How much more for an E? Go ahead, guess.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2680220.htm

I know the price jumps get surprisingly large in the higher color and clarities.
If the only difference was one color grade how much more would this diamond cost if it was E instead of F?

$200?
$500?
$1,000?
$1,500?
$2,000?
$2,500?
$3,000?
$3,500?
$4,000?

I'd love to get input from pros since you would not be affecting a sale or commenting on the quality of a competitor's goods.
The reason I'm asking is a few years back I bought an identical 0.82 AGS VVS1 ACA but it is E instead of F.
I'm just curious what today's retail price would be. (Yes, I know, I know, I can't sell it for that.)

I am going to guess 2K. I say that because prior to all this skyrocketing it was about 1K for that jump.

Kenny I cant even begin to guess accurately, but I'd say between $1 and $2k.

You know, just as an aside, if you want to sell I suggest contacting Wink Jones. I think you could be really surprised at what you would be offered for your diamond. I know I was 8) There are benefits to buying super-ideals like you own, they have better market value in some niche markets it seems.

Maybe call WF and ask what they would charge! They have internal price sheets don't they?

$1800

My guess is based on knowing it's $2000 more for a 1 ct E

Apples to apples, an E in that shape/size/clarity would be about 10.5% more than an F right now. Differences in make and availability of that category of goods in the market can influence actual prices though.

Thanks all for the input.

In October of 2006 I bought the 0.82 ct E VVS1 ACA (also graded by AGS) for $5512, see below.
If list is $10,000 today (apparently a pretty reasonable guess) then the retail price has gone up $4488.
That's 81.4% in under five years.

This is about as apples to apples as a comparison can be, same vendor, same lab, same brand, cut brand, weight and clarity, only one color grade difference.
Also my ACA was NOT that "New Line" painted ACA that WF temporarily sold, so even the cut of the cut is the same.

This blows my mind!
People have been talking about recent price increases but I had no idea it was anything near 81%. :-o :-o :-o
My heart goes out to new couples shopping now.

Does anyone else here have hard data documenting price increases?
Is it 81% because it is E VVS1, or have all colors and clarities gone up that much?

Here's the original screen capture from Oct 2006:

For my mom to buy a similar stone to my 1.22 ct OEC recently, she paid more than double what I paid in 2007. Mine's an EGL-USA N SI1; hers has no cert, JbEG called it M/N but it's definitely got more color than mine so call it O/P, VS2ish. Mine was $2500 with setting included in 2007, hers was $5500 with setting included now. And I'd shopped around- that was the best deal out there right now for what she wanted.

So, similar price increase. A LOT.

I just looked at the ACA, and actually it DOES look 81.4% more beautiful than it did five years ago.

That's real nice, because I look 81.4% less beautiful now. ;( ;(

In May 2010 I bought the diamond described in the first attached picture.

Today, an exact comparable is attached in the second picture, which, if adjusted for the greater carat weight of my stone (it is the same price per carat range) means my diamond should retail for $16,367.

That is an increase of 49% in 16 months. There is your hard proof Kenny.

WOAH!
49% in 16 months pwns my 81.4% in 5 years by a landslide!

YOU DA MAN!
Or are you DA WOMAN?
I forget whether you are an innie or an outie. Sorry.
Not that it matters, it's just a language thing.
At least we don't converse in Spanish, which assigns gender to things like tables . . . La Mesa means all tables are female. Figure THAT out!

If anyone else wants to post screen captures, here's how.
Enter the lab report number of the diamond you bought into the vendor's search field.
If your diamond comes up, then look for a comparable diamond for sale today at the same vendor.
Post both.

To calculate change in price, subtract the lower price from the larger one.
That gives you the difference.
Divide the difference by the old price.
Multiply by 100. (Part over whole times 100 is how I remember it)

That give you the difference in price in percentage.

I'm sorry that we have to keep bringing this up, but the price hikes haven't been as bad for those of us that are purchasing in foreign currencies due to the devaluation of the American dollar. I'm not sure if you're interested in these numbers, Kenny, but I bought my diamond about 18 months ago at 80 Australian cents in the dollar. I think my diamond is now about 40% more expensive (nothing comparable in BGD inventory), but our currency is now at parity (actually a bit over) so I wouldn't be stung the entire 40% difference.

From what I have seen much of the price increases happened this year. I was considering this BG Blue in February: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=BLAGS-104049675006

1.728 J VS1 VSB listed for $10,545 and was sold before the price hikes starting in March.

Similar stones now list for at least 40% more in less than 6 months.

1.734 J VS1 SB lists for $14,997
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=BLAGS-104052029014

1.706 J VS1 VSB lists for $14,910

Same same,

I was also considering buying last year but then cancelled, but I really regret I didn't take the plunge back then  . At that time these were the diamonds I was looking at and their respective prices.

WF ACA 6.48x6.50x3.99 AGS-1040377810035 1.03 G VS 2 USD7,550

WF ACA 6.46x6.48x3.99 AGS-1040389740035 1.018 G VS 2 USD7,465 (Costs abt 11,100 today)

WF ACA 6.00x6.05x3.72 AGS-1040369420050 0.821 D VS 1 USD4,903 (What I was ideally looking for nowadays but very hard to find at the moment in this size)

WF ACA 6.57x6.63x4.05 AGS-1040372120011 1.08 G VS1 USD8,900 (forgot when I looked up this one but same stone is still available for sale now also USD11,100)

Anyway I did manage to save a bit during that time n so I recently ended up buying an E color VS1 1.07 at 12,600 from BGD, quite a premium considering I was all set on going with the D .821 (I really liked that one ;( ) but I think she would've wanted an upgrade sooner rather than later...

I just recently had my wedding set and other diamond jewelry reappraised. I was in  at the increase in replacement costs. We could not afford to purchase my engagement ring at these prices today. As an FYI, please have your diamond jewelry reappraised for your insurance policies. I wanted to upgrade my diamond studs. I have two pairs because I have two piercings in each ear. That is not going to be happening anytime soon...at least not to get the cut, color and clarity I want.

I am in shock! I just looked at 1.5 VS2 G's and they are in the 20ks! You use to get 2 carats in the 20ks. :o I am super curious what will happen to prices. I really think they will come down kind of like what happened a couple of years ago.

Price isn't about to change until the US$ is sorted. The troubles with the US economy, and the burgeoning demand in growing wealth markets is changing the pricing realities as the US$ is just getting caned.

Used to be that everything could be measured in US$ changes over time. These days I struggle to find a constant currency as everything shifts. I am enjoying online shopping in the US tremendously though - historic pricing barriers and benchmarks have meant that a LOT of things are ridiculously underpriced in the US vs a lot of the world.

Australia is the exact opposite of course. Wonder how long this brand 'arbitrage' opportunity will exist before big brands need to shift their basic cost structure in the US as well.
