How much would you really spend on a re-set?

Jerichosmom, your ring is so stunning the way it is! I understand that we can get tired of things; it happens to me all the time. Then I change rings for awhile. When I put the first one back on, I am in love with it again. I know it isn't rocket science but it works for me. Would you consider getting an alternate ring and keeping this one? If your heart is set on changing it, I vote for the tapered french cuts.

Go for it. You've invested enough in this piece already that it should be perfect for you.

One possible exception - if you're not in love with the diamond itself and you think you'll ultimately go with another stone someday.

Your diamond is beautiful and I adore the setting it is in!

I can't quite image what you are thinking of that would cost $7-9k. The most elaborate Singlestone setting I know of was in the $5-6k range. And Victor's Emilya settings are somewhere in the $4-5k range.

But no, I would not personally consider $7-9k worth it unless it was something like a three stone ring and we were talking about .75 ct each diamond side stones or something.

DS- the prices you are quoting are for 2ct or under (plus or minus a little), but really once you jump to around 3cts and over the prices typically start at 5.5-6k at the low end. And that is for colored gemstones or diamonds.

Thanks, SB. You are right that the stones I am aware of were in the 2-3 ct range.

Wow, thank you everyone for your responses.

I've already spoken to Ari about my options and a re-cut is not really in the cards. My stone is rather spready for it's size (9.9 x 10.2 mm) and a re-cut would make it lose diameter, weight and value. I just prefer a slightly different "look", that's all. Even he said that the least expensive option for me is to splurge on a really nice setting. My husband doesn't want me to sell it even though it wasn't an e-ring so I'm kinda stuck with it for now. He has offered to buy me something else but I'd prefer not have another ring (hence this thread). I'd rather work with what I've got.

Yenny, your oval is one of my favorites and definitely an inspiration piece for what I'm imagining. Of course, your oval adds to the scrumptiousness of the design which I would never be able to replicate with an off-round stone. But the ornateness and extra melee is what I'm really after. Yes, it's for the 3.55 OEC but I got it in 2008 but never bother posting it until last year.

Given the number of 3+ carats plus halos I see here on PS, I don't think that ring will be all that gaudy, especially since it's an antique stone and the period designs were very elaborate to begin with. I see many 3 ct+ in LA anyway so I won't really be sticking out at morning drop-off at school. Not to say that it's a normal size around here, it's just not that unusual.

Here are some inspirational settings (Yenny's included but in an off-round OEC like mine) And a pic of my ring in a temporary yellow, twisty-twine bezel which seems to bring out the facets. The 23rd street one has 2 rows of melee and was quoted around $9k almost a year ago. I can't see to attach a pic so here's the link to 23rd street.....http://www.23rdstreetjewelers.com/aCatItem.aspx

Okay, I have a totally different response after reading this. You are not in love with your stone. There is no way on earth I would spend a penny on a new setting for a stone I didn't really LOVE!!!! Don't do it because you will regret it later. You need to have a heart to heart talk with your husband and tell him you want to sell this one and start over. A new setting may be great, but it is not going to change your feelings about the diamond. If there is a dream setting that you want to spend $8k on, you need a forever, dream diamond to set in it.

I totally agree!

If you don't feel head over heels love for your stone, I wouldn't reset either, until you find the ONE. I went thru a couple different incarnations w/avc's before finding the ones I loved best, so wasted a lot of money on settings, and shipping back and forth, plus the angst of setting ideas/changes etc.

Oh, and no, I don't know that even if I had lots of money I could bring myself to spend that much on a setting. I spent that plus a bit more on my total wedding set from GOG/SS and there were times I wanted to throw up..but that's just me!

When the OP said she "preferred a slightly different look" I thought she was talking about the setting, that changing the setting would give her a slightly different look for her ring. I didn't pick up that she preferred a slightly different look in the actual stone. If that's true, then I agree that the money would be better put towards a stone that she's truly in love with. But OP, if your husband doesn't want you to sell it, then it's difficult! Maybe let some time pass, and he will come round to the idea?

She apparently had considered recutting which was kind of an indicator to me that she isn't 100% satisfied with the stone. Spending more money to change the setting isn't going to fix that, although she might like the setting better.

Call me nuts but I considered buying armywife's huge oec.... just so I could have 2 large stones...one for each of my kids to inherit one day. And in the mean time I would make a pair if earrings out of them to wear every day until I finally keel over!

Army, if you're reading this....let me know if your sale doesnt go through....:)!
Giiiiiiirl! That would be one heck of a pair of earrings! Unfortunately the sale has been finalized, sigh. I would have loved for it to go to a PSer!

As far as your setting predicament. I know it won't change the fact that you don't love it, but I absolutely adore your setting. Since you do not love it though, you should change it. Buuuuuuut what concerns me even more than the prices of the setting, is that I am picking up in this thread that you don't love the stone. I would be hesitant to spend ANY money resetting a diamond that you don't love. Is there anyway that your husband would ever consider letting you sell and getting a diamond/ring that you love? It seems pretty harsh to make you keep a piece of jewelry-especially an expensive one-that you don't love.
