We may not always agree, but I appreciate your straightforwardness. Do tell us more about yourself. Firstly, are you a Daniel or a Danielle?

P.S. I hope you don''t hold my JD against me.

I''m curious, too! This would be a perfect place for those cat pics I was asking for! What''s the story!?

Okay I''m not a regular in these parts, but I''d like to know more about you, too!
You seem like a very interesting person...

Harriet, I''m overwhelmed by your kindness! Please see my comments in your spessarite thread. Please be assured that I couldn''t find this thread. I''m delighted that you did this! Thank you so much!

It''s Daniel, but you can call me Danny.

I won''t hold your JD against you, if you won''t hold my BA against me.

Hi Miranda! I missed that request. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera. LOL! In fact, I was commiserating with Harriet in the other thread about not being able to take pictures.

I promise to take pictures if and when I get a camera. There's a digital camera I'd really like to have.

The story is that I went to the shelter to get a kitten, and ended up getting a purebred Egyptian Mau. Just like that! I was very surprised. I saw that she had spots and stripes. You could see the spots because she had been shaved for surgery. She was only nine weeks old.

I didn't know much about cat breeds (I know a little more now) but it turns out she matched every criterion on the CFA breed standard list for Egyptian Mau's. She also has the specific personality traits that are often mentioned. Her temperament is very similar to that of a Siamese except she's not willful (I had two Siamese kittens that were and I had to find a better home for them). She basically acts like a puppy. She even fetches a ball. She'll do this for the better part of an hour until she gets tired. She'll be 2 in July.

Thanks for asking!

Of course not! I'm curious as to why you were surprised that I'm a lawyer by profession, though.

Where in Hawaii do you live? What type of jewellery do you like (very broad question, I know).

You had made a comment about "arguments," about arguments being a form of debate for you. I had said that I followed your definition. The Socratic method is used in law schools, but it's also used in undergraduate colleges (rigorous ones, anyway). I think that when we had that exchange, I kind of pictured you in my mind as an academic. Not as an academic per se, but as someone with a post-graduate degree in Humanities or Social Sciences. That was probably something of a projection, because that describes a lot of my friends.

I was pleasantly surprised when you said that you have a JD (something I consider equivalent to a PhD) because I wanted to go to law school. The BA would have been perfect for that, of course, but I didn't have the discipline to pursue it, and frankly I don't think I have the requisite social skills for practicing law.

I live on Hawaii Island. I've lived in Hawaii since 2001. I'll be more than happy to answer any questions you or anyone else might have about it. It's a beautiful place and I'm very lucky to be able to live here.

My interest in jewelry started when I was a child and my grandmother had a jewelry box full of jewels. She mainly liked diamonds and gold, but she liked everything, and she had collected jewelry for many years. My interests in jewelry are (this is a hard question) 1. precious metals, gold, its history and use by various cultures over millennia, platinum, its color and weight 2. diamonds, any color, reasonably high clarity, old cuts and modern (I am finding I like the cut and symmetry of modern RB's the best) 3. colored gems like red spinel, tsavarite, aquamarine, spessarite, yellow sapphire, tourmalines, amethyst, etc.

I was not very good at science but the one science I excelled at and enjoyed was Earth Science. I'm very interested in the natural world and also in the artisan aspect of cutting stones and creating jewelry.

Hey Indanny,
I''m glad you finally saw this thread!
Seriously, I look forward to your posts. I think you seem very informed about the subject at hand whenever you do post, and I like the fact that you are proud enough of your kitty-cat to have started a post about them
9.gif

Hawaii, huh...I live in the Midwest, and I have never been to Hawaii, but I sure would like to. I think I have seasonal affective disorder (rain and gray skies really bring me down), so Hawaii sounds pretty darn good to me!
Do tell more...after all, this is your life (I mean, thread!)...

Hi! Great getting to know you. Just wanted to tell you that my cat fetches too! It gets so annoying at times but it reminds me of the dogs I had growing up.

I''m so jealous of your location.

Hawaii!!!

I am so jealous. My pledge daugher (I was Greek in college) is from and lives back in Hawaii now. I am warning you I want to pick your brain soon when I plan my honeymoon! I am glad you saw this thread since you are such an active poster.

~Kat

Kat,

Let me say that I think I suffered from seasonal affective disorder too when I lived in upstate New York. I lived in upstate New York for twelve years. The months after the leaves fell off the trees and before it started snowing when it was cold and raining were the worst. I sympathize with you. I know what that's like!

I'm glad I finally found this thread too. I was looking for it! Who could refuse an invitation like this? Certainly not me.

Honestly, your comments about looking forward to my posts made my day. Thank you.

My cat's great. I just wish I had a camera so I could take her picture! She is the first pet I have raised since I got a puppy as a small child, so it's all kind of new to me. She's very affectionate and I'm glad I decided to get her.

I really don't claim to know much about any of this jewelry stuff, but I'm having a lot of fun learning!

As far as Hawaii, I live on Hawaii Island, as I said, and I've lived on Maui. I lived here first, and then I moved to Maui, and then I moved back here. I've lived here a total of eight years and there's good and bad things about it like everywhere else, but overall, there isn't any other place that I'd like to be. I know that probably doesn't come as a surprise but it's the truth.

Hi EM1!

Is that your diamond in your avatar? Maybe I can be jealous of that and we can be even.

Seriously though, living somewhere like Maui really isn't as glamorous as it sounds. As I said to Kat, everywhere has its good and bad. I kind of thought "wow, here I am, I'm living on Maui." I got over myself real fast.

It's interesting that your cat fetches too! One of my Siamese used to, but other than that I'd never heard of that before.

Thanks for saying hi! I look forward to getting to know you better!

Danny,

You pegged me correctly. I do have a post-graduate degree in Philosophy. I was in a PhD programme before switching to law school. Law practice does not requires social skills, from what I''ve witnessed.

Do you live anywhere near Hualalai? I''ve been there. The Big Island (that''s Hawaii island, right?) is beautiful, lucky you. As for Maui, did you drive to Hana?

Do you have any pictures of your grandmother''s collection? Do you have any plans to start cutting? Do you design? Yes, I''m a curious one.

Wow. Not to pat myself on the back or anything but that truly that was my impression. I'm glad it was accurate.

I'll have to take your word about practicing law and social skills. LOL! There's only one ABA approved law school in Hawaii, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and I have no plans to go there, or to move to Honolulu.

Yes, I've driven on the road to Hana, I don't know how many times, maybe 100 times. First the twists and turns used to kind of make me nauseous, but then I got pretty good at it (I'm a car person-- I like cars, I like driving) and then I started to enjoy it. I've been to Hamoa beach. I think it's the most beautiful place I've seen. I've eaten at the Hotel Hana Maui's restaurants (one of them). I stayed in a vacation rental in Hana for a week (I was lucky to be able to do that), and I've been to the Red Sand Beach.

The Big Island, that's another name for it, yes. You've been to Hualalai? Lucky you! That looks very nice to me. I actually don't live there. I live in the Hamakua district on the other side.

No, I don't have any pictures of my grandmother's collection. My grandmother passed away in 2001, not long after I moved here. I have some small pieces from her collection. They're very basic, my uncle got her favorite piece, her solitaire, and my aunt got her second biggest diamond. My grandmother set up a trust fund for me, but for whatever reason, she always refused to make a list for grandfather of her pieces saying who she wanted to inherit them. My mother was supposed to get her solitaire, and I was supposed to get her second biggest diamond! I think it's kind of funny because I didn't care very much. I thought it was kind of amusing that my uncle chose the best piece. He doesn't like jewelry. I don't know why he wanted it. LOL! Thanks for asking.
1.gif

Wow, I don't have any plans to start cutting or designing. I'm very flattered that you might think so, but I'm still exploring possible options. I think I'd like to take the GIA course. You can do that on the internet? Maybe someone knows and can tell me about it?

You pegged me too. I noticed that you wrote "Iamdanny." That is, of course, exactly what I meant by my screen name. Thank you again for starting this thread asking about me. I like this kind of thing (no, not talking about myself
17.gif
) but getting to know people on forums. Threads like this are a great opportunity to meet people.

Yes, that is the diamond my lovely fiance gave me for our engagement. LOL. Yup, my cat fetches...its really funny. I have a sphynx though. I am allergic to most animals but for some reason not allergic to hairless cats.

I know what you mean about the area you live. I currently live in NYC. I''ve been here for quite a few years but before that I also lived in Philladelphia too. Both places have the inital shock but you get used to it pretty quick when its your daily environment. I have to say that I just can''t get over not seeing the sun for weeks at a time and I grew up for the most part in Michigan.

I saw you are a car person...what sorts of cars do you enjoy?

My personal favorite was my Audi A6 2.8q. I had that for almost 10 years. I like the Audi 4000q, although I never owned one. I like Volkswagens. I had a '64 Beetle for 10 years. It was my first car. I like Porsche's, although I don't enjoy driving them as much as Audi's.

Audi is my favorite carmaker by far, but that's owned by Volkswagen as you might know and I like Volkswagens too. Porsche designed the original Volkswagen as you might also know, and I like the 911. I like the base model the best.

I liked the previous generation Mercedes Benz SL convertibles. I've only driven the 8 cylinder, not the 12, but it was memorable. I liked the older E Class, although it's not exciting to drive.

I like Saabs. They're a lot of fun to drive, at least the pre-GM ones were.

I like Hondas. I've liked Honda's since the 1973 Civic. I like Toyota's. I liked the first ones imported into the US and I like some of them now. The Yaris sedan is the one I like the best.

I like American cars from the late '60's to the early '70's. My mother had an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible. I don't remember the year. I think it was 1971.

I don't have any real desire to have a car that is difficult or expensive to maintain. There's not much choice of where you can take your car on a small island and I was lucky my Audi was very reliable. Eventually it needed major work, though, and that was a problem because the Volkswagen dealer had gone out of business by that time. I have a 1999 Honda Accord now and I can't say I enjoy driving it like the Audi, but I like it very much. It's very minimalist in a way I like. I want to try to get 300,000 miles out of it. I might only get 200,000- 250,000 but I'm going to try.

And yourself? Do you like cars? What cars do you like if you do?

Love reading about you Danny! Do you like travelling?

Thanks! I have to say I probably did like traveling, I've traveled all over the US, except the Pacific Northwest, and to England, and I was born in Florida and I've lived in Florida, upstate New York, New Orleans, Arizona, and now here. So these days I don't like flying back and forth between here and Florida (12 hours in the air, not including stops in LA and usually one other city) and I don't do it any more than I have to.
3.gif

While I like the idea of traveling, I also like to read about and look at pictures of different places around the world. Flying isn't my favorite thing (I've been doing it since I was two but these days it's not as fun) and I live far away from anywhere, so I'd like to go to Italy and to Asia but I don't know if I'll do it.
