How closely do the side stones need to match the main stone?

Help please from the experts!

I have an E VS1 EC that I would like to re-set some time in the future, and one of the designs I am considering is a 3-stone bezel.

When my mum was selecting stones for her 6-stone step cut square band, she bought two of the larger stones, about 0.4ct each from the same parcel, with the intention of setting them as earrings for me at a later date. That was over 30 years ago, and she is going to give them to me to do as I please (she has already given me her 6-stone band).

I thought of using these 2 stones as side stones for my EC re-set, however, I notice that they are not as white as my EC, more like G/H. The difference is noticeable in this picture too, my EC in the middle with the 6-stone band to its right.

The 3-stone setting I have in mind would have each stone individually bezel-set, something like this:

Would the colour difference between the main stone and the side stones too significantly different for it to work?

It will save me a small fortune not having to fork out two 0.4ct side stones for the new ring.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

The setting you choose is beautiful. If it's closer to G I think you will be ok since they don't sit directly next to the center but have metal between them. Not sure about an H.

I don't agree, I can clearly see the difference in colour when the other ring is sitting a mile away from your centre stone and so can you, so if it gets put closer it is only going to be more noticeable not less so. It is up to you if you can live with that or not. It is a beautiful setting btw!!!!

Thanks ladies for your input.

I put the two rings side by side in daylight indoors, and the colour difference is less noticeable.

Another ring design I have in mind is something like this, bezel set the stones instead of prongs, and have a halo around each, on a plain court shank:

It looks quite chunky in the pic, however, it will be right hand ring and will suit my chunky size 10.5 middle finger! 8-)

If I decide not to use the stones, then they will be turned into a pair of channel set 4-stone huggies along with my mum's diamond band, so they will be not be wasted or unloved.

Or a channel set bangle, or a diamond by the yard type bracelet, etc. etc...

On their own, they will be too small for my fat earlobes as studs.

I normally wear one diamond ring on one hand and a coloured stone or pearl ring on the other.

My own EC will always be the diamond ring of choice as it means a lot more to me than my mum's band. Hence the latter is destined to be re-cycled into another piece of jewellery.

As you're already concerned about the possibility of colour mismatch, and they are step cuts AND you have other options for the prospective sides, why not simply ' follow your heart' and consider new sides for this particular project?

Sure, it does add extra cost to your ring project but once it is put together, the peace of mind will be priceless. :)

I put the two rings side by side in sunlight, and the colour difference is obvious to me, another idea to save on cost dashed as I know it will bug me had I gone ahead with it, nevermind. :(

Back to Plan A, and that is to set the ring in this setting, with a minor modification (plain and wider court shank):

This is the design I keep going back to, as seen on ERD's website.
