Like Maria I''ve been on here for years but am still under 1k in posts, so I doubt anyone would notice if I left!

I do think it''s polite to let people know you''re leaving for good if you''re in the middle of a thread or if some posts haven''t been reponded to. There are a lot of threads here about people wondering what happened to particular posters.

A couple of threads of late have been quite shocking and disappointing and almost made me want to leave, but the lure of the funny, warm and sincere posters always draws me back. Well, that and the sparklies!

I agree with other posters that you tend to develop a thick skin after a while. Shortly after I first joined, a long-time poster responded a little bluntly to a thread I had started and it offended me a bit, but now I know her to be one of the sweetest ladies on here and appreciate her advice. It''s hard to tell tone of voice over the net and I think this is why people tend to get up in arms.

Just my rambling 2 cents worth!

If I were to leave, I'd probably just leave - I'm sure I'd be back! It makes sense for some people to leave, even after having a profound impact on a community like PS. Sometimes you fulfill your purpose somewhere and when it's complete, you've done your work there. I know, for example, in Whitby's case - she left a deep impression on me. Her compassion and insight really made me think and helped me to be a better person. Sometimes her posts made me laugh and there were other times when she made me really dig deep on certain topics.

So wherever people go or whatever they end up doing, I'm always grateful for how they touched my life. In big and small ways, we all affect the world and the people in it. If anything, it reminds me that everything I do is not insignificant. That I must be mindful of my actions and thoughts. That everyone is important and that life and the people in our world are precious.

Ok, I am sure this is probably not needed, but for my own sense of completeness and clarity, I just wanted to state that my previous post (before things in here got bizarre

) was not about Whitby and her situation, even though the thread was created with her in mind. My response was more about the posters who ask for people''s opinions, get upset because they don''t like everything the posters said in response, leave in a huff about the "mean" posters (who weren''t mean, just honest), and then come slinking back after things cooled down (sometimes only to stir the pot up again). Those are the drama queens who I just don''t get and wouldn''t want to emulate. Leaving for any other reason (especially health or family issues) is more than understandable, although I still reckon I''d leave quietly to avoid any possible drama or long goodbyes.

There. Now I feel better.

I do think it is sometimes necessary to explain leaving a) so that others can learn and b) to let those you do talk to know where and why.

Yep, sorry, I am too lazy to go back and check who said this, but I agree if a person does take a break from PS, no matter how long, when coming back it's easy to pick up where everyone has left off, so it's no big deal to take a break. Possibly it's even healthy.

I'm a member of four other forums that I currently post on, but will go weeks without posting on any of them, so maybe if I was a more active member, someone would notice I take breaks. Here, where I post often, I doubt anyone would notice because I'm just kind of on the side-lines and haven't met anyone in RL.

Hopefully this isn't rude, but after being a bit of a drama poster myself, I've learned to no longer start threads of that sort AND I've made a mental note of those who tend to do so and avoid their posts. Mostly because I feel that regardless of the amount of advice given, the person will still have more and more issues and I think it's a waste of my time to type answers that do not get replied to! (To sum up, instead of leaving PS, I've altered my approach to how I interact on the site.)

There are also a few people I avoid because they brag too much! Subtlety is much more elegant and classy. Demonstrating class is more highly respected (in my eyes) than showing off numerous consumer goods. I won't leave b/c of them, just don't bother to open their threads.
