HELP! S/T DIAMOND VALUE AND THOUGHTS!

I am looking at the following stone, which is listed as an M but I just found out it's a yellow (not brown) S/T according to the GIA report, VS1 EEE. I am VERY pale, my last stone was a D VS1 and its lack of color was completely lost due to MY lack of color! I like yellow stones but I haven't ever seen one that isn't a fancy yellow. I also cannot find any information on what this stone would appraise for and I don't want to overpay! Does anyone have thoughts on value or pics? Is $15k an okay price for a 3.5ct? I have seen the video and it's a clear stone with typical inclusions for a VS1. No red flags.

Thanks so much, it's impossible to find relevant information on Google!

Marked as sold. Did you buy it? With a 30 day return you can always return it if it’s not as you expect.

I can't see the certificate because it's marked sold, so can't see any of the values we would want to know whether the stone is well cut. It's a 60/60 style, which is fine as long as you know that's what you want (vs. a more "traditionally" ideal stone).

Thanks for your replies, it's on hold for me but I haven't bought it yet. I think I attached the GIA report correctly so you can see the dimensions, main info is:

Shape and Cutting Style - Round Brilliant
Measurements - 9.77 - 9.82 x 5.93 mm
Carat Weight - 3.50 carat
Color Grade - S to T Range
Clarity Grade - VS1
Cut Grade - Excellent
Polish - Excellent
Symmetry - Excellent
Fluorescence - Medium Blue
Comments: Clouds are not shown. Pinpoints are not shown.

Which is it, there is a fairly large price difference between M and s/t?

The HCA score is exactly 2, which is right on the border of what we would consider acceptable. Can you see any advanced images?

Also, I am a little worried about "S-T range". Why doesn't it just give a color? Seems odd.

It is an S/T - I think I read that GIA doesn't have two separate color grades - one for S and one for T? They made a mistake listing it as an M. I don't have a still photo, only a short video. It looks clear, light yellow with just the inclusions noted in the report. Is $15k an appropriate price?

We just don't have enough info to tell. Can you upload the video to youtube or something and then post it?

Not odd. All color grades between O and Z are given as a two-letter range (O-P, Q-R, S-T,..., Y-Z). I guess GIA decided that there doesn't need to be 23 individual color grades from colorless to FLY, but using up all of the letters of the alphabet from D to Z just looked nicer haha.

@durfita: It looks promising from the report alone. A nice 60/60 style diamond. But, as @lovedogs said, it's really hard to give an opinion without even so much as a photo. Can you upload the video?

Hard to tell what price is appropriate in this range, as stones in this color range are not often listed on the internet. The price does seem fair though for the size.

Diamonds by Lauren is one of the few vendors who specialize in these "end of the alphabet" stones, so they would be a good place to look for comparison purposes. In that size range, this stone (4 carat U-V radiant) sold for $23k:

And this 3 carat U-V pear is currently listed at $18.5k:

So I think $15k for the diamond you're considering sounds reasonable as long as it looks good to your eyes. :)

I wondered about this as well when I went to look at it. I think the issue is actually a limitation of the vendor’s platform. Their diamond search scale only goes ‘down’ to M, so I guess anything graded an M or lower will - in their details/description - just default to an M. That could be a good or bad thing for the vendor and customer ... either way, it’s misleading. But if someone was looking for a diamond lower than M, they might say “well, guess they don’t have any, let me pop over to XYZ vendor who does.” Translation: potential sale is lost.

Can you post the video?

Impossible to have an opinion without seeing it. It could be fine and it could be a disaster in terms of color or cut. The price is fine if it is a great cut stone with a pure light yellow tint. But stones in that color range only look good, in my opinion, with a white diamond halo which will make the color look more yellow. I have an O and a Y-Z stone and both are set in halos.

The numbers work its one of the sweet spots for 60/60 style diamonds even with the gia rounding.
With reasonable cutting quality and decent optical symmetry and no tricks in the cutting it has a high possibility of being nice.

Agree about the color. Diamonds in this range are a hit or miss. Some can really look like a beautiful, bright Fancy Light Yellow, some look closer to the colorless end of the spectrum (think off-white), while still others can be a dark and murky yellow. Really need to see how the stone looks in a rotating video and, more importantly, in person, to make a judgement.

All, thank you SO MUCH for your input. I cannot tell you what it means to me, we lost everything in the Paradise CA fires and it's been a long road. To once be surrounded by a lifetime of mementos that are now ashes on an abandoned street is heartbreaking, I am hoping this will be one lovely family heirloom that I can pass down to my daughter.

I uploaded the video to YouTube:

Happy Friday!!

@durfita I am so sorry about your loss related to the fires; that is unimaginable! :(2

Might you just paste the link to the YT video? It’s not working (for me at least) embedded to your message. :wavey:

It says video unavailable :(

I think you need to make it public. If you have the video listed as private then the link won't work for us.

My IT guys would call this an OE "OPERATOR ERROR"!!! I forgot to click publish on Youtube, it should work now! I swear my blonde is fake.

Now we can see it ... FWIW, I rather like the color!

Also, funny you said that about your IT guys; mine call it an “I-D-10-T” error, which if you remove the hyphens, is kinda obvious, but they only speak it (eye tea ten tea) so it’s more incognito. :mrgreen2:

It does work for me now! I am terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your home. I hope this new ring will be the start of new memories for you!

I think it looks good! The cut looks good but not quite like an ideal cut. The yellow is very nice! I do think it will need a frame around it such as a micropave halo (like Victor Canera does) or something like mine which I will post below. My stone is O color.

My stone is on the bottom right. You can see how light yellow it is.

But after setting it, you can see how much more yellow it looks! (The stone below it is I color.)

Looks great to me! Love that color. Of course you'll need to see it in person to be sure, but I think this could be a winner!

The video makes me feel much better. I like it a lot and think it's worth seeing in person as long as the return policy is good.

OMG YOU GUYS ARE THE BESSSSSSSST!!! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy days to help me. diamondseeker2006, I am dying for that O! It is lovely, I hope mine is as pretty. Let's hear it for 30-day returns. :)
Have a great weekend, everyone!!

Opinions on yellow gold or platinum settings? I can't find pics for any rings with stones N - Z. I prefer a platinum ring but I would like to emphasize the yellow of the stone. I love the hidden halos!! Gold or silver? Can't do rose gold, I am to pasty to get away with that. :)

HI all!!
It's important to remember that the Fluorescence may very well have a huge impact on the perceived color of an S-T with Medium Blue. This is particularly true with a round diamond.
There are stones which photograph quite yellow in a light box, but lose pretty much all the yellow in "normal" room lighting.

But you'll be in the best position to judge once you see it @durfita
Good luck!!

Platinum shank with yellow gold bezel and undergallery. :)

For setting ideas, once again turn to Diamonds By Lauren (@Rockdiamond already posted in here). His bench has mastered the art of taking "end of the alphabet" stones and bringing out the yellow. Look through his finished rings with S-T/U-V/W-X/Y-Z center stones to see what he does with them. Most are platinum outer halos with high color (E-F) halo stones, with the center being set with yellow gold prongs/bezel. There's usually also a fairly solid undergallery in yellow gold to bring out even more color. IMO this is the type of setting that would bring out the most color in your stone:
