Help! I''m driving myself crazy

! I have a 2.9 Carat Round Brilliant Diamond that I want to place into a platinum three stone lattice setting. I need help deciding what size the size stones should be? I want to compliment the center diamond (it''s gorgeous :), without competing with it. I am thinking about a round .75 on each side . . . will that compete? Should I go down to a round 6.5 on each side or am I missing the boat altogether and the side stones should be closer to a 1 carat? I have read some of the previous posts on this issue but I am still looking for guidance. Thanks in advance!!!!

I am not sure if this ring is for you or your gf, but I would keep in mind your/her finger size. A 2.9 centre is going to give some serious finger coverage no matter what finger size, so I would make sure which ever size sides you are considering don''t overlap the finger. IMHO there is nothing worse than the ring falling over the edge of the finger look. Juts my two cents though

Thanks for responding! My hubby and I are upgrading my existing wedding ring and my fingers are not huge, my ring size is a 5 3/4. I just want the proportions to be right. My jeweler is believes that the .75 round each side is the way to go but of course the decision is mine to make . . . EEK!

Thanks Skippy! Anyother question, if the center stone is a G in color, is it important that the side stones are also a G or can they go down to a H or I??? I''m making myself nuts and I am so happy that I can ask questions of the forum. Your responses are much appreciated!

I do have a 3 stone ring but not all rounds so I will answer this the best that I can. hehe I have a G round brilliant center stone and H side stones. I bet you could probably do an I; just out of curiosity the other day I put my J colored studs next to my G colored stone and it looked fine.

I have a question? Can the jeweler place the stones on your finger so you get an idea of how blingy you want to go? I think that would help a little but things look bigger set. That is a least what I would do to get a better idea of proportions on your hand.

Your project sounds like it is going to be beautiful!!! Can't wait!

You know your a PSers when........ you hear stories like this and you first reaction is to get a ruler, paper and a pair of scissors and try to mimic the size stones we are talking about. Cut out some circles with approx sizes and play around on your fingers, it''s not perfect no, but it would give you an idea of ''real''life sizes''.

I think the jeweller could be right in the ratio of that size stone would look nice, but I think you have to take into account how wide the finished ring would be? A 0.75ct stone would be around the 5.8mm mark (??) (my 0.8ct is 6.00mm so I am just guestimating here), so that puts you over the 10mm mark already, add to that the 2.9ct centre and that''s one wide ring for a 5 3/4 size finger. If that''s what you are going for and you can pull if off - fab, you go girl. I would first though try to figure out how big that puppy''s going to be.

Also, I don''t think you would have a problem at all going down a colour grade for the side stones, but I wouldn''t go more than one grade escpecially in stones of that size.

Don''t forget pics - I am almost drooling already

You have all given me some great suggestions. I am definitely going to try the paper and scissors idea and I checked out the thread that was suggested and it also had some good advice. My hubby seems to think I should go with the .65 sides on my finger size but the jeweler favors the .75 sides and said that he will create a lattice setting in which the side stones sit under and close to the center stone at a slight angle which he thinks is the way to go. I just want it to look amazing and I don''t know which way to go. . .

I am sooo happy for all of your help. Skippy, I checked out your three stone and it is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING

. May I ask what type of side stones are on your ring and what carat size your stones are for comparison purposes. Your ring really is beautiful :) Chelsea

I don''t have a 3-stone, but I do have a 2.36 RB e-ring and two .75 studs, and when I hold them up together (imagining a 3-stone!) it is positively BREATHTAKING!!!

Still, that being said, I think smaller side stones (like .30s or .40s) would be killer, too... something about just *highlighting* the center stone with two small sparklers that is totally drool-worthy!

Really, IMVHO, you can''t go wrong with whatever you choose, all the various different *looks* are LOVELY in their own way! Whatta FUN project, have FUN!!!

Angeline, thanks for Lizzy''s info. I checked out her ring and LIZZY sure is one LUCKY lady! Lynn, that was another good idea to hold your earrings up to your solitiare to get a visual! I still want to compliment the center stone and not compete with it but I am leaning toward the .75 sides after all of the pic''x that all of you have so graciously shared with me. This forum really is amazing.

Chelsea, you are so sweet, thank you!!!

My center stone is 1.5 carats and the side stones are .25 each; I think your 2.9 carat with .75 sides would be stunning. Keep us posted please, I can wait to see this glorious ring!
