Just bought this beautiful 12.4mm cushion topaz from John Dyer and I’ll love to hear your ideas on how to set it in a ring form.

I plan to wear on my middle or second finger and am a substantial size 9...

Well hullo Ms Pretty!
I see a Rose gold setting, something flowery / vine like because she looks like a flower in blue glory.
Beautiful, looking forward to photos in due course.

When I look at this, I see a snowflake, so maybe something ornate and ‘icy’ in white gold? I’m sure whatever you choose will look great. Love this stone! =)2

I see white metal to let the blue shine.
And a hallo with shiny white diamonds and a plain shank.

Your ring is gorgeous!!!

I love John's work and your stone is no exception. What a beauty! :kiss2:

My middle finger is a 9.5. :) My largest stone is 11.1mm, and I opted for no halo. My recommendation would be a simple, classic setting so the stone shines. Probably white metal. And it might be really fun to explore an 8-prong setting to emphasize his cutting, such as:

Can you pls share a pic of your stone on your finger? I’m struggling with how big it will look with a halo to be honest.

Are you set on a halo?

The cut speaks for itself and it's a huge stone! Maybe just a simple setting with some diamonds on the band like me big tourmaline?

So um... I'd halo the heck out of it:lol-2::P2 its not a size thing though! But if you're concerned about size, no halo, thats a big stone already.

Would a 11.4mm be better?

Visually something that looks like this on the finger would be too much for me...

For your inspiration, my 10x10 topaz in a double sided halo ring.

@Acinom do you mind sharing what size is your finger? It looks fab on you. Not too big at all. And the double sided halo is gorgeous.

Couldn’t find a big enough cushion so here is a 13mm wide aquamarine that is approx 16mm wide with the halo. What do you think? Too big or looks fine?

Something like these:
IMAG1997.jpg

IMAG1844.jpg

Top one is my cheapo Amethyst from Jeff Davies and the bottom one is my concave cut Amethyst from Richard Homer.

I have chubby short fingers, ring finger is about size 9.5 and the middle finger is about 12.

Both stones are about 9mm X 9mm.

Enjoy your stone and ring, the stone is stunning!

Never too big. The older you get, the better it will be. The stone IS large, so just go with it! Something great, strong and elegant about a big, bold ring. My opinion is that your hand can manage this size. Easily. And, if you already have many smaller rings, it could be immensely refreshing. The color is gentle, like the aqua, so size is in order to make a statement out of the color and cut.

Re the halo. I’m torn because I do think it needs a visual frame around the stone. But in general I prefer a large stone standing on its own. So either a well done metal frame or a halo which is not competing via bling with the stone. Smaller diamonds could do this, creating a fine glitter effect. I believe Acinom’s topaz ring has this. The smaller diamonds frame the larger stone without competing.

Here's my John Dyer aquamarine. It allows the stone to be the center of attention, sort of, without the extra width of a halo. It would be nice in white gold, with or without the diamonds. I can imagine it without the fleur de lis as well. Just the floating lines.
Your stone is so beautiful any setting you choose will be gorgeous.

There are ways of having diamonds surround without adding much more circumference to the stone. The general idea is in these flowers. Because these are round and yours is square, this is a general suggestion. Clearly proportions would have to be explored to best Suit your stone. These haloes are different degrees of diagonals, which add sparkle and light to a frame without beefing up the size as much as if they were horizontal. From the top, especially in my star sapphire example, the stone is the center of attention and the diamonds are barely visible until tilted. It’s a mix between a metal frame and a halo, which serves to add interest to every angle. Just another option. Whatever you end up doing, it’s a lovely stone!

Thank you @dk168 @Bluegemz @suzanne2

I asked John to hold both cushions while I decide on which by Monday so am going to pop by a store to look for more huge gems to try tmr to help me decide.

Agree that @Acinom topaz setting is gorgeous. Seriously leaning towards a double halo like hers now but I’ll have a chat with my jeweler and see...

@Bluegemz

Omg I love this necklace... do you have more info about it?

Can’t wait to see it in better light as I got back pretty late today. Even then, it’s super gorgeous under crappy lighting

Omg the blue is so electric, and the cut is awesome. It's like a unique neon snowflake. I'm so excited to see how you set it!
