While reading a recent thread on insuring a ring, a lot of the advice seems to be related to finding comparable stones so you know how much to insure for since you'd want enough to buy a similar quality replacement.
But what if it's a jewelry item that is antique or otherwise unique and difficult to find comparisons for since the value in the piece is more related to the age or the bench time or the artistry? Do you go with an appraiser and just insure it at that value since buying a replacement is unlikely to be an easy task? Do you try to find out how much it would cost to remake from scratch?
I'm buying a bracelet preloved from another PSer and don't really know what value to insure it for since it's an unusual design and modified from when she bought it so it's probably unclear to both of us how much this bracelet now "costs" at retail. Do I just insure it based on how much I bought it for? I don't know that I could "replace" it at that cost, but I guess I could put that money towards a different piece of jewelry and call it even.
