I/J RB in diamond settings?

Maybe there is already a thread on this topic, but I couldn't find anything in a search.

I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about I or J H&A RB center stones in diamond settings. I notice that all the diamond settings (channel set or pave) I've looked at online have F/G color rated stones in them. Would there be an obvious color difference between the stones in the setting versus the center stone if it was set with an I or J H&A RB? I have told my bf that I am OK with him dropping down to a J color stone to get a larger one. However, if he chooses a diamond setting (which he is more fond of), I'm unsure if an I or J center stone will look horrible next to little F/G stones. If you do believe it would look horrible, what is the lowest color stone you would recommend for diamond settings?

If anyone has pics that would be a tremendous help! Thanks in advance!

Hi Tannet,
I'm also a lover of I-J-K color stones.
IN terms of the setting: are you looking at a "halo" type setting, where the smaller diamonds are directly next to the center- or something where the smaller diamonds on on the sides of the ring.

In the first case it's more possible that you would be able to see the difference in color- but it may not bother you all that much- if at all.
Also what color gold are you thinking of?

My first e-ring (1 carat) was an I color with F/G color diamonds in the setting. There was a difference in color but it wasn't huge and didn't bother me, but my stone wasn't very big either. :)

However, for my upgrade, (since it's going to be a larger stone and the color will be more noticeable, to me at least) *if* I end up with a J, K or L (I'm so not color sensitive- give me a big honker with a spectacular cut and I'm in love) I'm going to ask for similar color diamonds in the setting since I'm going with a custom made Harry Winston-ish halo setting and I don't want there to be a big contrast.

Check out this thread-- about half way down jellybean posted a J color solitaire next to an eternity band with F/G stones.

I suggest going to a jewelry store to look at settings with F/G color stones next to I/J color diamonds, that'd probably help. :)

there are two issues to consider - the actual difference in body colour and the apparent difference in colour that is actually a function of performance 'type' (that is very different btwn large and tiny stones)

If it's the body colour that offends your sensibilities - can remedy by choosing stone colour/gold colour as David says/stone size (bigger stones will show more colour)

If it's the difference in performance that you don't like - the small stones look like flat little white dots - well, the only fix for that is to eschew melee altogether

Ditto - best to go to a store and look in person!

Thanks for the responses. I am hoping for a something around 1 ct. I actually prefer the simple Tiffany style solitaire, but my bf thinks it's too plain and would prefer to get something like BGD's Classic Truth Sleek Micro Pave. We are not considering halo settings. The plan is to go with platinum though. Would that make the yellow tint in a J more apparent?

Thanks LALove for pointing me to Jellybean's pic. I may not be very sensitive to color because I can barely notice a difference between her solitaire and eternity band. I guess that's why I'm OK with going down to a J.

To address Rockdiamond's question: I not concerned with the difference in performance between the center stone and the melee. I am concerned with the difference in body color between the center stone and melee.

Sounds like I will probably have to take the advice of looking at them in person to make a definite decision.
