Didn't I just consider exactly that?
Not quite and because there is a height at the base of the head to factor in where it V’s together.
Let me do more math to see if I can explain this better... my stone is 5.79 deep, the total setting with the head is 8.73, my wedding band is 2. Does that help? There is not gap at my bottom. The reason why it looks like the head cannot be lowered is the cathedral angles too far up, the angle is too steep. The designer should have made a less steep cathedral and then the diamond would fit perfectly snug. This is no different than any other head setting only that the frame outside is a cathedral.
Some people like air gaps, but to me, that is not a custom look. Just my honest opinion.
