Hello there,

I like to make a ring similar to this one:

The setting is going to be the biggest expense for my project and I was hoping maybe some of you have came across something like the above that is quite reasonable.

What I am looking for is basically a delicate band that has that pave or channel diamonds, but i dont want it all the way around the band. I also dont want something too thick. As for the head, I want something simple, as I dont like more diamonds on the prongs.

The cheapest thing I found so far has been on good old gold's website:

Will GOG sell the setting and can they set a coloured stone in for me? I have asked the local places around here for setting a stone in and they want 100-200$ >
Should I be worried about the little diamonds falling out as this will be an everyday ring?
Also, since I havent narrowed down exactly the oval I will be getting, are stock rings like the one from GOG able to accommodate differences in oval sizes, or am I forced to go and do a custom setting?

a stone I am currently considering is 8.5 x 6.5 mm and 1.95 ct
 
That's kind of high for 1/10 of a carat. . .

I also know selectgem.com has an amazing deal on a mount (not on the site, so email), but I don't know if it can be altered, since it has some additional side diamonds going on.

For a simple design like you want, (pave band, oval head) most jewelers can saw the head off of most rings and can easily solder an oval head on. The heads come in tons of sizes, so that's no big deal.

The design you showed looks easy to find, basically a half eternity style. Yes, GOG has experience setting coloured gemstones. Have you asked them if they will sell you the setting and set the stone for you? If done correctly and worn with care, you should be able to wear this style of ring everyday. The head of the ring in the GOG picture can be changed out to accommodate different sizes.

If you are getting a setting that has diamonds in the prongs, then yes, you should be concerned about the little diamonds falling out. With custom or even better commercial rings those prongs will be designed to be heavier in order to hold those little diamonds without bending and having the diamonds fall out. If you get the cheapest thing available with diamonds in the prongs, then you could end up with a ring which has prongs that are not heavy enough to hold the diamonds over time. Remember that those little diamonds all have little dimples in the gold beneath them which effectively makes the prongs that much thinner. Also the settings with diamonds in the prongs have to fit the stone size pretty closely, since any bending of the prongs will loosen the small diamonds.

The second setting that you've shown does not have diamonds in the prongs and so can easily accommodate a somewhat smaller or larger stone.
 
On a related note as Michael_E, what metal are you planning on using for your e-ring? I had initially been very concerned about finding a tough, durable setting. But I love beaded diamondwork. As a partial compromise I did a bezel, but then I also got my ring done in palladium. It's not as expensive as platinum, but it's in the platinum family and is similarly tough. So when your mini prongs are holding in the diamonds along the band, the prongs are less likely to bend or rub away over the course of time. And with the price of gold being what it is, palladium would probably actually be cheaper than gold.

I would second the recommendation of idjewelry, as their site had a lot of stuff when we were looking for an e-ring. Also, have you spoken with a local jeweler? Sometimes their pricing is decently competitive (or at least in the same ballpark) and they will check your prongs (and clean the ring) for free whenever you want to come in. Many places will also guarantee that if you come in every 3-4 months to have your prongs checked, that they will replace any lost melee diamonds for free.

I am not thinking of diamonds on the prongs -- I want a simple ring with only the band having the little diamonds. The head i like like as low as possible but nothing too crazy, just simple prongs :) (but no cathedral head)

My initial ring searching had made me realize what I wanted in a round stone is hard to find or beyond my budget, which was why I am now reconsidering ovals -- but after seeing that pink sapphire ring, I am going to stick to what I really want -- a nice sparkly round 6-7mm bluepurple colour change spinel/sapphire :)

I am hesitate to go local - the places ive visited charge around the same price for something w/o diamonds PLUS 100-200 dollars on top for setting the stone it. Most of them dont even know anything about coloured stones and this being my first coloured stone ring (plus, it'll be my "engagement" ring) i rather not chance it. The only place that seemed like they know what they were doing, didnt do a really good job on that resizing of my platnium ring and the prices were in my opnion, quite high. ($90 to resize platnium rings --- we didnt realize the ring was platnium so I was charged only $50). It also turned out the ring had a radium finish which of course got partially burned off -- told me it would be extra $90 to redip the ring. But the ring is only $250 brand new!

Do you want the PSers to start looking for you? Do you want deep, vivid colors or pastels? Is there a particular price that you'd like to stick around?

I have only been looking at the common guys (dan stair,barry etc. ) because I am not sure about other vendors.

Out of what I can see, I like the GemRite one the best -- I dont want something too dark though. I will contact D&J rare gems and find out a bit more.

I really should start a new thread for this :D
