Help with this ASET Image, is this a good diamond?

So this is a bad image right? Is it possible that it's a bad shot? Is it normal to have that much white by the arrows? I'm building diamond stud earrings for my wife.

The diamond was graded by IGI. Color is G and Clarity is Si2. 1.01 carats. HCA is 1.2. I can't find the crown and pavilion angle as they took down the diamond info online but the table is 56 and the depth is 61.5. I'm waiting on the ASET for the other diamond right now.

Definitely steer clear of IGI stones bc the grading isn't reliable. So the values aren't guaranteed to be accurate. Stick with GIA/AGS.

In this case my price dictates igi graded diamonds. Which is the I picked G since my plan was to buy H colored diamonds. As for the clarity, it's not as important for studs right?

I think IGI is over priced bc you have no idea what you're actually getting. I'd prefer smaller stones that are well cut, as they are likely to look better and sparkle more. Are you willing to share budget/ preferred size?

You could consider Man Made Diamonds / Laboratory Grown Diamonds if you want/need to reach a certain size but are limited on budget.

What’s your budget?

Idjewelry also has good prices and you can request better diamonds

My budget is 2700 a stone so 5500 total. 2 carat total weight. These are man made stones.

So the ASET image shows poor light quality?

If we are discussing MMDs, this thread may have to be moved into the Lab Grown Diamonds section of the forum.

Check out @Rhino's August Vintage Inc website - I'm not sure he has anything in your price range at the moment but drop him a line because he might be able to source something that suits. He is very focused on excellent cut quality, so you would be in good hands :)

I'd prefer a mined diamond if it falls into my price range but I'm not here to discuss certificates or mined. I just wanted to see what people's opinions were on the ASET image.

My view is that it's not a good ASET, and that you're likely overpaying bc of the IGI certificate.

See the reference chart below. I think most would agree this falls in the "above average - very good" category.

While I do prefer ideal cut mined diamonds myself, I understand and respect the big picture goal you are trying to make. If I were considering lab grown diamonds, I'd have to take a serious look at the DeBeer's LightBox stones. Granted, you have to buy them in a setting and then go through the hassle and expense of re-setting; however, at about $800 per carat you can quickly see how this could be cost advantageous for you.

In short, the days of over priced lab growns are on the horizon.

Also, regarding grading, etc I found these two articles particularly interesting, especially since you are trying to combat the desire for a GIA H by bumping to an IGI G.

Looking on RareCarat, I was able to source some H's that may work. I'd like to see these proportions more similar to one another but I think they could still work. Also, if you were willing to drop to GIA J color, you'd open up your options even more although I understand that color sensitivity is a real thing.

Lastly, I might add that I'd call ID Jewelry and see what they could source for you. They deal in both mined and lab grown diamonds. And since you aren't hung up on certificates, they will have access to IGI/GIA/AGS as well as non-certified stones. Most importantly, if you tell Yeukitel that you are looking for PS quality stones, he will know that you are seeking an ideal cut stone and there are countless success stories here where he was able to source stones on shoe string budgets that seemed impossible.

The last two options for studs might work for you, although it would be maximum 1ct. I don't know if this helps at all. You could also look at diamond bistro, loupe de troope for preloved studs...some awesome deals are there!

Just discussing the ASET and ignoring the everything else.
When not shopping super-ideals, I like to grade ASET images based on pass/fail.
Is it indicative of a potentially high light return diamond or not.
In this case it passes the test.

sorry I misread! I meant the 1.5 ctw total on idj

Thanks for the replies. A couple of other things to add.

1. This is a push gift for my wife, so it's not a surprise and I am on a time crunch (Jan 9th)
2. They're twin boys so because she's giving me my gift the earrings have to be .97 carats+
3. She's ok with man made but condition 2 has to be met.

Lightbox doesn't have 2 CTW diamond studs. I'm looking for super-ideals so I guess I'll continue shopping around.

The diamond stated above is 2,000.

If you're looking for super ideals, then the only real options are ACA by WF, signature by BGD, or CBI by HPD. There are other stones that might have specs that fall into potential "super ideal" ranges, but those are the only brands I'm aware of who actually cut "super ideal" stones. Just as an FYI!

EDIT. you won't find a super ideal 1ct stone for 2.7K, unfortunately. I just tried, and even in much lower colors (think K, L,M,N it's not going to happen at that price).

Rhino is providing MRB MMDs with AGS000 specs - they are a good deal cheaper than Mined!

What's the best way to contact Rhino for prices?

His contact details will be on August vintage website. If you want to get a lab diamond I’m sure the lab diamond forum will have lots of advice and help
