I''ve come up against an aspect of my pending setting for my Aqua that I simply can''t answer myself. So, I figured who better to ask help me, than all you wonderfully knowledgeable people.

As it stands right now (literally, lol) my design is at 10mm. I had asked that there be a small amout of space under the culet, as I absolutely love the view of my diamond in my Vatche setting, it''s set the same way. However, I wasn''t taking into account that my Aqua is deeper, at 6.24 mm. When I spoke with the jeweler last, I got the impression he would like me to consider lowering it, he kind of feels that it''s too high. While I really wanted it set that way, I definitely don''t want to jeopardize my stone by constantly whacking it, this is an heirloom, so I can''t replace it. There are only going to be 4 small prongs, so minimal protection.

So, where do most of you draw the line? and would you lower my Aqua if you were me?

Thankies!

hmm ellen, that''s a toughie. my original e-ring is 8mm and it really is pretty high. I''m not sure I''d want a bigger stone set even a touch higher. I totally get wanting to see the culet though. I guess i would say for an every day ring 10mm would be way to high, but if it''s a special occasion ring you might be more protective of it and less likely to bang it around so the little bit of added height on such a deep and large stone might be ok? looks like i''m no help at all

Hey, at least you tried!!

It IS tough. As far as I''m planning, it won''t be an every day ring, more of a special occasion. Unless, I fall head over heels and want to wear it more... hmmm.

My ering is approx 9 mm high from my finger, although it is in a cathedral setting that protects the sides. I love the high style, but would feel a little nervous with only four prongs...I have six, and I feel that compensates a bit for the extra wear the stone gets due to the height.

In general though, I wear my ring every day, work out with it on, and feel totally comfortable with the height.

Hope this helps!

jw, thanks. The thing is, this is a square emerald cut, so I can''t do more than 4 prongs. The added worry is that this isn''t a diamond, and therefore softer.

The more I think and talk about this, the more I think I know what my answer''s going to be.

Ellen, my aqua ring is 10mm from the bottom of the head to the top of the stone. It is set with 4 somewhat double prongs [it''s the tulip head]. I have had no problems at all banging it but that could be because I''ve always had higher set rings and so may be used to that sort of thing. If you think you might bang it a lot I would probably lower it a little but if it was for me I would keep it at 10mm.

Hmmmm. I am not familiar with those prongs Michelle, although they sound familiar, I can''t picture them. So, it sounds like they cover a bit more area? I wish I could just KNOW that I''d get used to it, I really want that culet exposed.

LOL, they cover more of the bottom but not at the top if that makes any sense. It wouldn''t help you to expose your culet [

] and I''ve only seen them for rounds. Here''s a picture....

Ah, I see. Very pretty, but alas, it would not help show my nekkie culet.

Thanks!

That's tough, because I love the culet view too.

I'd definitely lower it, though, because it's an heirloom. Just by a hair, though.

My ering is about 8.5mm. That's probably my cutoff.

Can't wait to see it!

Thanks coati. It just seems crazy that a few mm can make that much difference....But I guess it can. *sob*

Oh I like that setting posted above
