How big is this diamond?

Correction:heart attack.

To me, I can''t judge finger size in photos. So, that makes judging the size of the stone near impossible. 4 carats does sound like a lot, but I can see that being the case if you were talking TCW. I can also see the ring being $40,000 depending on the stats and who sold the ring.

As others mentioned, I think it''s pretty rude to ask the size of a ring unless it''s a really close friend or family member. I''m not engaged yet, but I don''t think I''ll walk around IRL to tell everyone the weight of my diamond. I''ll probably share that info with close friends and family if they ask.

rude to ask... period. (even if it is a close friend or family member.)

However she told its weight and $ amount to her friend (its sounds like unsolicited), that said... it is a gorgeous ring... and 4ctw, or 4ct for the center stone - either way- she must be walking around w/ either a STEEP stone or mammoth hands.

I think that is possible that her ring is 4ctw. My ring is 2.2center stone and 1.65 on the band. And it does not look that big. Her diamond looks like a 2.5 ct cushion.

Even if it is 1.5 to 2.5 carats, that's still a pretty big diamond.

I know most of my acquaintance, if asked, would give their tcw as their "how many carats", because that's what the jewelers told their fiances and what their fiances told them. It's entirely possible that she truly believes her ring is 4 carats.

I actually take a kind of perverse pleasure in answering people who ask how many carats my engagement ring is, because they never expect me to say "under one....tcw!" And then I beam at them.

Not to get off topic, but I asked my mom about the size of her ring when she first got engaged. I wasn''t there when her fiance proposed and wanted to get a visual picture of the ring. I believe that''s the only person I ever asked.

On a flip note, when classmate of mine got engaged, she asked me to guess how many carats it was. This was well before PS so, I said "around a carat". It turns out that the center stone about a little over 1.5 carats and with the side stones, it was around 2 carats total weight (of course she supplied this info willingly). I don''t think she was offended.

My guess 1.5ct - 1.8ct, but definitley under 2. The halo also makes it face up much larger.

From the OP I don''t think that the friend asked. I got the idea that the Bride was running around bragging and sharing the price and that that just shocked the friend and our OP.

Personally I''m glad that PS allows us to be nosy about finger sizes and gemstone weights and how that translates into finger coverage! I just try hard not to take it outside of PS.
