Hi Everyone,

I've been looking at the specs on these two RB diamonds and would appreciate some help deciding between the two. I only have the GIA reports to go off of at this time, but plan to have one brought in to see in person.

Neither have fluorescence and both are Canadian (hence the premium price). Any help deciding between specs (given that I want a Canadian diamond and the FI would prefer to have an IF) would be greatly appreciated. My biggest concerns are the J color being too yellow (though I like flashes of color) and which one is the better value for you're getting.

Diamond 1:
Carat Weight: 1.55
Measurements: 7.47x7.49x4.60mm
Color: H
Clarity: IF
Cut/Polish/Symmetry: Ex/Ex/Ex
Table: 54%
Depth: 61.5%
Crown: 34.5 degrees
Pavillion: 40.8 degrees
$19,409

Diamond 2:
Carat Weight: 1.64
Measurements: 7.57x7.61x4.69mm
Color: J
Clarity: IF
Cut/Polish/Symmetry: Ex/Ex/Ex
Table: 56%
Depth: 61.8%
Crown: 34.5 degrees
Pavillion: 40.8 degrees
$14,043

The reason for the high price is the WAY overkill on clarity. You really don't need anything above eyeclean SI1. But even if clarity really mattered to you anything above VS1 is overkill.

I wouldn't pay for either.

I'd go for a nice G-H VS2.

Canadian or otherwise.

Why on earth do you want to pay for something you absolutely cannot see? Go up in color, go down in clarity and don't waste your money on IF. And it IS a waste of money.

You tell anyone who knows diamonds you have a J IF RB their first thought is... wasted money on clarity over color. Honestly, it's just... not something an educated buyer would ever do.

Both diamonds have specs that I would consider quite good on paper. One thing to clarify is that the flashes of color are not related to the actual color of the diamond but rather the combination of angles that show what is called fire. Seeing as though both have decent depths and not massive tables the specs would indicate that there will be good fire (color flashes). As for the actual color of the diamond this is a matter of personal preference, the difference between H and J likely will not be jaw dropping but if may be observable. A few things to keep in mind is that H and J are color ranges and there are good ones (closer to G and I) and poor ones (closer to I and K). The other is that there can be brown or yellow undertones or a mix. I would ask the vendor to give an opinion on how good they are within their respective color grades, and specifically if the J shows a tinge of yellow or brown. It is quite possible that color will only be seen through the side, and it will show very white face up, if you are ok with this then a J is a very good option.

Given a choice, I would choose the H.

Yup!

H over J anyday. If the choice was H or I, I would have to say I'd need to see the I color stone but it would probably be okay. But there will be some tint in a J.

I love the color in a J and choose one for my ering and have since moved on and went lower. My hubby sees no color in a ideal cut RB even when side by side with a colorless diamond, I see it and appreciate the color. Every eye perceives color differently, you have to see what your eye enjoys!

Thanks so much for your input. Canadian and flawless were my and my fiance's choices prior to finding Pricescope. Since I've learned so much from here, I'm definitely open to changing around my requirements (ie. better color/size and not getting an IF), but I figure we should bring in one of our original choices for comparison before making a final decision. I've decided to see the H in person next week.

The diamond will be going into a rose gold solitaire setting with a platinum head. I love the warmth of rose gold, but was on the fence about how much warmth I wanted in the diamond.
