Hi,

I am trying to choose between these 2 diamonds for a client and am well educated when it comes to Round Brilliant Diamonds, not Emerald Cuts. Would appreciate help choosing between these 2.

1. 8.02 Emerald Cut:
https://www.dnav360.com/vision/dna.html?d=148524&ic=1

2. 9.07 Emerald Cut:
https://www.dnav360.com/vision/dna.html?d=165090&ic=1

I tried taking photos with my IDEAL scope but it's hard to capture a good image (attached).

Attached images with the 9.07 on ring finger (left side), and 8.02 on middle finger (right side) with LED light at angle.

@Karl_K

Would appreciate feedback on which diamond is better.

This will be upgraded within a year to natural diamond, but for now would like to make sure it's the best diamond in terms of cut/fire/scintillation.

Thank you :) IMG_3106.PNG

By eye which one did you like best and why?

By eye which one did you like best and why?

8.02 as it has more contrast and looks more polished/glossy/mirror like. But I like the ratio of the 9.07 being 1.4 (vs 1.44) so it takes more finger real estate. Who could I learn from in person about the best but Emerald Cut diamonds? Happy to pay for the education.

Also for those of you who are trade, where do you get natural diamond epaulettes? Found one supplier but they don’t have inventory in larger sizes to match these stones and ones I ordered seem a bit too yellow.

The 9.07 seems with my not very well trained eye as more leaky/white in the middle. Am I observing this correctly?

best cut Emerald Cut diamonds *

@Karl_K They both look pretty leaky to me. What are you seeing?

2min EC test.
1. look at the face up patterns. No large dead zones? Pleasing to you?
2: Hold it over a red or blue item(Pepsi bottle wrapper is perfect) Paying particular attention to the center. Gently rotate. over the short end. Some flashes that quickly go away of red/blue are normal if they are not large and not close to the culet. I kept a business card in my wallet with pepsi wrapper glued to it. One side blue other red. Mylar works well also.
3: Now put it into a ring spring holder and put it on your finger.
Rotate your hand side to side. does it dance?
You should see the light tract across the stone as the small areas turn on and off. If wide area flashes on and off at once its not good. They should be narrow and long across the center not wide and long.
4: repeat 3 in different lighting conditions and different distances from your eyes.

Nether stone is that great but not totally bad either.
Bit to much leakage but in the video both dance well.

Sorry about yesterday I had PT and was in a lot of pain.

How do I post a video on here? It’s only allowing photos. Can I link it from my website if I post there?

Both seem leaky to me in the hand pics, but if I had to choose, left one seems a bit nicer.

When on the ring holder, in both stones, I see the bottom of the ring holder through both stones so for me, that might be a problem (unless all ECs would do that?)

The ideal scope images show exactly what your photos show. If these were colored stones would you keep them or would you send them back due to the window under the table?

Thank you and hope you feel better. Ordered a Pepsi to try. Am I understanding correctly, that if I can see through the middle of stone and see my finger that is essentially leakage? I see through the 8.02 less than the 9.07. ASET scope comes Monday.

Right if you see your finger in the stone that area is drawing light from the pavilion not the top. aka leakage.

I am also looking for a natural diamond for my client to possibly purchase now instead of Lab. In the perfect world for maximum optics, what would the ratio/table/depth/angles be on an Emerald Cut diamond? I see some on rapnet where the depth is smaller than table, is that bad? Does anyone know the the #s of Brian Gavin's Emerald Cuts for larger stones? I sent them an email but I am not sure they will cut for trade at closer to trade pricing.

The numbers dont tell you a lot, 2 stones can have the exact same numbers on the report and one suck and one rock.
In general I target:
l/w ratio is personal preference.
Table 65% or under out to 67% if all else is right.
Crown height 14%+
Depth: under 70% but mid 60% is nice.
Depth does not equal spread so pay attention to the mm measurements. A stone 69% deep could have better spread than one 65% deep.

The depth/table rules are garbage.
65% table 60% depth could rock could suck.
60% table 65% depth could rock could suck.

Angle numbers are not helpful because you change one thing the needed angles change.
Change the corner/windmill size.. angles need too change.
Change facet placement... angles need too change.
So on and so forth every small change changes the needed angles.

What it really comes down to with EC cuts is the test I outlined above then a final verdict by seeing in person over time.

Some links that will help explain things.

Thank you. Is it normal to see the mounting through an emerald cut diamond? I am used to mostly working with round brilliant stones.

At some angles yes and it should go away quickly while tilting.
Face up and mild tilt no for a well cut one to the eye.
Sometimes it will show in pictures but not be noticeable by eye.

Well this temporary 8 ct, which is the best from the 4 lab diamonds, I can see through the center facing up, as can be seen in photos. They came from Labon Diamonds (trade only I believe). Any recommendations for other places to order a lab diamond from that might be better cut?

Actually I put the stone on another ring mounting and could not see the mounting below. I think I was seeing in as was using the spring holder. IMG_3288.jpeg

No diamond expert here and I do love size but the 8.02 carat looks better to my naive eyes.
