Dear friends,

I'm hoping for some advice regarding what can be done for this damaged stone. Would it be possible to have her recut? The poor thing has been unloved and unworn for years and I think she deserves better. Maybe a second life as a pendant.

Specs: uncertified, under 1 ct, purchased in nyc years ago, high color, with an inclusion that I used to be able to see but now I cant lol

If anyone can recommend a vendor that can assist me, I would greatly appreciate it. Local NYC vendors are preferred but I'll consider anyone that offers great service.

Thank you!

I can't tell from the picture, but is that a large feather/crack on the upper lefthand side? If it is, I think it would lose so much weight to recut that it might not be worth doing. But you can certainly look into it. I can't give you the name of cutters, but I have seen one or two mentioned around here before.

Diamondseeker--Thanks so much for responding.

Yes, the dull strip at the upper left is the chipped area. Clearly this isn't a high dollar item but it does have sentimental value so I wanted to try saving it. I'm wondering if the chance for further damage is higher when trying a recut due to the odd shape and existing chip.

OP, I know that Brian Gavin has done diamond rehab and recently, I read that someone used David Klass. Perhaps, it is worth reaching out to both vendors to inquire further. You might lose a significant carat amount, but at least you will be able to enjoy it!

If it's sentimental, I probably wouldn't even bother with a recut bc it might lose too much weight or it might not even make it through if it's already chipped. I'd repurpose it into something you could wear. I like these 2 ideas, both of which should provide sufficient protection to the stone....a hexagon type bezel necklace with the marquise set with tiny prongs (https://www.etsy.com/listing/386968...search_query=hexagon&ref=shop_items_search_26)

Or just a plain bezel:

Hi Mrsblue,
A skilled cutter may be able to work miracles.
I've seen stones that looked really badly damaged come back looking very nice, and not losing a lot of weight.
Of course, no one can make a detailed assesment without looking at the stone in person.....but don't give up hope!

If it cannot be recut without losing much of its weight I love @ac117 's suggestion of bezeling it and repurposing it into something you will enjoy and wear.
Good luck and I hope it can be recut for you.

That is a giant feather. Cutting it (if possible) would likely yield less than a third.

Could you have it (Gasp!) fracture filled?

I agree with others, not worth the expense and size loss to justify a recut. I’d spend my money on a nice bezel setting for a necklace, even add a modest diamond halo around it, and love it and enjoy it as is.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughtful advice.

I hadnt considered a bezel setting but I like the idea very much. I needed an everyday necklace anyway and this would be perfect. Yellow gold,milgrain-I love it already!

I'll be sure to post pics when it's done.

It will make a lovely pendant! Delicate, yet substantial. Please do come back with pics.
