HELP! Quick thoughts on this GIA cert needed. Buying today!

Hi everyone!

Any problems with this stone before I move forward and purchase it!? Buying today or tomorrow perhaps.

I am expecting eye clean given the VS2. I will bring an idealscope, and give that a shot, but my competence in using it is pretty minimal. I don't have much experience looking at ideal diamonds, so I am relying on the numbers here rather than my experience.

Any things I should keep in mind when I see it in person, based on these numbers?

Also, if you don't mind, I would appreciate a rough estimate of how much you think it is worth. Based on the search engine on this site, it seems to be worth about 8000USD?

It get's a 1.3 on the HCA so that is good. However I just couldn't pay 8k for a 1.18ct. If you dropped down to SI1 that is eye clean then it would be closer to 4-5k which I could stomach for a 1.18ct-ish. Too each their own but I don't personally care if I can see inclusions with a 30x vs. a 10x loup. As long as it is eye clean I'm happy so I would drop down and save yourself some serious cash.

1. I may be mistaken, but it seems like an SI1 is still at least 6000$, is it not? According to the search engine on this website, anyway.

2. I won't be paying 8000$, but rather am aiming for 7000-7500$. This may seem like a lot, but I have given this quite a bit of consideration. Most places I would buy a stone would lead to 15% tax, which means I will end up paying 7500$ for a 6500$ diamond. So, while an SI1 might be cheaper without tax (e.g., 6500$ + tax), spending 7500$ in this case will cost the same, and get me a VS2 and G.

Thoughts???

Where are you located that you are paying 15% tax.

I am in Canada, so provincial tax is mandatory. If I buy in USD, then its another 6% on top of that too, so it really adds up...

SI2, I thought that was a bit risky for going eye clean? I was debating on SI1, but SI2 seems a bit risky, no?

If you work with an honest vendor they will tell you if it is eye clean or not. SI2 is generally accepted on PS and we recommend it to ppl who are looking to save money or just want to get more bang for their buck.

All in, buying an SI2 G for, lets say, 6000$, will lead to approximately 7000$ with exchange rate and tax. This is about the same as the VS2/G I am discussing above. Is the VS2/G not a better deal for the same price?

If you want to spend $7000-7500, then won't the $8000 stone in question be considerably more than that with the 15% tax?? (maybe I'm missing something?)

I'm with SB... I'd snag an eyeclean SI stone and either save money (or if it were me buying... GET A BIGGER DIAMOND).

The numbers look good and the price sounds ok to me. Why would an SI1 end up costing more? If you have to pay the tax either way, you should still save money, right? I would go to SI1, personally. SI2 can be eye clean, but most of the good ones are bought up immediately. The only "good" inclusion in an SI2 is twinning wisps. It also depends on your definition of eye clean. Normal viewing distance is ~12 inches, and most vendors use that definition, AFAIK. I prefer a stone to be eye clean from 6 inches. May I ask why there is such a rush?

In essence, the stone seems to be "worth" about 8000$ in retail. Guy is asking 7500$. I think that is high for a private sale, but he likely won't budge much. The issue is that I think 15% saved on the private sale might make this a good bargain for the stone.

I got a VS1 1.19ct J OEC for $2500. That was a bargin! Unless you are in a rush I would keep looking. Besides most PS vendors do a PS discount. It's your money so you do whatever you want but I think you can do better.

Ahh. I see. That does seem a little high for a private sale. How long has he/she owned the diamond? When was it certed? Has it been re-appraised? Is there any damage? I'd offer him 6000, which is 75% of retail. That gives you a little room to negotiate. If it's in good condition and has a recent appraisal/cert, it's definitely worth it. If he wants more, I would condition the sale based on a new appraisal.

ETA: is the diamond a MRB? That makes a big difference in price.

I am not in a huge rush, but I have been looking for months and this seemed like a good deal. I admit I am not extremely knowledgeable on the actual process of buying a diamond, so I am happy to consider other avenues.

I am VERY welcome to be proved wrong here. Perhaps we can do a bit of an experiment? Can you find me an eye-clean G/H 1.15-1.3 carat round diamond with near-perfect proportions for 6200$?

The diamond was certed in 2007. Is that too old?

I will have the diamond re-appraised prior to purchasing of course. Unfortunately, I offered 5500$ and then 6500$ without any luck. I am hoping for 7000$, but 7500$ might be the lowest.

Start a new thread. There are many excellent diamonds hunters on PS. List your requirements and price. But only do it if you are serious. The posters on here don't get paid and they are using their private time to help you look. I don't think all would help you search for an "experiement" but if you are serious in finding something at a better price point it can always be done.

What is an MRB? The stone is round brilliant. Is that what you meant?

MRB is modern round brillant but there are other round stones such as OMC's and OEC's. What does the GIA report say it is?

Is this different from MODERN Round Brilliant?

For $7000-7500, I would rather by from a PS vendor with an upgrade/return policy. That's way too much to ask for a private sale diamond certed 6 years ago.

For the same price, would it not simply be better to get VS2 and G? What do I stand to lose from buying privately? Also, these SI1s are not guaranteed to be eye clean, and might very well not be. I only see a handful in the search engine.

Well I know her very well and she is traditional and such and I REALLY really do not see it coming. If she wants an upgrade, we can buy one in the future (I expect finances will not be an issue in the future, lets not get into that), but I see no need to expect it now. I think there is less than 5% chance she will want to change the diamond. She is very sentimental about these types of things and that will be HER stone forever.

Still open to more feedback. I am searching on various websites and am not finding much to suggest I can get what I am looking for for 6200$ or so. Is the age of the cert a problem, even if I get a new one?

SB621, has your opinion changed given that this is a round brilliant stone?

This is the typical round/brilliant stone usually talked about on this board, right? GIA says "round brilliant", and there is only one type of round/brilliant, correct?

Does the age of the cert matter if I get it certed again?

As for price, I think it is a tossup as far as I can tell. Seems hard to find an eye-clean 1.2ct G/H perfectly cut stone for 6300$.

Thank you for the confidence boost, although I am like a child with that idealscope lol. I will give it a shot tonight when I meet with him, but certainly won't be buying it tonight.

More feedback is very VERY much welcome right now. I perceive this as a good deal, but all of the feedback in this thread makes me question it.

As JulieN said, the numbers are good. The age of the cert isn't a problem, necessarily. The problem comes in when you combine the age with a private sale. A lot can happen in 6 years. As long as it's appraised by a trusted independent appraiser before purchase and everything checks out, the date of the cert doesn't really matter. I agree that upgrade policies are not that big of a deal to some people, but returns usually are. I just can't see paying close to retail for a diamond that can't be returned. Still, if you see it and are confident that it's the one, go for it. When using the IS, try to get it as centered as possible. I've never used one personally (only ASET), but I think it's hard to interpret without proper lighting. Could be wrong, though. Do you have a loupe?

I don't have a loupe,but since it is VS2 I expect it will be completely eye clean anyway. The person certifying the diamond will surely have one

I meant more for looking for chips, but if you get it certed before buying, they will use a microscope.
