My name is Ann and I am new to this website,

I am asking for anyone''s advice on my engagement ring.

My fiance has not picked up the ring yet because he wanted me to help him choose.

The honest truth is that I do not know too much about diamonds! Help!

I am undecided about gold or platnum or white gold.

I am slowly learning about wedding sets and what I want.

My girlfriend told me about this site.

I am just asking for other peoples advice and experiences to help build my perfect ring.

Thanks.

Ann

Hi Ann and welcome!
35.gif
It''s great that you found this site before making the big purchase. You will hopefully now get a lot more of a quality and beautiful diamond for your money.

I would read the tutorials on this site, and also on some of the vendors sites, like goodoldgold.com amd whiteflash.com to get an idea of the basics.

Then I would hit the jewelry stores and try things on! All different shapes and sizes and types of gold and platinum to get an idea of what looks good on your finger. The first thing to decide is really what shape stone you like, round or, princess or step-cut like emerald cut and asschers. Also have a look at the Forum Engagement ring Folder/Eye Candy thread at the top of the ''Show Me the Ring'' thread. That will keep you busy for a few days!

Then I guess come back here with lots more questions!

Good luck and enjoy the process!

I am completely into A.Jaffe right now (wonder why). I believe Pearlmans carrys the Jaffe line and there are SO many options.

Welcome Anne!

angeline has given you great advice, I say ditto to all!

Ok guys I have looked around and I like a deep cut diamond I like the round, princess, the asscher the radiant and the cushion.

I love rings that sparkle, the ones you can see across the room.

I prefer big, I am not sure if our budget will cover a large stone.

I do like quality, I would prefer a good stone to large stone.

What do you guys think?

Ann

Well, I think you need to decide on ONE stone first. lol We can''t tell you what to get.

And I''m not sure what you mean by "deep cut stones", as you don''t want a deep round, or any other stone TOO deep, although fancies generally run deeper than rounds.

Did you try all these on? And if so, did you like the look of all of them on you?

One thing is for sure, an Asscher will not come close to giving you bang for your buck. They face up much smaller than their ct. weight. So I''d maybe save that for down the road, if you''re wanting a bigger stone.

One thing that helped me narrow down the search (other than trying on LOTS of rings) was the Blue Nile website. They have a feature where you can choose a setting and then put an image of any size/shape diamond in the center. Shaneco.com has a similar feature. It just helps to visualize what the rings will look like with different center stones. I wouldn''t necessarily buy from either of those sites, but they are good resources.

One other thing that was helpful was finding the website for my local high-end jeweler. They listed all the designers that they carry, then I went to each of the designers websites to view their complete collection. Very few jewelers have space to carry everything, so the websites are sometimes the only place to see all the pieces.

Good luck and happy hunting!

If you want to see a stone from across the room, I think that a round is your best bet. LOTS of sparkle. I''m not sure technically which gives the most light return of all shapes, but I''m betting it''s the round.

Welcome to PS!!!

Make SURE you go out and try on lots and lots of rings. I really really like some diamond shapes on other people tha look BAD on my hands. You must know what shape looks good on you.

Now cushions tend to be smaller than a RB of the same Ct weight. But Rectangular cushions can "face up" large for their Ct weight.

Ditto Asschers "facing up" small for their Ct. weight.

If a RB looks good on you they have alot of sparkle and the cut has almost been standardized so they are easier to buy.

Ok, guys I tried on some rings at Kay Jewelrs, it is not where I want to buy my ring but I have more of an idea of what I want.
Thanks so much for your help so far.
I like the round cut ring, it does sparkle more and it looks very pretty and feminine on my fingers.
I do not have a clue what type of setting I want and where to go to get my ring.
Does anyone have some suggestions for me, I really would like a ring from a specialty jeweler.
Also any recfomendations on the carat size, I want it to shine across the room, but not be gaudy.

What the budget for the TOTAL ring. Also give us ideas on types of settings you like. Classic solitares? Rings with side stones? Antique? Modern?

Then we''ll go from there.

My budget for the ring is around $10,000, it would be great to spend less than more.

I really like authentic bands.

I have been looking at a lot of websites that have bands that look the same.

I really want something that is unlike anything else, an original.

I want my ring to be very special and different, I do not want it to be just like all of my girlfriends rings.

I have heard that it is the band that differentiates one jewler from another.

Any suggestions?

P.S. Thank you to those who have been helping me. This is very important to me and I am appreciative of all of your imput and suggesions.

By any chance is your fiancee named Donnie? You too have very similar typing style on here! Good luck with your search. I know you said you wanted different, but do you like bold and modern different? Or something with an antique look?

What size are your fingers? Your finger size could also help you determine what size of stone to get (along with your budget
1.gif
), and depending on what kind of finger coverage you''d like. I know people have posted a finger coverage chart here somewhere, if you''re interested you could do a search for it.

Ok, thanks for the chart and the information.
I am a size 6.
I was thinking maybe a circle cut diamond and then that leaves the band again.
I know I dont want a plain platnum band.
I do want platnum because I know it is more durable.
I am postulating diamonds in the band, or some king of intricate design.
I saw some beautiful bands on Michael Beaudry''s website.
Anyways, thanks again for your advice, I am going to search the internet again to look at more possibiliites.

ann, you might want to check out Pearlmans website if you haven''t already done so. he has a huge selection of designer settings including beaudry and you might see something there that is what your are after.

If you like Beaudry, I have two other nice suggestions for you. But be prepared that platinum settings with diamonds are expensive, and the setting may take a good percentage of your budget. Still, these are two very special custom ring designers and both less than Beaudry (probably):

Leon Mege http://www.artofplatinum.com/

Maytal Hannah http://www.maytalhannah.com/

Ok, I have taken you advice mrssalvo and I went to the Pearlmans website and I loved what I saw. I really liked Michael B. and his selection.
Due to one of his rings I may want to go with the 3 row band. I really like that look.
I love the princess cut rings, I see why they call them princess cut.
I also took diamondseeker 2006''s advice and went to the art of platnum website and it is just beautiful! I really like their slection.
I love the handmanship.
I really like the ring r890, except I wish the band had three rows. It is a beautiful ring though!
I really like the Maytall Hannah line. I love these rings, they are really beautiful.
I really like ring # 100. It is amazing!
I also really like Michael Beaudry''s couture collection. I love style 203913 also style 204790.
I am going to visit some stores and look at the collections in person.
My grilfriend and I are going to Studio City, CA this weekend to visit Michael B. If anyone has any other suggestions on jewlrey stores in the area please let me know.
Thanks.

Any other stores we should visit? Anyone?

If you like the old vintage look, call Single Stone and make an appt to go see their selection, but they have vintage stones...

I went to Studio City this weekend with my girlfriend to look at rings. I started at Michael B''s and I really did like their selection.
These rings are very expensive, but I am willing to raise my budget. I want my ring to be perfect.
I really like the Riviera Collection and also the princess collection.
I am really considering a ring from Michael B.
I also went down the block a couple of doors to a jewelry store called Michael Barin.
Wow, I love their rings!
The Br12 in the Bidal Collection is just unreal. Also I loved the Br18b in the bridal collection.
I am going to have to decide what it is that I really want.
What do you guys think? Which ring do you like best?

I drool all over the place when I see Michael B rings. What size center are you thinking of? If you are wanting something a bit different I think the Riviera would look amazing! All those sparkles!! I would faint. If you''re getting a biggish center the Princess looks amazing too when you have the big rock hanging on the tiny, thin sparkly band. I couldn''t choose, they''re both so gorgeous!

Please keep on updating us, I''m enjoying this

Hello everyone,

I still need more help with my wedding ring.
I have posted two links above of the bands I am deciding over.
Let me know what you guys think is the best choice.
Thank you.

Ann, the Michaal Barin with side baguettes is a very classic style. I love it (but prefer a round diamond). I think it''s hard to go wrong with Michael B, but I really like the Princess line more than the other. Vatche makes a baguette setting that is really pretty and may cost less than the MBarin one. Assherisme actually has that setting with a round center stone. When I have time, I''ll look for a picture for you.

Hey Everyone, I finally got my ring!
My fiance surprised me with the stone. He purchased a one carat VS2 diamond from Blue Nile and left the rest up to me.
I went back to Michael B and looked at their collection again. I just did not have one jump at me.
You know that moment when one says, it's me.
So again I went three doors sown to Michael Barin and I found my ring. It is French Pave and it has .86 carats.
Oh, my gosh it just jumped out at me!
They really helped me choose the ring and I am so excited!
I have posted photos for everyone to see.
