How do these earrings go on?

How do these work? Does anyone wear this style? I feel like without a backing, the earring would just flip downwards with gravity

This is probably a stupid question, but are they definitely earrings?! I can’t really see a way that they’d look good and be comfortable or secure at the same time.

The only thing I wondered is whether the loop part is designed to hook over a stud - the dangling ball part would then (sort of) extend a stud into a dangle? It’d be a very rigid dangle though, as it’s a fixed wire.

I’ve clearly failed this particular IQ test..!

They are earrings. The old-fashioned Chinese style for high karat gold (usually 22 or 24K). Just twist open and twist back to close.
