I’m excited and nervous to say that I’m looking for a diamond for an engagement ring(!) That said I’m having a terrible time deciding on which diamond to buy. After reading up on the materials offered on the site and seeing some of the amazing advice people have posted, I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys before taking the plunge.

I’m thinking about a diamond that is:
Excellent cut
1.7 Ct
SI1 (Eye clean) - VS2
Color doesn’t matter too much
Hopefully around/under 9k

I’ve been looking around on rarecarat and Whiteflash and have seen some candidates but being as I’m not too confident I figured I’d wait to see if anyone had any suggestions. Let me know if my expectations are unrealistic or my selection could be much improved with some changes. I’m sure I sound like a broken record but I cannot understate how much I appreciate any and all advice and wish I knew about diamonds the way this board does.

Thank you!:D

It'll be hard to get up to 1.7 with 9K, but not impossible. Have you had your GF try on rings or look at diamonds? I love the stone that @HappyNewLife posted, but I worry about color if you don't explicitly know her color preferences/tolerance. ACAs from WF will face up whiter, but a K won't be totally "white" to someone who is looking carefully or from the side. Some people are super color sensitive, so it would help a lot to have those parameters.

I like the one posted too! I think the color preference should be ok, although we haven’t explicitly talked about color but if the main concern is from the side that should work. I’m planning to put it in a French Pave style with some diamonds embedded around it, do you think that would make the color matter anymore or less?

Also the ring will be gold, will that cloak the color some?

As in yellow gold?

Most people tend to think you can go lower in color with yellow gold. Others think that it reflects the yellow color in the stone. Pick a setting that
covers up the gallery area (area under the stone) and you wont see much of the profile. That super Ideal ACA is nice!

Yes yellow gold, I had seen that it helps but didn’t know if that’s true. I can’t say enough how much I appreciate the help!

Thanks everyone, I went for it! I cannot say how much I appreciate the help. I know you guys do this everyday but for me, a first time buyer, it was a life saver. :)
