I need opinions. Did I overpay?

Hi Everyone,

We have already purchased my engagement ring, but I wanted to get some opinions from others as to whether we overpaid for the diamond. The diamond is from James Allen True Hearts Collection and the price was 4600 for a 0.7 CT with great specs and it is AGS Certificated. I have been wearing it for 3 months now and the diamond is perfect and it flashes every hour of the day. However, when I took it to the jewelry nearby for his opinion, he thinks the diamond is beautiful, but I overpaid for a 0.7 Ct. While I love my ring so much! It kind of frustrated me to think I overpaid for something thinking I was getting a fair price. He kept bringing up that is the reason why you shouldn’t by online so I don’t know if it was like a personal thing. I feel happy with a 0.7 since I have size 5 hand, but wanted a close to perfect diamond.

I just want to get opinions from you all and see what you think! Below is the link for the diamond.

So your local jeweler, who would like to sell you his own wares, was disparaging another seller by casting doubt on the quality or pricing of their products?

How unusual!

You have paid a premium for a higher quality of cut. If he is so confident of his wares, tell him to turn off his specially-designed lighting so you can compare your stone with his stones in natural light - I would place money on his stones looking worse and having poor performance. Perhaps he could supply you with GIA or AGS grading report numbers and his pricing for them, so you can compare for your own amusement what he's attempting to flog you?

You can take a simple test yourself - just place his and your stones under the table (tell him you will be doing this beforehand) and then see how they perform. I am quite certain yours will look bright from edge to edge, whereas his will likely look a lot smaller and sparkle a lot less. Check this video out for an example:

EDIT:
I think the attachment in this post is also relevant, but I can't see it today :(:

The rest of the thread is worth a read, though!

Ignore him, he's acting like a car salesman. Your diamond will outperform anything he has. This is why I don't step foot in jewelry stores.

Curious as to why you went in there to get his opinion, though? Do you know him personally?

Ignore the jeweler.

If you love it , be happy with it!
I will never understand the need to be rude once someone has already paid for it and wore it for a while.

FWIW I think it looks like a beautiful stone!

Could you have gotten a .70 ideal cut for less, yes. Does it matter at this point... NO!
It is a nice diamond so you should enjoy it! Ignore the people who would be rude!

That used to happen to me when I used to tell couple jewelers the price I am considering paying for a PS cut parameters stone as the jeweler looks at the diamond price chart and looks at his Gia excellent cut that doesn't fall into PS cut parameters let alone HCA score 2. No need to sweat, you got a stone that they would have trouble getting in

Find a new jeweler. He is biased as he wants to sell his own stones, and making you feel bad in the process. You don't need negativity like that in your life, period.

Below is a chart showing average prices of stones in the 0.70 to 0.89 carat range. With a little math we can deduce the following:
  • $6,062 average price per carat x 0.707 carats (weight per AGS cert) = $4,285
So roughly $4,300 is what current data trends is showing for a data base of stones sold in that size, color & clarity range.

It's my opinion your stone is ABOVE AVERAGE because of the AGS000 certification, excellent proportions (hence the reason it made AGS Ideal cut) and fact it's part of the JA true hearts collection.

Here is a current comparable that is of similar quality to your stone. Granted, it's a smidge more carat weight, it has lesser clarity at VVS1. Between this and the data chart, I think you paid right about the average price for a stone of that caliber.

WF ACA, 0.728ct E VVS1 - $4,614

Thanks for that chart Sledge. I never knew we had that chart available to us :D

You all the best!! I feel much more confident about my decision. I love my ring so much and I wouldn't change it for the world! The reason why I asked for his opinion is because i was browsing for wedding bands to purchase and he was already there so why not. But after his blunt comment and looking trough his expensive/low quality inventory i decided to not come back, but also left somewhat doubtful. I'm one bit doubtful anymore!

Thank you so much to everyone for your great help!

So I'm still waiting for my engagement ring but once I have it my plan is to go into stores ONLY to try on wedding bands and figure out exactly what style and size I want. Then I'll be coming here and asking the experts to help me get the best bang for my buck. I'm almost positive I won't be buying something from a B&M store. Use them to see things in person, but don't buy.

HI:

Glad you are able to write off his comments for what they are--sour grapes. Enjoy your ring!

cheers--Sharon

I agree with you! I am definitely making my wedding band purchase online. Even more now after seen how expensive they are at the local stores!!

You paid a premium for a HnA cut. Its absolutely gorgeous! Ignore the jeweler who would like to sell you a cheaper, poorly cut diamond.

Your perfect ring is beautiful on you! Enjoy it in good health!

Thanks for sharing the bling. It looks amazing!

Thank you so much everyone! I appreciate your wonderful comments, great help and advice! Hugs!:razz:
