Help finding a princess cut engagment solitaire - 3K budget

I am a novice who has been lurking here trying to get educated enough to make an intelligent decision on a princess cut solitaire engagement diamond since I have access to custom settings. I want to make sure that I show my soon to be fiance how much I respect and value her for the lovely person on the inside and want to get her a beautiful diamond.

I have to balance a budget so here's what I've concluded: get top notch cut, increased size, gone down a lot in color and clarity is last. We're both novices so I don't want to overkill anything. With that said I've decided to get an ideal/excellent cut, .8 to .9 size,
H/I color, VS1 and VS2. The Rapaport helped me decide on the size, color, clarity combo. How does the cut affect the pricing?

Am I being realistic because some other threads are way out of my budget? I have started to work with WF and GOG or should I look elsewhere? I gave up on the local jewelers when all they wanted was to sell me overpriced and under performing princess cuts that looked terrible. There are so many variables that it's overwhelming and with all the PGS, ASET, etc data it's overload when you've looked at 20, 30 diamonds at a time. Even the AGS princess ideal cut give you ranges within each variable.

I am a humble man wanting a great diamond for a wonderful person. I know the difference between a want and a need but I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with a great job and a great person to share my life.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Help finding a princess cut engagment solitaire - 3K bud

I'm a little confused. Is the total budget for ring and diamond 3k? Unfortunately, that's a little unrealistic for those stats. Cut is by far the most important factor. It can make a diamond look clearer, brighter, more firey, etc. There is also definitely a premium for cut, but generally it's less than the other 3 C's. I would be more than happy with any AGS 000. The AGS 0 cut range is much tighter than GIA excellent.

Thank you for your reply.

Sorry for not being clear. 3K is for diamond only and I could go to 4K if the quality would go up. Is that more realistic? What should I expect for 4K - the same .8, H/I, VS1/VS2 in an ideal cut. All the research does show that AGS is much tigher the GIA. Will a triple 0 AGS give me peace of mind?

Take care.

That's much more realistic. :) Yes, an AGS 000 should give you plenty peace of mind. Here are some examples.

I would never go lower than a H for princess cut ,remember fancy cuts look yellower face up because of reduced brilliance compared to round brilliant cuts

All,

Thank you for the replies and I have been looking at those WF and GOG diamonds. On the GOG diamond is the crown and cronwn angle are off.

Treasurehunter I know the princess cut is a difficult one to find great optics in the middle (low performance right in the middle) is that the reason for keeping the color a H and above?

Thank you.

you just see the colour more in fancy cuts than rounds

Re: Help finding a princess cut engagment solitaire - 3K bud

If you're trying to optimize carat size, would you consider other square-ish cuts? Princess cuts are notorious for facing up small -- that 0.83 carat posted is 5.16 x 5.33 -- I have a cushion of the same size that is 5.48 x 5.87. Radiants would be another option if you like the splintery look of a princess. I started off the diamond search being dead-set that I wanted a princess, but after trying some on and seeing the small face-up, I started looking at other cuts. Just a suggestion, I'm not trying to sway you either way!

I have not done much research on a radiant cut. What's the difference between a radiant and a princess cut?

Thank you.

EB.. that is a beautiful stone.. I like radiants a lot more than princess after reading this thread.
