed a police report. The police just filed it under as lost property and don't investigate it. I have also contacted several pawn and jewelry shops with a picture of my ring. I live on the island of Oahu, so there are only so many shops. I think I have done all that I can do. Is replacing my ring going to wind up making my life even more miserable than it already is knowing that I have lost something precious? I have not been able to eat or sleep well knowing it is missing.

Oh, no! I am so sorry - you must feel sick about this.

OK. Have you re-traced your steps in your head? I often find lost items like this. Think about the last time you know you had it, and think about every move you made from then until the time you found it was missing. Are you absolutely sure you didn't absent-mindedly place it somewhere while you, say, took a bath or cleaned the loo? Did you put it in a safe place for some reason? Or did you place it on a ledge or a shelf that you don't normally put the ring on?

You said you must have lost it while shopping. You know which day you lost it, and it's unlikely it would have been lost for more than a day without noticing. Have you gone back to every store? I would also take them pictures of your ring. And also, go everywhere else that you were that day and perhaps the day before - coffee shop, restaurant, etc.

You could also take out a classified ad in your local paper.

Also, have you searched in the sofa cracks? Loads of things slip into sofas. Kitchens and bathrooms are places you might have taken it off. Were you doing any gardening or deep housecleaning that would have motivated you to take it off? Have you had any strangers in the house? If you sleep with the ring on a nightstand, could you have knocked it onto the floor during the night by mistake? I often swipe things off my nightstand when hitting my alarm, and they always bounce WAY under the bed.

Have you checked your shopping bag? Have you been swimming? (I always take my rings off when going to the pool.) Did you take it off and put it in your purse for any reason at all? Have you had any medical tests that mandate no jewellery (e.g. you can't wear metal in an MRI scanner). Just trying to think of all scenarios where you might have taken off your ring. Have you had any pampering sessions, either at home or at a spa? I'd take my ring off for that. What about a gym? If you belong to a gym, could it be there?

Well, I hope you find it. I know you've searched the house, but have you looked into all the dark parts with a torch? It may lurk.

One final thought: You might have lost it in bed. It could have come off and be sitting under the mattress on the bedframe. I think you should check your bedlinen and tear your bed apart.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on xxxx Hope you find it!

It has been missing for a week. I have looked in every possible place in my house. I have lifted all the rugs, looked inside shoes, checked the laundry, all the pockets, cabinets, drawers, closets, the trash, outside, I mean, seriously, you name it, I have searched it! My house is on the beach; I never take it there. I lost it September 9th, but didn't notice that it was missing until Tuesday. I went to Diamond Head area that day for an appointment. Afterwards, the kids and I went to a department store. I remember it on the way there for sure because even after 5 years, I still like to look at it sparkle in the light when i drive. haha. That is the last time I remember it for sure. I have checked my home with a fine toothed comb. I talked to the manager at the department store and gave him a photo of it. He said he would keep it on file and be on the lookout. I asked if I could see any surveillance videos from that time frame I was there, but he told me that he couldn't do that. I just wanted to see it there was a moment where it could have slipped off my finger and someone could have picked it up. The police listed this as lost property because I can't prove that it was stolen property. I have done a lot of work in regard to trying to recover my ring. I have even circulated it on social media in hopes of clues, but that hasn't turned up either. My neighborhood has a community page and I am having a neighbor come to my house with a metal detector to go over my whole house again. That way, at least I can know that I have done all that I can and that my ring really did disappear. I'm really sick to my stomach over it. I just e-mailed my husband and told him the whole dirty truth of it and that way when he comes back home, he won't be bombarded with horrible news. I hope he will be understanding of it. I will continue to keep looking though. I will never stop looking. It's one island and about 1.1 million people...

I am betting your husband will want to know if you're OK. This happens everyday. E-rings are small, lightweight items that people wear on their most-used portion of their body. It wasn't a bright idea for us to put expensive items there, but by golly we do it lol. Be easier on yourself.

Drink a beer. Stop worrying. Call Jeweler's Mutual and start the process.

Good luck!

I've never had to file a claim, so I don't know how JM works.

But the marquise shape hasn't been hugely popular. There have been discussions on there where people said if they were looking for a bargain, they'd try to find a marquise. Many jewelers don't even stock them now. So that may work in your favor if you were underinsured on the lost ring.

Good Old Gold seems to be good at locating diamonds. Maybe contact them. Located in NY, then seem to have access to many sources.

oh gosh I'm so sorry to hear this, you said you checked your house how about your car? Did you check every crack and corner possible in the car? Hope it turns up!

::HUGS::

I'll bet anything Maximus is right - your DH will be much more worried about how *you're* feeling than about you having lost the ring! And he's also right about the stupidity inherent in wearing small, expensive delicates on oft-used limbs :wink2:

I hope it turns up when your neighbour comes by! Sometimes having other pairs of eyes comb the house - even places you've already searched - can work wonders, since they'll be looking from slightly different angles, finding different nooks and crannies...

It sounds to me that you have done the preliminary things well. If you have not already notified JM you should do that now. They will help you through the replacement process. Since they rely on happy clients to give them referrals and repeat business, they have a vested interest in helping you get as close to what you lost as they can.

There may be some issues getting as big a diamond as you lost due to not having gotten the appraisal updated in the past five years, but you can contribute the overage if you wish, or settle for a smaller diamond or a lower quality to keep the new ring within the cost of your appraisal limits.

You may want to talk with the store that did your ring set to see if they can replicate the ring set that you have. It is the ring in the appraisal? If so there should be a good picture of that ring so that if they can not replicate it perhaps you can find someone to custom make it for you.

Good luck.

Wink

I keep looking and looking. I have looked in my car, purses, diaper bag, my kid's toy boxes, under and in furniture, have stripped all the beds, I have looked everywhere really. I have looked good and hard for my ring. I e-mailed my husband and I am awaiting a reply.
Does anyone know anything about the inflation of diamonds in locations like HI? Hawaii is quite inflated on many products, goods and services. Our jeweler is a locally owned business and they were considerably more expensive than mainstream shops but they had much more beautiful jewelry.

you might consider looking online, using one of the preferred vendors here...you won't have to pay the HI inflation prices...

this was just a quick search on James Allen

Do you have cats? I lost an empty semi mount one time. I found it under my bed, dead center in the middle. I had an earring go missing from the dresser, and I found it 'way under the bed, too. My cats did it, I am certain.

I still think you are in a pretty strong buyer's position, looking for a marquise vs. a round. There are nice ones out there from estates and from women who got tired of that look and wanted something different, etc., and there just is not a strong market for marquise. If you have to replace your ring, take your time looking for a deal on the center stone because there is one out there somewhere that someone is eager to sell.

I don't have pets, just kids! I keep my ring our of reach of the baby, but my four year-old can reach anywhere. However, he's a terrible liar and when he takes my things or breaks things, he basically always tells on himself! I even asked him and if he had seen it. He told me flat out no. If he were lying to me he would have avoided answering me. I misplaced my ring once for about a day. It somehow wound up in a the box of Ziplock bags. Along with a neighbor to bring a metal detector, I am also going to get a sitter to watch the kids for a few hours while I tear my house apart one more time.
I wouldn't know where to start as far as not going to my jeweler where we got the ring from. They have been very good to us and I have bought from them for friends and family over the last 5 years. If the marquise is really not a popular cut anymore, I may be able to still get a like replacement. I remember when we went looking, the owner about to leave on a trip to a diamond exchange in NY so he picked two stones and I chose between the two stones he brought back.
Obviously, I love the marquise! I like the old style charm of it and I think that it has a presence. A good marquise also looks bigger than what it really is as well. My ring has received many compliments over the years. I miss it.

When you get the metal detector go over any shopping bags that you have from when you went shopping including the ones you bought for your kids and any items that might have come in those bags (that now aren't in them any more) especially the kids items, check diaper bags inside the house, kids backpacks, your own purse any and all bags you can remember that went with you in the car that day. Did you throw any shopping bags out or put then somewhere, check where they all might be.

Also take the metal detector out to the car and check in any area where it could have brushed against a bag of any type so think shopping bags, diaper bags kids backpacks etc and come off in the car. Check between the crevices of and underneath child seats and pockets in the back of the car little hands could jam things, and all the compartments of the car.

I have the word "bag' over and over and also the suggestion of something to do with the car, and something to do with the kids.

The metal detector didn't pan anything out because I live in a house that was built on concrete slab and there is a lot of metal underneath I guess. the floor kept going off like crazy! I am resorting to searching again. Tonight I moved every appliance in my kitchen and looked under them. I also opened up ever cabinet and searched through them. I am just going to clean a room a day and continue to await the response of my husband. This is a picture of what I lost! It isn't so shiny in this photo because it was dirty.

Oh I'm so sorry. That is such an unusual ring. Maybe take a look on Etsy for similar styles? There are a lot of unusual designers with a similar flair to your ring.

Big hugs. I can imagine how devastated you must be!

Please read Arkieb1's post. She has helped other people find lost items. Best of luck to you. I can only imagine how upsetting this must be. (((hugs)))

Do you know the famous quote in the movie Ghostbusters II ?...........Sxxt happens!
Sorry for your loss, I know it has sentimental value, but you are OK, your kids are OK, all OK, right!
So go ahead and put in a claim with JM and move on. Hey, that is the purpose of insurance.
Again, sorry for your loss.
PS vendors can help

Yes, it is unusual, that is why I liked it so much. What you can't see in the picture is that under the center stone along the base are also six round yellow diamonds also. WIllyDiamond. I know. I am glad that basically everything else in my life if just fine. I guess you have to have something not so good happen to you every now and then to balance things out and keep things into perspective.

Turn off the lights at night and crawl around with a flashlight. Even the slightest glint will light up.

I also like marquise rings. That's a gorgeous wedding set. No wonder you are so upset. I hope you find it.

I have contacted JM and have begun the claims process. I will let you all know how that goes works out. I have seen on the forum that people have questions and are curious about the claims process. I was deeply saddened to have to make the call. After another night of sleeping for only 3 hours, I pushed the button. I will keep up my search, but I am tired from not feeling whole.

I have submitted my claim with all the required info. I had to sign a statement telling JM how the loss occurred. My husband, who is also on the policy had to prepare a statement as well. I also had to submit a police report and get a statement from the place where I think I lost it. I also contacted the jeweler where I originally bought it from. Although the claim is still being processed, my jeweler has been able to look back in his accounts and has located the maker of the bridal set.He said that he is still searching for a suitable marquise for me. When he finds some I might like, he'll let me know so I can choose.

This is good news, OP!
I'm sorry that you lost your ring, but I'm glad that you will be able to duplicate it, if need be. Let us know how easily (or not) JM handles your claim. Best of luck to you! :))

UPDATE:

It is now December. I am still waiting. The ring had to be remade from scratch. I was told that it will be ready next week. It has been a long process. I even had arguments with JM over what they were replacing. JM approved my claim and then turned around and told the jeweler that they were only replacing my engagement ring. I had to play phone tag with the representatives to find out who told my jeweler this fallacy. It all got straighten out after a couple of days. It was quite aggravating. I am hoping my ring will be ready next week as I was told because we are moving next week as well. (We are moving from HI to the mainland). I will be very happy to have my ring again!
