Hi. Would appreciate some input on the "potential" for this oval brilliant. The jeweler is " confidant" in the beauty of this diamond. He is some distance away so would really appreciate the "expert" opinions b/4 I make the drive. Specs are : Oval Brilliant , 1.09 ct., Color F, Clarity VS2, measurements 7.98 x 5.68 x 3.69 mm. Depth 65.0 , Table 56.0, Crown 16.2, Pavilion 44.2, girdle thin to sl. thick , polish and symm. good , fluor none , cutlet none. EGL- USA cert. Price $6300. States very "scant" bow-tie and price is firm. Please give me an idea if this is worth a look? Thank you.

It seems expensive to me, if you look up similar stones. On the deep side, but no idea if it's worth a look or not.

I thought I read on PS that depth minimizes a bow-tie. If that''s the case the depth would be positive.

Anyone else?

If you do a general search on Pricescope for a G-VS2 with GIA report as follows:

Oval shape, 1.05–1.15 cts, G color, VS2 clarity, 56–68.5% depth, 51–67% table

You get many diamonds with prices quite a bit lower than the EGL F-VS2 you have located. The issue of "value" rides along with the issue of color grade accuracy and the typical discount on price applied to EGL graded stones.

You can tighten the search parameters to have less depth. I''d suggest doing this. You can make a search for EGL stones at F-VS2 and compare, too.

Whatever the more depth may do to decrease a bow tie, there will be a trade off in decreasing visual size. Moderation is key to this set of compromises. Bow ties are common in ovals, pears and marquise shapes.

Thank you for your input. I understand what you are saying. I guess I am getting frustrated as I have returned two internet purchases from reputable vendors for "like " diamonds in "numbers" anyway , both in the $5000-5500 range. No sparkle, etc... I suppose poor cuts. I spoke with this jeweler this a.m. and he states he DOES discount some EGL diamonds, but it is done on an individual basis. He states he has many other stones with GIA cert. that have "great" numbers, compare in specs , that he could show me, that are less money but I would "see" the difference, side-by side. He went on to say that insisting on G.I.A. or "discounting" all EGL diamonds was "baloney"....( gave away his age ha ha ) and diamonds must be evaluated on their own worth. This gentleman seemed "passionate" and stated he had been evaluating diamonds for many many years. I know he has been in business since 1955 and has an excellent reputation. He "suggested" I do my homework .

and I have been trying. However, I also don''t want to make this my "life''s work", either. Anyway, he finally laughed & stated he would sell me a G.I.A. diamond for less , with the same #''s , if it was more important. Does he have a point ? I asked about the 65% depth........his response was that less depth does not guarantee a "better" oval, and his "fancies" are set based on "eyes" ultimately, when comparing diamonds with "like" #''s. I know I am handicapped as I live 100 miles from ANY jewelers....sorry for the long post.

Thank you. That vendor has only one 1.23 VS2 F oval priced at 6527.00...........

no problem; ask them for an equally beautiful oval with your specifications.

Huh?? "old-miner" has suggested $6300.00 may be overpriced.........

that''s what I said, too.

I thought you were looking at Good Old Gold, but they currently don''t have what you are looking for. So I suggested you contact them and ask them to find some ovals with price, carat, color you are looking for.

Well, if "good old gold" is charging $6500.00 for the same specs and only 0.1 larger than the $6300 diamond at the jewelers than this vendor charging around the same price.

That's an increase of 13% carat weight. And different pricing structures for something near 1.10 and something near 1.25.

And GIA>EGL by quite a lot. Maybe another 10%. So you're down 23% already.

Yes. I see, thanks. Perhaps comparing apples and pears, though. The diamond at the jewelers is graded 2A. I could ask for the grading report on the one 1.2 at good old boys. Perhaps it may be 1A or B? Perhaps not. I am not entirely convinced I need to pay 10% more for GIA. I have seen GIA ovals that were inferior visually to EGL, with the same specs , and priced higher.

So...... the real value/ price should be $4800..( -23% ) if all else is equal. I have not been able to find any ovals with 2A grading and "like" specs under $5000..
