Hello Everyone!

Executive Summary:

  • First off, thank you for this incredible resource! I have learned so much since getting engaged two months ago!
  • We currently live in the Marshall Islands where there is no jewelry stores. Nearest jewelry store is 2,500 miles away in Hawaii.
  • The shell he proposed with walked away.
  • After months of online research I am thinking of buying used diamonds and resetting them.
  • I found one private seller wedding set that has the quality of diamonds that I want, but I am unsure what is a fair asking price.
  • There is also a pretty big difference between the Appraisal she is showing and the known purchase price.
  • Can you please help me confirm that these are a good buy and that I am making a fair offer?

Stats of what we have been looking for:(In order of preference)
  • 3 Stone setting in platinum
  • 1-1.25c Center Stone VS Clarity or eye clean SI1 H or better color, Ideal/TripleEx <2.0 HCA
  • .30-.50 Side stones SI1 or better clarity Matching color with center stone Ideal/TripleEx <2.0 HCA
  • Small channel set round brilliants down the side of the shank
  • Milgrain detail
  • <$12,000 for engagement and wedding band

The rings that I found include the engagement and wedding. It seems to have just what I was looking for, other than the setting, which I am thinking I could change out once I am back in the States for the holidays. I have found one I like online and when I emailed the store they said they could make it custom for me in 5-7 days, and it would cost $1850 + 9% tax.

Can you please offer your opinions/thoughts on this buy? Thank you in advance!

The Long Story:

First off, I want to thank everyone here for the incredible wealth of knowledge you all provide. I have learned so much in the past two months of my engagement here!!

I have been "lurking" for the past two months since my Fiance proposed to me on September 1st. We currently live in the Marshall Islands where he is building a church and I am working with a humanitarian organization. That being said, the nearest Jeweler is in Hawaii, roughly 2,500 miles away.

He initially proposed with a pretty shell he found on the beach, only to have it walk away later (It was inhabited, so I try to tell him he gave me an engagement Hermit crab, not a shell!)

I have been diligently researching online looking at Brian Gavin, James Allen, Costco, IDoNowIDont.com, etc looking for rings and diamonds. My first job in High School was working in my small town jewelry store and I wish I would have paid more attention to what kind of ring I would have wanted then. I remember always advising G/H colored stones and not buying more than you can afford when it comes to clarity.

My Fiance has much more expensive tastes and expectations when it comes to a ring. I am okay with buying a second hand ring as, it seems many stones are recirculated through retail when bought anyways. I always loved the estate pieces that came through the jewelry store when I worked there.

I found a ring online from a Private seller that seems to meet all the requirements I was looking for in stones, but have to overcome the "buying second hand stigma" with some of my family and to a certain extent my Fiance. He really wants to spent much more on this ring than I am comfortable with, so I am looking for ways to cut costs. Second hand stones seems like the way to go.

If you can please take a look at the specs and let me know if you think they are a good buy, and what would be a reasonable and fair offer price, it would be much appreciated. I am a bit wearing since it is such a big purchase online, and there seems to be big discrepancies between the appraisal and the known retail price. All of the details in my analysis has come from various sources online from my research (I have confirmed the retail costs with the website where they initially purchased the rings BlueNile), however, I don't have anything to compare them to or anyone to ask. I have made an educated guess on offer price, but I worry that it is not appropriate.

Any advice or feedback would be much appreciated!!

Kommoltata! (Marshallese for "Thank you very much!")

:) Charlotte

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

My ring is similar to yours but in yg and 1.21 H Si1 center. Sides are .42 I VS1 all Ideal. Appraisal is $12,500. Your color is higher but smaller center, sides similar but higher color and clarity. And platinum. Given the similarities I would estimate yours maybe 3-5000 higher? For color and platinum. I
So maybe 15-17000? Used I would offer maybe 50-60 %. I also have 5 stone band, yg, 1 cttw but lower color and clarity, replacement value $1600? Your would be much higher. Maybe $2500? Again used I would offer 50-60%.

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

I realize the stats on the stone are a bit hard to see on my attachment, so I will repost here:

3 Stone Engagement
.94 GIA VS1 H Color Ideal EX EX EX None 6.22 - 6.25x3.91 62.7% 55.0% 34.5 41 None 1.9HCA EX VG VG VG
.40 GIA VS1 H Color Ideal H&F EX EX EX None 4.70 - 4.74x2.94 62.3% 54.0% 35.5 40.6 None 1.4 EX EX EX VG
.403 AGSL VS1 H Color Ideal Ideal 0N/A N/A Negligible 4.67 - 4.73 x 2.97mm 63.0% 52.6% 34.9 40.7 Pointed 1.5 EX EX EX Good

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

I was thinking of making an initial offer of 66% of retail cost which would be $9,000 for both rings.

From what I understand, she would likely get about 50% from selling back to a jeweler (Maybe less?) and so I was trying to pad it somewhat.

Again, likely hard to see but here are the numbers I was running:

Retail Purchase Price $13,500.00
Asking Price 88% of retail price $12,000.00
Jeweler Buyback (50%) $6,750.00
55% of original price $7,425.00
65% of original Price $8,775.00
75% of original price $10,125.00

Initial Offer Price? 66% of retail price $9,000.00
Max Offer 74% of retail price $10,000.00
Cost of new platinum Setting $2,016.50

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

Ahh, so color is nearly the same as mine, center is smaller, clarity of center one grade higher, platinum. I would guess we would be very close in replacement value. I would start at lower price, 55-60 % and work from there.

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

Thank you very much for your insight, April!!

Can anyone comment on the big difference between the ratings in the appraisal and the actual GIA certs? Seems like a big color and quality jump.

Thanks again in advance!

It's really hard to accurately grade while the stones are still mounted.

Hi, it is VERY common for stores that sell items to get the colour and clarity of their products wrong so they overestimate the colour and the clarity on valuations or certificates they create in order to sell products for higher prices, so it could have come from the store the seller initially purchased it from. Alternatively many people that write valuations do not grade as strictly as GIA and some of the respected appraisers who are listed on P/S. Insurance valuations are generally inflated values as well.

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

HI:

Yes to all the other erudite comments made by PS'ers about possible grade and value inflation. If you wish to buy on the secondary market, might we recommend a trusted Estate vendor with a return policy??? Many rings sold to Estate vendors come with original lab certifications (GIS or AGS).

May we point you in that direction?

cheers--Sharon

Sharon:

I would be open to any and all recommendations at this point.

I am feeling very overwhelmed by the whole process to be honest. I've done my best to do my due diligence, but I am okay admitting that I sometimes just don't know what I don't know.

I would appreciate any and all recommendations.

Thank you so much!!

Re: Help Requested: Couple on tiny Pacific atoll buying rin

HI:

It is easy to become overwhelmed! Are you under a time "crunch"?

I will look this weekend and see what I can find. I am sure others here will also. Feel free to say "no" to any of the options presented, as it is rather unlikely that the "set" you posted/liked will be duplicated, exactly, elsewhere on the secondary or Estate market. At least with the vendors I will forward, have return policies; albeit mailing back and forth would be challenging given your location!

cheers--Sharon
