Hi all. I've spent a countless number of hours this past week researching an engagement ring for my girlfriend and would like some advice before I pull the trigger! I've narrowed it down to Round, only Excellent cut in a either H or G colour and eye clean SI1 is fine. She has very small hands and the petite ring should hopefully make it look quite nice. It will go in this setting. www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/platinum-petite-pave-engagement-ring-flush-fit-item-56280

I have this diamond on hold at James Allen for the next 24 hours so will hopefully make a decision before then: www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.66-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-5625321

It's priced at $2140 and that's about the budget i'm looking at spending. (Maybe up to 2240 if there's a diamond that's better bang for your buck) I've asked JA and i've been advised it's eye clean. I've also ran it through the HCA and it came back with a 0.8 score but not quite sure how to interpret that. The table and depth falls within the ideal range as does the crown and pavilion from the research i've done so technically it should have a bit of sparkle. I'm just not sure if there's a better bang for your buck diamond or if I should just buy this one?

I'm a bit exhausted reading hours on end about it all so would just like some confirmation from somebody who knows what they're looking for that this diamond is the best I can get given my criteria! Any help would be appreciated!

Request an idealscope image and post it here. The pavilion depth is reported as 42.5% which means the average pavilion angle is between 40.5 and 40.6. If one of the pavilion angles is less than 40.45, obstruction may occur. @TreeScientist is knowledgeable about this.

Thanks for your reply! I contacted them via chat and unfortunately they don't have any idealscope images of it.

For clarification, are they unable to get an idealscope image of it? If they don't have any on file, ask if they are able to get you one.

They don't have one on file, and I asked for clarification if they're able to get one at all and they said no.

"I am sorry, we would not be able to get an idealscope image of this diamond"

Hi @1jwoz -

Looks good to me - nice diamond.

As for the setting, pay the premium and get JA to give you claw prongs. Make it CLEAR to them that you want delicate claw prongs. With a small diamond, the prongs can overwhelm the stone. So make sure they understand you want as small prongs as you can get. I'm not sure what the cost is - maybe $200? - but it's worth every penny and makes it look a lot more classy and elegant.

All up, this will be a lovely ring and I'm guessing she will be thrilled. What size is her finger?

Proportionally it looks nice, it looks too clean to be si1 although I can make it a diffuse cloud. You must ask the gemologist to compare the stone to a well cut vs1 stone and see if it is at all dulled or cloudy in a variety of lighting conditions. It was awarded si1 for a reason and if it looks too good to be to be true, it probably is.

You can get a JA affinity discount added as well.
