How important is "A Cut Above" when buying from Whiteflash?

My boyfriend has been searching for a diamond to put in my engagement ring. There is one that has really caught his eye on Whiteflash, so he had me sign up for this site for the discount. Here is the diamond

From what we have seen on PS, as well as on Whiteflash, A Cut Above Hearts and Arrows diamonds are Whiteflash's premium diamonds. Because of the time of year, Whiteflash and other vendors are quite picked over. My Tacori setting can accommodate up to a 1.4 ct diamond, and Whiteflash did not have any ACA's that were of the quality that we are looking for. I don't know much about diamonds, so I was just wanting another opinion. I think this Expert Selection is my dream diamond, but are there any fatal flaws? We could hold out for an ACA, but I also want my ring now!

That looks like a gorgeous stone. I'm also looking at ACAs vs ES and haven't found any ACAs that fit my criteria, so I may end up going the ES route. (I've owned both in the past and both were equally beautiful - my ES had a smaller table than my ACAs, so that was the ONLY part about the cut that looked different and that was just that stone, as I'm seeing a lot of ACAs that have a table size similar to the ES I owned.)

It looks like an outstanding diamond! I see nothing that would cause me to eliminate it.

We were looking at this one at one stage and I would have been happy with it but my SO wanted an ACA in the 1.5 carat range. I think the reason it is an ACA is because the lower girdle is 80% and star length of 56. Most ACA or BG Signature diamonds have lower girdle of 77-76% and star length 55. I'm not sure how that would affect the diamond performance though, perhaps not much. Are you getting your Tacori through Whiteflash too? Which style would it be?

Edit to add: Now I remember reading somewhere that the reason Whiteflash keeps their lower girdle at around 77% and not 80% as most GIA excellent was to have more fires out of the stone. My ACA is indeed very firey. Having said that, a D VS1 of that size with AGS 000 would be an outstanding stone to have!

This is the setting

We ordered it from a local jeweller. We were going to get a diamond there too, but I think we are leaning toward an online purchase now. I am slightly concerned about buying a diamond I have not seen. Whiteflash has suggested that we have the ring sent there when it is ready, and they will set the diamond for us. Would it be wise to first have the diamond sent here and appraised?
Neither of us really have any idea what we are doing in this process. I did not even realize the importance of girdle!

We just bought our engagement ring recently through Whiteflash and I could understand how you feel. But you are in good hands with Whiteflash. Their customer services and products are one of the best. I truly believe that that diamond will be very beautiful. I in fact did talk to my SO about the exact diamond you linked as one of the options, but he was very stubborn about 1.5 carat ACA so he ended up getting me a 1.5 G VS1 ACA (which I am also very happy with). May be that diamond was waiting for you :).

I would let WF set the diamond for you. I thought it was very nice of them to suggest that. They are Tacori dealer so you will have no problem with the ring warrantee and you run no risk of another jeweler chipping the stone and having to deal with all that ensues. We had the ring appraised as a whole after receiving it though not sure my experience in that aspect would be very relevant to you as we are in Australia and never thought of having it appraised before setting. May be other members can offer their insights.

I think it's a beautiful diamond. It probably only narrowly missed being ACA because of the 80% LGF. That is no big deal.

I can't help with the diamond itself, I just wanted to try to put your mind at rest about buying a diamond sight-unseen.

I'm in the UK and just bought my Ering from Brian Gavin, I was so worried that it would get here and it wouldn't sparkle or be clear, but; it's stunning- I wouldn't hesitate to buy another diamond online ever again, with ASETs, the HCA and AGS cut criteria you can buy with confidence online, especially since you're going to a reputable PS recommended vendor- you'll be fine!

There are gorgeous diamonds in many categories, ACA is just the best of the best. The stone you are looking at is gorgeous and I wouldn't hesitate a moment letting WF set it! I have had three wonderful purchases with them and never a problem.

A very nice stone...

Beautiful stone lucky girl how are you setting it

Re: How important is "A Cut Above" when buying from Whitefla

Very nice diamond, probably the only reason it missed ACA was because of the lower girdle halves of 80%. That is not big deal but, are you really color sensitive? Even if you are, an F color diamond is was less expensive than a D color. You could possibly go larger, or cheaper, or ACA if you dropped down from D to F or G.

Re: How important is "A Cut Above" when buying from Whitefla

Well the thing is, he has already ordered the setting to accommodate up to a 1.4, and there are not any ACA's available right now in that range, even if we did go to F. We went and looked at a couple of diamonds tonight at our local jeweller, but he seems to be set on this one. There was one tonight that was a 1.45 ct GIA Hearts and Arrows, E, VS2, for slightly more money. The jeweller said the 1.45 would just fit, but I don't think my future husband likes the idea of paying slightly more for just slightly bigger, but also slightly worse colour and clarity. He also thought the hearts looked better in the picture of this one. So I think this is going to be my diamond, and I am definitely happy with it!
I linked the setting above but here it is again (this site shows it from different angles)

My bf tells me it missed the cut because two of the hearts weren't quite perfect.
And my ring holds up to 7.2mm.

I think it's beautiful and you should go for it! Enjoy!
