How Big is too Big?

saw the title of this thread i thought you gals was gonna talk about something interesting....:naughty:

LOL!

There are some gorgeous gorgeous rings on Leon Mege's website that are 3 cts and up with three row pave. I would rock any of those ina heartbeat, not too big at all.

With three row pave, I think it comes down to how it is done. If it is delicate and not too clunky, it can look great with large stones. If you have great quality stones and a nicely made setting, it will not look fake. You may hurt some eyes with all that bling, but that's ok! :sun:

Thank you so much everyone for all your advice and help. My ring size is 5 and I'm a psych grad student so my profession will be Clinical Psychologist. Many of my friends aren't marriage yet but my mom is getting ready to get a 4-5ct center diamond ring w/ side stones. I think I will be staying around 2.4-2.7 so I can still have the pave setting as well as the larger stone without it seeming like too much.

Dancing- your comment made me laugh.

while beautiful, that ring is a little large for my tastes. thanks for linking though! it is always interesting to see the pics and handshots

depends on the hand size and setting....but one that I think is too big is Khole Kardashian's...

I don't find justme's ring too big at all, I could rock that one and one a bit bigger with no problem!

I don't know any clinical psychologists who wear any bling at all (I am in the field too). Something to consider! Look around at people working in your future job. I would personally opt for something that won't stand out too much in that profession. A little above the norm, sure, but not waaaaaay out there.

When my gf first started looking at rings she was told by the jeweller anything over a carat (for a single diamond) wouldn't look good on her 4 1/2 size finger, and considering it's in the jewellers 'best' interest to make a large sale you would have to have trusted their opinion. (Obviously the real best interest is finding a diamond & setting that the customers loves, and is within budget)

hee hee... it is in his best interest to make a sale, period. He probably sized her up and thought that under one carat was about what she would get -- and that is indeed was the vast majority of women get -- or maybe she implied that, and thus pitched his sale that way. 8)

Weirdly enough, I also had a jeweler tell me to buy the smaller diamond - and this is while I was also considering the larger one! I have a size 4.5 finger also, and I was looking at princess cut solitaires. I tried on a 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 2 carat. He told me that he thought the 1.25 carat diamond looked perfect on my finger and that the 1.5 looked a bit overwhelming, even though I was actually favoring the 1.5 carat stone (which was about $3k more).

I found that to be unusual, because he was trying to make a sale, and I was obviously leaning towards the 1.5 carat. I guess it is all personal taste, but like I said, I figured that he would have been trying to get me to buy the larger diamond.

We did not end up shopping there, but we did end up going with a 1.5 carat diamond - my FF and I both agreed that we love that size on my finger, and are even considering going up to 2 carats in the future (although I'm not sure that I will want to, just because of the sentimental value of this diamond). :)

That's actually a sales tactic. It makes you think he/she is more trustrworthy and therefore you're more likely to buy. I guess the joke son them!

That explains it! That actually happened to me in the Cartier store in NY. The sales lady told me and then BF to stay with 1.6 and that I really didn't need to go bigger.

Paris, I'm sure your ring is going to be lovely. I agree with many of the others that I prefer larger stones in simpler settings, but I think a 2.4-2.7 will look amazing in three-row pave. Good luck!

So is it a catch 22 situation for the jeweller? If he says less than 1 carat suits you best he's trying to seem more trustworthy, honest and selling what he may have in stock, but if he says 'go for larger than 1 carat' you think he's just trying to make you spend more money and get a bigger sale? As of yet I've yet to go in to a B&M jewellers, so have no experience with their sales tactics.

(Luckily I found this place & have been recommended diamond vendors and ring designers, and if you guys trust them then they're good enough for me!)

I wish I knew! I'm still trying to figure out if a 1.8 carat round in a halo would be too big for my finger.

I think some rings can border on cocktail ring territory. But usually those are halos. A timeless solitaire doesn't ever really look fake to me, even if it's 3 + carats.

Hey Paris, I got my 2.66ct solitaire today and I have to say I was very surprised at how large it looked in its setting. I knew the diamond was a good size, but it definitely looks bigger to me now that it's set than it did when it was simply loose. Personally, I don't think I'd be comfortable wearing anything larger on a daily basis since this baby really stands out.

I remember when I tried on a 2.6ct at Tiffany's and thought oh, I could go a little bigger. Well, I think I made that mistake since I was looking at the whole package (particularly the wider shank), and now that I have a thin, delicate shank (which is what I wanted), I don't think any bigger would look very good. So I guess I'm saying you really need to try on exactly what you want to buy to get the best idea of what is too big to you, because that is all that matters.

Slg47- Thanks for the link that ring is absolutely gorgeous. It looks pretty close actually almost identical to my setting and wedding band. I love it, gives me idea what everything will look like together.

Calibali-Congratulations. I'm so happy your ring is here. I can't wait to see pics. It sounds like it just perfect for you! I'm glad to hear you are happy with the turn out. I'm definitely going to go in and make sure the diamond and setting (1) work well together (2) looks right on my finger (size wise) and (3) make sure I am comfortable with the size. Thanks for everything.

i would happily wear 100 carat if it's a cushion.. like the regent :naughty:

No such thing as too big, ha ha!! :naughty:

I recently tried on a 6ct D IF oval diamond with trilliant sides (yeah, didn't think either shape was my fave :loopy: ) at Leviev when I visited Singapore recently and it was absolutely GORGEOUS!! (I also almost fainted from the excitement cos this place has rocks of 60ct, 70ct etc...really I'm not kidding!! :saint: ).

Mind you though, apart from the occasional big bling, most diamonds I've seen in Shanghai are in the 1-2ct range and they look beautiful too.

So it's just a matter of personal taste and whatever you feel comfy with.

I'm no help, ha ha, LOL!!
