Oops. Let me try again. Is Kihei a charming town with the Peggy Sue diner and a great Vietnamese restaurant?

Yes! and Yes!

Maybe this is the ice cream you are thinking of?

Please tell me more about the food in Singapore and please tell me about New York- do you like living there? I spent a lot of my growing up 75 miles away from New York, we had two commuter trains that went as far north as we were. One of my friends from college moved there and I tried it for a few weeks. He had just moved there so he had an apartment (a huge apartment, Mrs. Astor''s former ball room on Av A) divided into six units, with parties complete with live bands playing in the ''ballroom''. The noise and the whole experience was a little overwhelming so I got a room at a nice hotel and then got on a plane. I guess the city is not for me but it must be a very exciting place to live all things considered.

Do you like the milkshakes at Peggy Sue? I only had one.
14.gif

No. It''s another brand that''s more common. I think Peggy Sue''s uses it.

Singaporean cuisine is awesome (and I''m not given to superlatives). It''s a wonderful blend of our various cultures -- Chinese, Indian and Malay. Some Singaporeans eat four meals a day, the fourth being just before bedtime! This site can explain Singapore food better than I can: www.makansutra.com Are you a food person?

Was your friend''s apartment architecturally interesting? I love living in New York, except for the winter. I felt right at home from the beginning. I like that one can walk to many areas easily (including the Diamond District

). The food and shopping are not too shabby either. One of my happy places is the gem and mineral hall at the Natural History Museum. Now, that hall is really shabby, but it''s calm despite the screaming kids.

Do you have your Lucida band yet? My original engagement ring is a Lucida. What is on your jewellery wishlist?

I''m not up-to-date on "the Tudors" but I am intrigued by that family.

Hi Harriet,

You don''t disappoint me at all. It''s just that I''m somewhat in awe of your ability to control your persona on the internet. I''ve been around posting boards for a long, long time, and I''ve seen a lot. Unfortunately, thinking before I speak, and editing my comments before posting is something I''ve been learning to do since I started. The good news is that I''ve become a lot better at it recently. Your comments about the public are well taken. I want what I post to be "on the record." As such, I care that I get it right, you know, so thanks for your comments. Much appreciated. Now I will answer your second post!

Ok, now I know. You're thinking about Roselani, the ice cream made on Maui (sounds like "rosealani").

http://www.roselani.com/

I haven't had it, actually.

I'd like to try it! I can't right now because I've been on a diet 1 week tomorrow. I've very excited because I get to weigh myself tomorrow (once a week) and I'm pretty sure the number is going to be good.

I have been to Peggy Sues, I had hamburgers. I didn't try the milkshakes. I should have!

That link is awesome! Wow, Singaporean cuisine sounds great! And eating four times a day! I would like that.

I'm not a food person in the sense of I can't cook and the only world class restaurants I've been to were in New Orleans- nothing second rate about restaurants there, but it was a long time ago. I eat mostly (almost all) organic, locally grown food in Hawaii. We have a large Asian population (I think our Caucasian population is 20%) so we have a lot of spices and sauces, things like that. That's what I'm eating on my diet. I've cut out desert, sugar, and fast food. I have to say I'm very lucky that I can eat like this but I don't think it makes me a food person. I'm a car person, an audiophile person, a jewelry person, but I know what it means to be good at something, and I know there are people who understand food much better than me.

My friend's apartment was architecturally interesting. I never verified the claims that it had been Mrs. Astor's ballroom, but I don't doubt that it could have been. It was on Avenue A. It was as big as as a 19th century ballroom, it was massive. The "apartments" were actually rooms on two floors with their doors facing into this massive space having been "pre-fabricated" along opposite walls with staircases to get to the second floor rooms which had small balconies. It looked like an indoor stadium with Alice in Wonderland type doors in the far walls. It had a little kitchen and bathroom next to where you first walked in. There were six rooms for rent. His was one of the smallest, was on the second "floor" and had a window overlooking the street.

I like the Natural History Museum. I've been there many times.

"The Tudors" is a good show. I'm enjoying it. One of the things that's interesting is that you can use Wikipedia or Showtime's own "The Tudors" wiki to look up the actual historical characters and events. The drama is interesting but the drama involved in the actual history is even more interesting. And it's interesting to see how the two compare. And the jewelry isn't hard on the eyes.

I am getting my Lucida band soon. I'm saving for it the old fashioned way, with cash, and I'm making progress all the time.

Thanks for asking.

Then it's going to be something with diamonds. Brian Gavin's new business seems to be putting out some quality stuff. I'm definitely keeping an open mind.

Danny,
I have to go, but wanted to say that what I like about you is your forthrightness! You don''t suffer fools.

Harriet,
It wasn't always this way. It's a talent I developed later in life. Since I came about it the hard way, I'm appreciating it. Thank you! Your compliment is a pleasure to hear.

You''re welcome!

Three more days until what?

Good.

Three more days until I leave South Beach, which have elapsed.

So you're in New York? I haven't been to New York in so long.

I've been meaning to ask you, what do you think of Tiffany & Co? You said your original engagement ring is a Lucida. I know a lot of people criticize Tiffany & Co, and I know the reasons why, but I like some things they've done (the Tiffany setting, their history with tanzanite and tsavorite) and I think they're kind of a bargain, not for RB's, that's for sure, but for rings. Eg. their price for a 3mm Lucida is $1025 in platinum and Cartier's 2.5mm platinum band is $2000.

I'd say my opinion of them overall is mixed. I'd like to know your opinion of them.

Are you working on any jewelry projects now? Have you recently completed any (you have a spessarite ring I haven't seen I think)? Would you please post pictures for me in this thread? I haven't been able to read all of the forums recently so I'm not certain of what you've done/ what you're doing.

It sounds like you had a good time in South Beach. I'm glad to hear it!

Danny,

If you'll pardon my bad table manners I'm going to lean across you and speak to Harriet, who is seated on your other hand at the the dinner table ;-). If I don't nab her here, I won't know when to speak to her!

I just wanted to let you know, Harriet, given all this talk of your return to New York, that my husband is currently on an assignment in New York. He spends weeks in New York and returns to Washington, DC/Virginia for weekends. If he is there long enough for you to recover from your sojourn in South Beach, maybe you and your husband would like to meet him for drinks. (Although, since he is working, his nights may not be his own.)

Thanks for allowing me to interrupt, Danny ;-).

Deb,
We''d love to. In fact, my husband has been asking to meet yours for some time!
P.S. When will I get to meet you? And Danny?

Oh, please come over.

I''d rather not pay retail markups in general, but that''s not a Tiffany-specific criticism. What I don''t care for is their diluting their brand with the silver trinkets. Their customer service is not especially good either. That said, if there''s an item unique to them, I''ll pay for it. For instance, I was just in there looking at their Lucida pendants and earrings.

I''m currently trying to identify a belated wedding present. Any suggestions? The spessartite ring is my latest. I don''t know if you''ve seen them, but I also bought a tsavorite and a Mahenge spinel fairly recently. I''d be happy to post pictures of my ring here. I hope you''re fine and just busy.

Thanks. I really needed the warmth.

I have been so busy and not unwell at all. Thank you for asking. I lurve you for inviting me over! That's so sweet of you! I can't come but if I visit my mother in upstate NY I certainly will.

I agree with you that Tiffany has diluted their brand image, nor do I wish to rely on their customer service.

I consider the Lucida to be my favorite Tiffany diamond. The metalwork of the Lucida band matches the metalwork of the Lucida setting, so I have an affinity for it.

I wish I had a suggestion for you, but I don't. Good luck with that.

I've seen the colored stones but I can't find the ring. Yes, please post pictures of it!

I will, Danny.

Where''s Danny?

Hello!

Glad to see you back in action.

Thanks.

Hello Imdanny, I was reading you live in Hawaii; my husband and I love the islands of Hawaii. I loved the water falls on the Big Island; I hiked down Pololu lookout and found it so beautiful. I also loved Waipio Valley. Where do you like to do for fun there? I enjoyed reading your WW and that is great you live out in Hawaii

Hi, Skippy! Thanks!
35.gif

I think the thing I like to do most is go to the beach. We don't have many good beaches on this island, so that's always nice. If I'm being frank about it, I kind of have to pinch myself that I'm able to live here. Certainly I can't complain.
1.gif

I'll think about you the next time I go to Waipio Valley!

Harriet, do you have any VC&A pieces? Do you have any pictures you can share with us? I think I remember that you do have something from there and I'd like to see it. Ditto for Cartier.

Just one of each -- an Alhambra pendant and a rolling ring. I''ll take a shot for you.

Harriet, I'd like that. I think those are iconic pieces and it would be great to see a snapshot of them.

While I'm on the subject, I'm planning to get a Lucida band, as I said. Well, I want your advice please.

Long story short, I have the chance to get a Cartier band instead. Since I'm talking gold the price is approximately the same (only a little more) and the price is affordable. I've been reading a lot about Cartier (as well as looking at their website) and, well, I think I like the Cartier ring better. My instincts are telling me that it's finer/ higher quality. This band is "forever." I will not "upgrade" it.

What say you? Do you think I'm being reasonable? I feel kind of badly about it because I have thought I would get the Lucida band for a long time. Sometimes I considered getting a generic ring instead and I used to think I wanted platinum instead of gold (not counting the time during which I thought about white gold). Now after looking at the quality of some of Tiffany's jewelry and reading negative stories about their customer service, I'm feeling like bypassing them for this (even though I think the Lucida band quality and price are fine and even though I will not need Tiffany's help to maintain a gold ring). I guess it gets down to the fact that I think the Cartier rings are more "classic" and the Lucida more "modern" and "if I had to choose" (which I do) I think I'd rather have a ring from Cartier. Am I a brand snob? Am I horrible?
39.gif

Patiently waiting to see your beautiful pieces and looking forward to your advice, Danny

First of all, which two bands are you choosing between? You''re not a brand snob. You''re comparing the contemporary to the classic. Personally, I''m done with Tiffany, with the exception of unique items, like the Lucida collection (but, that applies to the different brands, since I hate paying name premiums). Also, Tiffany doesn''t excite me the way Cartier does. I think there has been too much brand dilution. Uh oh, I hope I don''t get framed.

I'm considering the plain gold band on the bridal site, described as 25/10 (or 2.5 mm, a size that is more popular for men in Europe but given my 5' 7' self would be perfect for me). The only choice is between the gold and the platinum version of the same band. Cartier has a great history as a goldsmith and in platinum, so that's a toss-up, it makes very little difference to me. The gold is a lot less than the platinum, so I'll probably get that one. The platinum version looks so nice, but an extra $1,200 is a lot.

Lucida 3 mm gold $575, platinum $1,025
Tiffany Bizet, 2.5 mm gold $600, platinum $1,200
Cartier 25/10 gold $800, platinum $2,000

Bottom line, I've been looking at Cartier's history, historic pieces, and current products, and I am more impressed with Cartier than with Tiffany & Co. (if your comments are going to be held against you, I'll go down with you, it will be my privilege).

Now can I please have a snapshot of your pieces? You know Cartier and VC&A are owned by the same company, Richemont? They also own JLC, so I've owned one of their products. I still like JLC- no disappoint there- as well as Cartier and VC&A. Thanks!

Have you ever seen a single band version of Cartier''s signature rolling ring? It has three layers -- white gold, rose gold, and yellow gold.
31.gif
To me, where it comes to plain bands, it''s six of one, half a dozen of the other. I understand your reasons for wanting a Cartier piece, though.

I know VCA (the big sister) and Cartier are under the Richemont umbrella, but didn''t know about Jaeger Lecoultre. I''ve been told that VCA and Cartier are buying their own estate pieces.

I''ll take some pics in the sunlight, I promise.
