How can you tell if a diamond has painting or digging?

Will it be indicated on the lab report?

How can painting and digging be seen in various diamond images?

Thanks for your help!

I think I found my own answer, at least for AGS:

“The AGS Laboratories screens every diamond for potential treatments like High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT), fracture filling, and laser drilling. The AGS Laboratories will grade an HPHT-treated diamond if the fact of its treatment is disclosed upon receipt. The AGS Laboratories does not grade fracture-filled diamonds. However, the AGS Laboratories does grade diamonds that have been laser drilled. All treatments are disclosed in the "Comments" section of an AGS Laboratories diamond grading report.”

A diamond with severe painting/digging may not be awarded GIA Ex or AGS ideal for cut grade.
Some signs of minor/moderate painting and digging can be seen in IS or ASET images.
If you are an experience prosumer, you can see it without any tool or magnification.

Painting and digging are part of how the diamond is cut so wouldn’t be listed as a type of treatment

Would it be shown on the report as part of the cut then?

No. It’s not a cut per se, it’s an element of how a cut is done. Read the link above and you’ll see what I mean

Please forgive me as Inhave a feeling I’m being stupid ... but which link do you mean? The one with the ASET images? (except at the extremes, I can’t see it ...). Or the AGS link that I posted and thought I read?

Another apology ... errrgh

And in particular, can you tell if this has been painted or dug out? Now I’m paranoid, lol

Very very minor painting. completely normal even for a super ideal cut. I am ok with this.
very minor digging.

Read this.

In general, the lab report won't tell you if your diamond has digging/painting, unless the diamond is downgraded to GIA VERY GOOD despite having right proportions/symmetry/polish or reduction in Contrast or Brightness in AGS report. Even those cases, you need the ASET image to confirm to see what's going on.

No apology needed ;)2 I meant the link @crbl999 had posted above your post with the AGS link - it had useful examples as every time I’ve tried to work out what painting and digging is from the descriptions alone, it’s made no sense. But the pictures help.

I agree with @flyingpig . Minimal painting/digging on this stone. ASET looks excellent. You bought a great stone. No n=d to have any doubts. IMO it is one of WF top cut ACAS with minimal painting/digging and great proportions if I recall correctly.
