Shame on me for doing this....Curious about the size of this diamond. I have no idea ring size....Thoughts?

oooh.. Fess up what''s the scandal? Its hard to know without knowing the ring size, but I think it''s about a 2 carat center stone.

Ok, ok....It is a friend''s SIL''s E-ring. My friend does not know much about diamonds, carat weight, etc. She emailed me pictures from the wedding and said that her SIL''s ring was over 4 cts. And the PSer in me got to thinking.."Well, it doesn''t appear to me 4 cts".

I know this isn''t the most tasteful thing to do, and I would never share my "findings" with her. Just wondering what others thought. Forgive me.

I think I will go with sizzle''s guess, around 2 cts.

Maybe total carat weight is around 4? However, the center looks to be about 2 - 2.5. Its hard to tell without knowing anything.

Is that a radiant or cushion? If the first, I''d say about 1.5 carat or less. Radiants have a tendency to look a little smaller than their actual weight.

Ditto, maybe its the tcw.

Winks Elf..No idea. Interesting what you said about Radiants..I never knew that, in fact my e-ring is a radiant and I think it looks larger than it''s carat weight, then again I think I may be horribly biased

Seriously, I think there are ALOT of people around here who have thought about it! I would agree that it MIGHT be 4ct TOTAL, but unless her ring size is a 12, that''s NOT a 4 carat center stone!

I would agree with the others, 4cts total weight for the ring possibly but not for the centre stone itself.

To me it looks like a 1.5ish ...I''m having trouble believing the 4 ctw but who knows???

Def not 4 cts in the center.

I wonder where your friend got the idea that her ring is "over 4 carats?" Even if she means 4 carats total weight (the SIL or the friend), it doesn''t look like it could even be 4 carats total weight... but I''m not an expert.

It''s a lovely ring but not a jaw-dropping 4 carats!

I don''t think it''s 4 ct total weight and certainly not in the center. I guessed 1.5-2ct for the center stone.

Gleam, my friend does not get along with her SIL and was appalled when the SIL was "..bragging at her wedding that her fiance spent 40K on her e-ring". She mentioned to me that it was 4 cts. My friend is a diamond virgin and didn''t know any better.

LOL Wow! I don't blame you and your friend for being curious. The SIL sounds... not very nice. I wonder if she's telling people it's 4 carats? Because 95% of people will know better... even those only casually interested in diamonds.

I am a Size 3 and am wearing 1ct Cushion, set in a halo. I think the proportion of her ring on her hand is the same like mine. And her finger appear to be thin too. Here is mne for the record so you can somehow get an idea.

Maybe it is 4 carats for the e-ring and wedding band? (since she just got married). I''m in agreement with the others that her ring is no where near 4 carats.

Ditto to what everyone else is saying... Since her fingers look rather slender, I''d say the center stone is probably at most 2 cts.

Never really understood the whole bragging about money or carat weight thing...?! To me it seems like people who do that are trying to draw negative attention to themselves and their ring... My thought is let people think on their own that it''s a 4 carat $40k ring, but don''t tell them that! This forum is the only place where it feels OK to share that kind of information. A girl I ran into the other day exclaimed "How many carats is your diamond?!?!?" With tons of people around us too ... Ah! I just looked at her and said "It''s plenty."

Wonderful response..I hope I remember that the next time I am asked..For some reason I always feel obligated to provide the details, it is entirely unnecessary.

I can''t really take credit for it... My darling grandma - who unfortunately is no longer with us - used to say "pa-lenty" with her sing-song voice about things like that all the time. I decided after feeling uncomfortably forced into divulging the unnecessary details that "pa-lenty" is going to be my cheeky response with a wink. :)

This made me chuckle - so classy in this "old world" way that only wonderful old ladies manage. I love that answer!

As for the original question - 2 cts at most and I certainly don''t see the halo totalling to another 2ctw, but I could be wrong.

COULD be, if it was a really deep stone, if she has like size 8 fingers, and if she means TCW. Also the price could definitely be that if she got it a a big name B&M... BWAAAAA-HA-HA... but WE know she probably could have gotten more bang for those bucks (or same bang for less bucks) if she and her fiancee knew about Pricescope!!!!

** I felt so bad on Saturday I was in a high end B&M in Boston last Saturday, and this poor guy came in and said "I want to buy my girlfriend a nice diamond, but I don''t know anything about them.... " and the guy was all over him, blowing him away with useless information (she wanted a ''Boston'' setting, and the salesman didn''t know what that was, so he was guessing)... I just wanted to slip him a pieces of paper with this web address!

Oh I love this response!! Gotta say I would tell most of my friends if they asked. Hoping to get them into diamonds and colored stones! But folks I don''t know really well, or if they ask me in a crowd. Plenty!! Thanks.

I bet the ring is 4 ct total weight with the wedding band, and really they paid WAY too much. So sad.

2 carats on a 4.5 finger size.

I think we need to take under consideration how diamonds look bigger in photos. Personally, I think the diamond is between 1.5-1.75 carats, on a 4.5-5 finger.

OH MY GOD-- THAT''S MY RING AND MY HAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding. Gotcha!

4.26ct center stone, modern brilliant cushion
But IRL and on my size 4.75 finger, honestly, it looks like a 3ct. Deep stone
