Help me with my upgrade decision

I found this diamond on Blue nile which has the following specifications.
Carat - 2.06
Measurements - 8.20 - 8.23 X 4.99
Color - G
Clarity - VVS2
Cut/Symmetry/Polish - Excellent
Table - 59
Crown Angle - 35
Pavillion angle - 40.8

HCA scores are 1.7 but am still not sure if this is a good buy? I am upgrading from a 1.31 carat to 2.06 if things look good. Also, if I upgrade, I am not able to visualize how much bigger the new one will be?

Many people can see size differences at about 0.2 mm (side by side). This will be more than a 1.0 mm size difference, which almost anyone would notice from afar.

That’s a large upgrade in size. You will definitely see a difference.

What is the depth on the 2 carat stone?
I’m wondering if this is close to a 60/60 stone.

What is the mm size of your current stone? There could be a huge jump depending on the spread of your stone, The one you are considering for upgrade is a very "spready" stone.
But even if all things are equal, and just by carat weight alone, you will definitely see a difference in size. There is a website that will show you size difference specially via actual measurements: https://www.diamdb.com/
This is an awesome tool but you will need the measurements of your current stone for an accurate image.

I love 60/60 stones, personally. But, they are a different thing that the super-ideal high powered fire stones out there. What are the proportions of your current stone?

Have you seen this stone in person? WIll you have a return period once you get it? Can you get an ASET on this new stone to check for light return? It is harder to judge a 60/60 by just the numbers.

We don't know the exact measurements of your 1.31 but using DiamDB we can see a generic 1.31 and generic 2.06 has approx 1.10mm difference in size.

This will be a noticeable and appreciable size difference.




Additionally I would warn you to get an idealscope or ASET image of the new stone.

Remember the HCA tool is for rejection purposes only so you can narrow the field to potentially acceptable candidates. A good HCA score is a good starting point, but not necessarily a guarantee the stone performs well.

The actual cut and symmetry properties of any stone will further determine if the proportions noted on the cert truly work. The ASET or IS helps us confirm that aspect. A hearts image would help us confirm symmetry.

I mention this because while a 35/40.8 can certainly work out I see enough bad ASET and IS images on that particular combo that I consider it a risky purchase. Add to it a large 59 table and 60.7 depth which is very close to a 60/60 style stone and it puts more concern in my head. Those images would help alleviate those concerns, or potentially confirm them.

The problem is I don't believe BN offers advanced imagery. So if you move forward with the purchase I'd encourage you to buy your own scopes, have the stone shipped loose for inspection and verify with your scopes the light performance and symmetry. If it meets, then great. Move forward. If not, return and start over.

You'd have to be blind not to see the size difference .

Do ask BN if they can provide an idealscope or aset image.

Thank you all but they do not have the idealscope or aset image of the diamond. They have put in a request to see if they can ask the supplier to provide us that information.

Can you explain what concern you see with the proportions I provided. I would like to research in the mean time Blue Nile provides me with the images.

MM size of my current stone is 6.99-7.04 X 4.32

No I have not seen the stone in person, just the 360 degree image of the stone. And yes I have a 30 day return policy if I don't like things.

Blue Nile just got to me saying they don't have any other pics of the stone. Now what do I do?

You have to decide if it's worth the risk for you to buy it. You have their 30 day policy (read it carefully) and should decide if you are willing to take the chance on either loving the diamond or not. Depending on your situation, you may or may not be willing to waste time or tie up funds in the event that you don't like it. Definitely do as mentioned above and purchase an idealscope and or ASET scope. Are you tied to blue nile for the upgrade? Someone else more experienced could help you find a stone that's less risky if you don't feel up to chancing it.

VVS never sounds like a great deal, but I have not looked for options yet.

Do you already own a diamond from BN and using their upgrade policy or will you be buying a new diamonds? If you are not already committed to Blue Nile, IDJ in New York usually can call most of the stone found on BN and will provide imaging.
