I normally analyze rounds but will offer a few comments on princess until some of those experts can step in and provide additional insight.

Here are some proportion guidelines I found that make sense. Looking at the super ideal princess cuts that WhiteFlash (WF) offer, this seems close:

Since a princess cut is suppose to look square, the length to width ratio is important. Ideally you want to be as close to a perfect 1 as possible; however, as the chart above identifies I think a more reasonable range is 1.00 to 1.02. As your ratios increase, price should drop as the stone will begin to visually appear rectangular at some point which most people don't want when shopping for a princess cut.

To determine range, divide the larger of the length or width by the opposite.
  • Example: 5.29 x 5.31 x 3.88 mm
  • The first two dimensions are your length & width, respectively. The third is your depth.
  • 5.31 / 5.29 = 1.0038 ratio

Next you need to determine how many chevrons you like. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, see below. This is a preference. Less chevrons will have a more chunky look to them when reflecting whereas, a higher number will appear more splintery (or like "crushed ice").

Lastly, it can be very beneficial to review ASET images when looking at fancy shapes, especially online. Generally speaking the more red, the better.

There aren't too many people producing super ideal princess cuts which basically assures you get the best cut (sparkle) available and is certified as a true "ideal" cut by AGS labs. WF is one such vendor and looking at their website they had several stones that fit your budget.

While a slightly more expensive than some of the BN options they appear to be better choices with PROVEN performance metrics to make buying with confidence a little easier IMO.

Okay I will compare the ones I picked to that chart you posted... thanks that is helpful. With the setting and everything I’m trying to stay below 5k so this kind of limits me. I will also compare some of those to the wf and see how they compare. Thanks again... I never knew picking a diamond could be so complicated!!

Brian Gavin Diamonds also has a signature line of princess cuts though their inventory is looking very thin now compared to a few months ago. Maybe they are concentrating on their emeralds, cushions and rounds these days...

Did the intended wearer say, specifically, that they want a princess cut and no other? They are very much a "love or hate" shape and (some) find them rather dates. If they did not say specifically that they wanted one, regroup. ok?

On the face of it, I'm not in love with any of these 4. All have thick girdles that don't provide good spread to weight ratio. I don't really love BN's photography for showing performance, so I looked over on JA.

This looks good. During high sale periods (now), JA has a long history of missing shipping deadlines.

This setting (princess cuts need double prongs or v-prongs, v's are better, but JA has limited options in budget}

But, this is a better diamond with better spread. WF has a much better upgrade policy and makes their shipping deadlines. They may have other options within budget that have v-prongs, just ask them.

Yes she is pretty set on the princess cut. I will check out the ones you posted. And yes I didn’t like that they had thick girdles also.

Would you not be concerned that the diamond you posted from WF isn’t eye clean?

I noticed this too. Keep in mind, the video you are looking at is magnified so any imperfections you see won't be that visible in real life. That said, the WF web page does say "Inquire" under the eye clean section, which typically means it's NOT eye clean.

But here's where WF shines. Call them tomorrow and ask them to pull the stone (as they have it in their vault) and then ask one of their gemologist to inspect it, take additional pictures, videos, etc. and inspect it for how obvious (or barely detectable) the inclusions may be.

I love these types of threads for the detailed analysis of non-rounds. The Princess is particularly fun because it shares so many similarities in cut performance with rounds, but the variables make them less predictable. Great info here so far.
