Yes, that is the diamond my lovely fiance gave me for our engagement. LOL.

Congratulations on your engagement! Can I ask the size, color, and clarity of your diamond, and who made your ring? This is Pricescope, so that's not considered rude, is it? It's beautiful, in any case.

EM, I hope you don't mind... here is the SMTR thread:

Imdanny, when you want to find a particular thread, a good way to do that is to click on 'find all posts' under someone's avatar, and then click on 'all topics by this user.' That's how I found EM's thread.

Thanks! Please call me Danny.

Thanks, Musey. Hey Danny, I think Imdanny is way cooler by the way. Just kidding...we will call you Danny from now on. Thank you for the nice comments on my ring. My fiance is very proud and I cherish the ring every day.

So...should we go to Hawaii on our honeymoon? We are getting married in September and the weather is iffy in a lot of parts around the world. What do you think?

EM1,

LOL. Yes, you should come to Hawaii for your honeymoon. I don't think you'd regret it. The weather here in September isn't an issue at all. We only have inclement weather at higher elevations (i.e. it snows on the top of the highest mountain, it gets cold and wet in winter on windward sides of the islands at elevations which are just below the elevation at which it snows, etc.) and the leeward sides of the islands (e.g. where Harriet was talking about) are sunny practically every day of the year.

I totally had a converstation with myself that went something like this: Well, if we come to Hawaii we will have to meet up. Then I thought about how I would explain to my fiance that I know this guy named Imdanny...opps I mean Danny from a diamond forum right after we get married. LOL...he''d be like nnnooooooooooooooooo more diamonds for you em1!!!

I saw you are a car person...what sorts of cars do you enjoy?

My personal favorite was my Audi A6 2.8q. I had that for almost 10 years. I like the Audi 4000q, although I never owned one. I like Volkswagens. I had a ''64 Beetle for 10 years. It was my first car. I like Porsche''s, although I don''t enjoy driving them as much as Audi''s.

Audi is my favorite carmaker by far, but that''s owned by Volkswagen as you might know and I like Volkswagens too. Porsche designed the original Volkswagen as you might also know, and I like the 911. I like the base model the best.

I liked the previous generation Mercedes Benz SL convertibles. I''ve only driven the 8 cylinder, not the 12, but it was memorable. I liked the older E Class, although it''s not exciting to drive.

I like Saabs. They''re a lot of fun to drive, at least the pre-GM ones were.

I like Hondas. I''ve liked Honda''s since the 1973 Civic. I like Toyota''s. I liked the first ones imported into the US and I like some of them now. The Yaris sedan is the one I like the best.

I like American cars from the late ''60''s to the early ''70''s. My mother had an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible. I don''t remember the year. I think it was 1971.

I don''t have any real desire to have a car that is difficult or expensive to maintain. There''s not much choice of where you can take your car on a small island and I was lucky my Audi was very reliable. Eventually it needed major work, though, and that was a problem because the Volkswagen dealer had gone out of business by that time. I have a 1999 Honda Accord now and I can''t say I enjoy driving it like the Audi, but I like it very much. It''s very minimalist in a way I like. I want to try to get 300,000 miles out of it. I might only get 200,000- 250,000 but I''m going to try.

And yourself? Do you like cars? What cars do you like if you do?
1.gif
Hi again Danny,
Sorry I''m late to the party but I just saw this. My parents also had a 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme Convertible, dark green body with a white convertible top. That car totally rocked! I was a little kid, and used to sit in the back...and I SO looked forward to day trips in that car!
But alas, a mechanic told my Dad that the timing chain was about to break so Dad got rid of the car. Needless to say, he doesn''t know much about cars...he ended up trading it in on a Pontiac Firebird, but I never quite got over that Cutlass...

Wow. Not to pat myself on the back or anything but that truly that was my impression. I''m glad it was accurate.
Did you guess the Philosophy part too?

I''ll have to take your word about practicing law and social skills. LOL! There''s only one ABA approved law school in Hawaii, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and I have no plans to go there, or to move to Honolulu.

Yes, I''ve driven on the road to Hana, I don''t know how many times, maybe 100 times. First the twists and turns used to kind of make me nauseous, but then I got pretty good at it (I''m a car person-- I like cars, I like driving) and then I started to enjoy it. I''ve been to Hamoa beach. I think it''s the most beautiful place I''ve seen. I''ve eaten at the Hotel Hana Maui''s restaurants (one of them). I stayed in a vacation rental in Hana for a week (I was lucky to be able to do that), and I''ve been to the Red Sand Beach.
Is that the beach with a cave? If so, I''ve been there too. I''m afraid I''m done. Not only did I get carsick, the car stalled and there were no waterfalls. Where in Maui did you live? I stayed near Wailea.

The Big Island, that''s another name for it, yes. You''ve been to Hualalai? Lucky you! That looks very nice to me. I actually don''t live there. I live in the Hamakua district on the other side.
Thanks.

No, I don''t have any pictures of my grandmother''s collection. My grandmother passed away in 2001, not long after I moved here. I have some small pieces from her collection. They''re very basic, my uncle got her favorite piece, her solitaire, and my aunt got her second biggest diamond. My grandmother set up a trust fund for me, but for whatever reason, she always refused to make a list for grandfather of her pieces saying who she wanted to inherit them. My mother was supposed to get her solitaire, and I was supposed to get her second biggest diamond! I think it''s kind of funny because I didn''t care very much. I thought it was kind of amusing that my uncle chose the best piece. He doesn''t like jewelry. I don''t know why he wanted it. LOL! Thanks for asking.
1.gif

Aw, I''m sorry. At least you have some reminders of her.

Wow, I don''t have any plans to start cutting or designing. I''m very flattered that you might think so, but I''m still exploring possible options. I think I''d like to take the GIA course. You can do that on the internet? Maybe someone knows and can tell me about it?
Yes, you can. How science-oriented are you? If you are interested in that aspect of gemmology, the UK equivalent, the FGA, is reputedly better (and cheaper). I''m hoping to be able to spend a few months in London to take it. It''s available long-distance, but I''d like the lab experience.
You pegged me too. I noticed that you wrote ''Iamdanny.'' That is, of course, exactly what I meant by my screen name. Thank you again for starting this thread asking about me. I like this kind of thing (no, not talking about myself
17.gif
) but getting to know people on forums. Threads like this are a great opportunity to meet people.
You''re welcome. I''d like to get to know you better. Where in FL did you grow up? I''ve been in South Beach for 2 months.

Hi again Kat! Yes, that was a truly great car. It''s sad what is happening with the American car industry today. My parents still have that car but they parked it in the basement and it doesn''t run. Maybe one day they''ll sell it at the Hershey, PA car show to someone who want to restore it. At this point, that would be the best thing to do! Good memories. Thanks.

Hi Harriet,

No, I didn't guess the philosophy part.

Yes, the cave with the pool in it.

Well, the road made me sick a lot because I don't like mold and it seemed like mold was pouring out of the jungle sometimes. I used to go camping at the federal park and go to Hamoa beach. I liked that Hana is pristine. I found the people who lived there to be insular, and not the friendliest toward outsiders.

I lived in Kihei and upcountry.

Not very science oriented. More social sciences, humanities. Although I think I could do the GIA course, but I have to find out more.

Hi, Danny :-). Like so many of the other women posting in this thread, some of them like diamondseeker and Harriet in fact being close friends of mine, I have found you interesting for a long time. However, I would never have been brave enough to approach you as Harriet did and ask you if I could start a thread about you! I am, as I often am, in awe of her for for doing Pricescope the service of introducing you to us in a much broader way than would have been possible had we been limited to getting to know you through your postings to other threads! Thank you, Harriet!!

Two things struck me immediately, Danny. First, you must be older than I thought you were. Reading about your life and interests made me adjust my perspective. I think especially the cars in which you have an interest made me rethink your probable age. I had thought you were probably very young.

Second, I was struck by the travelling you did in your lifetime, I believe you said since age two. There must be some reason for that and I am interested in what it was. I can only speculate now, although of course I am doing so...a father in the military or the diplomatic service perhaps?

I feel like a kindred spirit in that I, also, liked earth science...but perhaps that is true of many of us who are attracted to gems :-). I suspect that you would make a wonderful gemology student and a great GG. I was once interested in pursuing that myself, but family matters have been very complicated for me in recent years. It has been a pleasure reading about you and I look forward to getting to know you much better.

I love the relationship you have with your cat; I love animals. My last two dogs were retrievers, so a retrieving cat is right up my alley ;-).

PS-If you would like to know more about me, please feel free to read about me here.

Hi Deb,

Yes, this is what I posted in the royal jewelry thread:

"This is a picture I found from Showtime's miniseries The Tudors.

Showtime's site interestingly enough makes this correction:

"This coronet has the 8 strawberry leaves
and 8 pearls of an earl's crown not a king's crown"

So that's the story of that. The avatar (after going without an avatar for more than a year) is kind of tongue in cheek- it's meant to be funny. I don't consider myself a movie star anymore than I consider myself a king.

Now on to more serious things.

Yes, thank you, Harriet!

Deb, most people think I'm younger than I am- I am young at heart, that translates into about 41 years old in my case.

Thanks for the link! I will definitely read it because I do want to know more about you! As the crown might indicate, I've settled on the fact that I too am an admirer of gold!! It took me a long time to make up my mind and I still like platinum (although in truth I liked the ring I saw that was polished and new looking very, very much, the one I saw with very heavy patina, not so much) but gold is what I want for my band ring (I'm getting a Lucida band from Tiffany & Co- and I have never worn any jewelry- I'm excited!).

Thank you for your kind words about my potential as a student of gemology, your kind words about my posts, and about my cat, and for telling me about your dogs! I had a Golden Retriever when I was a kid. She was very sweet and gentle.

Now I will answer your question. You are very perceptive. When I was two years old my mother remarried and my mother and stepfather and I moved from Florida to New York. Thus, I flew back and forth between New York, LaGuardia and Kennedy and Tampa, sometimes stopping in and visiting relatives in Charlotte, NC. I flew on Eastern and National most of the time. Of course they don't exist anymore. I flew by myself when they would give you the plastic wings if you were a child flying by yourself. I remember when there were no crowds and the customer service was unimaginable by today's standards.

Your post was very kind, Deb. Thank you!!! I am looking forward to getting to know you better and to reading more of your thoughtful contributions to the forums!

It took me a while to reply to your reply, Danny, because I began a fruitless search for the name of a woman who makes 22K jewelry in Hawaii. I believe her first name is Dyan and I know that I have her name and e-mail address somewhere! I just do not have the proper amount of time to do a thorough search right now. I thought that if she was in your vicinity or held a show near you that you might want to see what she makes.

41 years old seems plenty young to me, by the way! It seems like a perfect age, in fact. It doesn't sound so young as to make for callow youth, but it sounds young enough for plenty of vigor and strength. I think that, for me, it was probably my favorite age :-).

Like you, I love the crown in the icon you now have. I know why the television producers decided to give it to "Henry VIII"! He looks quite dashing in it...Earl's crown or not!

I do not know the story of the gold Lucida band you are getting. In what thread is that described? Since I am a gold aficionado, I really do want to read about it!

Although my last dog was a yellow Lab of enormous proportions whom we adopted at age two, our previous dog was a Golden Retriever like the dog with whom you grew up. We had her "since birth"-i.e. since she was old enough to leave her mother (6 weeks). She was as good as my Lab was bad. She was sweet and gentle and, since we had her since she was a puppy, we had a different view of her. Or maybe not. (I am very maternal and I certainly felt that the Lab was my baby, too.) At any rate, I love Goldens. Our dog growing up was a spaniel, though. My little brother and I used to fight over who got to sleep with her ;-).

Finally: you were very brave to fly back and forth between Florida and New York. Were you given any choice in the matter? Were you scared? I think that for some children making that trip would be a very frightening experience. I hope that it was not that way for you. I feel protective of the little boy who was forced to shuttle back and forth at such a young age...and adjust to different households as well! You must have had to get strong early in life. My heart goes out to you.

Hugs,
Deb

Danny, I do not know if this woman's work will be of any interest to you, but I did manage to dig up who she was. I had been misspelling her name, which made my search more difficult ;-). Her name is her website. I used to receive an e-mail with a list of where she was giving her shows. If you would like to receive one, just contact her.

Too late! Even my black hair has turned reddish!

Do you wear your jewels on the beach?
28.gif

No. Do you?

Btw, I think I have been to Kihei. It's the last place to stop for food and drink before heading to Hana, right? Have you ever gone snorkelling in that sunken crater (Molokai?)?

I wish I could go to the beach! I don't live next to any swimable beach. What there is to drive to is hardly worth it. The beach where you are and the beaches on Maui are much nicer than the Big Island. Big waves, rocks, currents, that kind of thing.

Ok, look, here's a map. Kihei is the town next to Wailea. The last stop before Hana is Paia however you can go around the island the other way (not recommended unless you have 4WD).

I have not been snorkeling there (have you?). I have snorkeled off of Lahaina. I have to say the environment there has sustained a lot of damage in the past 25 years. I went with someone who lived there and had been snorkeling there for that long. It almost made him cry when he was telling us about the damage that had been done over the years. I can however say that snorkeling is great! I think. It's like flying through the water. I enjoyed it a lot.

mauddi_map.jpg

Oops. Let me try again. Is Kihei a charming town with the Peggy Sue diner and a great Vietnamese restaurant? I tried snorkelling off Key West, but freaked out. I could see Molokini from my hotel room, which was cool. Btw, what is that awesome local brand of ice cream?

I spent a lot of my growing up 75 miles away from New York, we had two commuter trains that went as far north as we were. One of my friends from college moved there and I tried it for a few weeks. He had just moved there so he had an apartment (a huge apartment, Mrs. Astor's former ball room on Av A) divided into six units, with parties complete with live bands playing in the "ballroom". The noise and the whole experience was a little overwhelming so I got a room at a nice hotel and then got on a plane. I guess the city is not for me but it must be a very exciting place to live all things considered.

We had her ''since birth''-i.e. since she was old enough to leave her mother (6 weeks).

Hugs,

Deb

Hi Deb,

First, please don''t worry at all about being late in replying. I literally couldn''t find this thread for about a month so I''m cool with that. Likewise, please don''t ever be offended if it takes me time to reply in this thread. It isn''t personal to anyone. I''m in the middle of some projects with my car, organizing paperwork for my car, getting some work done on my car, and helping my parents buy a new car (not helping them with money, I mean teaching them how to do it at their request because they''ve never bought a car new) and so on.

Thank you for your kind words about my childhood. It was difficult to be separated from my grandmother. And her passing was very difficult for me too. I won''t like about that. But I liked flying. Um, I did like it until I became an adult and realized more what a risk (although slight) it is, and then lately I think I''ve done so much of it in my life, and it''s become such a hassle with security, which in the late ''60''s and in the ''70''s, it wasn''t anything like that, I''ve come to the point where I''d rather not do it. Last time I did it, we had to sit in the heat, roped off from everyone else, for two hours, subject to random security checks, before we even got on the plane.

I haven''t had a spaniel but I''d like to, but the truth is I can''t have a dog- it would be too much responsibility. My cat (and I''m kind of jealous of people who do have dogs) is about what I can handle. And I can only handle one pet. That''s probably best because my cat wouldn''t like to have another animal in the house. She''s kind of spoiled.

So the Lucida- long story short, I looked at band rings, including non-cast rings like e-weddingband rings, and I decided (I know a lot of people at this forum wouldn''t agree with me, but such is life) the Lucida gold band is the one that I want. And I looked at every ring I could find, everywhere. This one is "it" for me. Yum. I''m hoping to have it in early September and I''m hoping to be able to post pictures (I don''t own a camera

Thanks for the link! Beautiful stuff! Sure beats chains that they sell these days that are, for instance, 14kt, but coated with higher alloy to look better under jewelry store lights (but that obviously is going to wear off- yuck). I still like platinum but I spend a long time thinking about this and I like gold a lot too. My avatar is kind of symbol of that. Gold has been popular for millennia. I think that people who say that it is out of fashion are being short sighted.

Hugs,

Danny

Danny I am curious about how you found PS and how you ended up researching and learning about diamonds? I know you are interested in having a ring for yourself one day, but you don''t seem to fall in the usual camp of men seeking e-rings or women oogling bling

Unless I missed something...

Nice to meet you BTW!

Nice to meet you!

No, I don''t think you missed anything. I''m just a regular guy/ gemology type nerd. There aren''t many guys here, so I hope I can help provide a different perspective along with the small group of us that post here on a regular basis.

Thanks for saying hello!

Harriet,

Please see my questions above about the food in Singapore and about what you think about living in New York.

But I have another question to add:

I am not being snarky. You seem to me to be a very unique person and what I notice most about your posts is that you seem to be unflappable. You always seem to be calm. Others around you might be losing their heads, but you remain calm. I think this ability to be calm (along with many other positive attributes about your personality obviously) draws people to you. Is this your personality off-line, and do you have any advice about how a person can be like that?

I hope this isn't too personal but it's something I've been wanting to ask you.

Hi Danny,

Thanks for the compliments. No, your question isn''t too personal. Unfortunately, I do ''flap'' when I''m alone or with family and friends. Sorry to disappoint you. But, when I deal with the external world, I think before I speak or write (in which case I also proofread). As one of my friends puts it: "Engage brain before opening mouth." Hope this helps to some extent.
