Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on this site for quite some time and have admired your rings very much! Thank you for sharing such insightful information with all of us :)

As for me- I have been engaged since October 6th of this year. My DF proposed to me with a beautiful 2ct round brilliant GIA stone (I don't remember the exact specs but can post them later). The original ring that he proposed to me with was set on a plain 14ct band as my fiancé wanted me to choose my own setting. We went to the jeweler a week after the proposal and I selected a platinum pave/micro pave (not sure that I understand the difference yet) setting, with 4 prongs. I should mention that I have never in my life tried on engagement rings, and when I went to reset my ring I showed the jeweler a photo of a ring that I have liked for a long time and she replicated exactly that. However, I was never the type to obsess over rings or look at pictures of them. When the jeweler presented me with the new final product I was not very ecstatic. I feel as though the pave diamonds take away from the main stone, and the color of them seems somewhat dull in comparison to my center stone. Also, I've been thinking lately that a pave band looks best with a halo around the center stone rather than a plain solitaire- do you agree? Additionally, I find myself constantly missing my plain band (on which, in my opinion, the diamond sparkled and stood out much more). But every time that I think I want to reset it back to what it was I second guess myself as I know that this new setting is beautiful and I get lots if compliments on it. Anyhow, my DF and I have made an appointment with our jeweler for this coming Saturday to go look at some other options and potentially reset the ring once again. I can tell that my DF is starting to get frustrated with my indecisiveness, and he had asked me to make an educated decision so that I love my ER and don't feel the need to reset it again for a long time. If you could please advise me on what I should do and what setting to go with I would appreciate it so very much!

What I am considering:
1) going back to a plain solitaire on a very thin band (I like the band to be as thin as possible) in platinum. If I go with this route, do you recommend 4 or 6 prongs to make the stone as pretty as possible and to have it stand out and look as big as possible.
2) sticking with a pave/micropave band but going thinner on the band (something close to gweneth paltrow's band)
3) even though I never considered a halo before I've been obsessing over your pictures of the Victor Canera Emilya ring (specifically Frankieextah's thin halo)

I feel like a plain solitaire is beautiful and very versatile as I can stack different bands with it, but I've always loved the pave/micropave bands, and furthermore feel very bad that my DF spent money on a new setting only for me to go back to the original setting and basically have him throw out his money. I'm in a huge dilemma over this and have only a few days to decide. I really want this to be my final decision and would love any advice/pictures that u could share.

I am going to try to attach some photos right now of my original and current settings.

Thank you in advance!
Happy thanksgiving to all =)

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

Given the information on your preferences, I would probably put it in a gorgeous 6 prong solitaire setting (6 prongs protects the stone better and I feel makes it pop better) and put two micropave bands on either side.

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

I agree with the poster above except I don't like 6 prongs.. I think it makes a stone look smaller.. to each his/her own.. I think resetting in a thinner band with pave diamonds that are equal in bling as your stone will make your ring pop.. when diamonds hit 2 ++ carats there's (to me) a possibility that they start to look 'fake'.. so I truly love the setting where pave is on the prongs of the diamond setting.. I think this setting truly pops the diamond.. although I don't have this setting (yet!) someday I hope to have it though.. your diamond is gorgeous and alone or with pave it's magnificent! congratulations and best wishes.

It really is a matter of personal preference - both versions of your ring are beautiful! If the pave band bothers you, then I would talk to the jeweler about resetting the stone in a six prong mounting and seeing if he would let you trade in the second mounting towards a wedding band or two. I think six prongs make the stone pop and look rounder. I agree with the above poster that six prongs can sometimes make a stone look smaller if the prongs are too large but with a two carat stone, I don't think you'll have that problem.

+1!! And not because that's very similar to how my rings are, but because based on all of the info you provided, that might be a nice compromise - you can have all that you wanted.

Keep us posted and congrats on your wedding!! :appl:

I LOVE a six prong for a 2+ carat MRB. I think it makes the stone look big and round. Go to Victor Canera's website and look at his solitaire settings. The gabriella is gorgeous!! And so you don't waste your DF's $$, have them make the pave setting into a pave eternity that you can stack with your plain shank six prong.

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

I think I see a color difference between the center stone and the pave stones, like the stones in the band are E/F color and the center is I/J or something. Maybe it's just my computer. But I like it better in the solitaire with the metal shank. I think the jeweler could have done a better color-match to the center stone.

I am in the same dilemma, so for now, I paired my e ring with a plain platinum band. I will post a pic so that you can see. Maybe you can wait it out longer, until you find the setting that speaks to you....that is the route that I plan to take to avoid buyer's remorse a second time around.

Wow, braga123, that's beautiful !!!

I think either go with something like braga's set,
or
I really like the original setting
and other posters' idea of wearing it with one or two pave bands :))

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

Thank you so much to everyone for posting your thoughts and suggestions. I think I will go with what majority has said, and choose the plain solitaire setting with 6 prongs. I find this to be the most me... plus it is very classic and versatile as I can pair it with various types of bands.

You have helped me with my decision- thank you!!!!! =)

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

You are most welcome - please come back with pictures once the stone is reset!

I have a 6 prong Victor Canera Gabriella setting that I think is a classic look. I can pair it with a matching spacer or with my VC pave bands. I think you have chosen well!

+1!! mom2boys, I always refer back to your Gabriella setting as the perfect classic band and setting combination. It makes me want to go back to a plain shank at least once a week.

Re: Help choose a new setting ASAP meeting with jeweler this

Just wanted to post an update after our visit to the jeweler yesterday-

I showed the jeweler photos of the VC Gabriella and the classic Tiffany style rings that I like, and she presented me with something very similar options to both. I tried on the rings and my FI was not happy with them at all. Even though he didn't say anything as he wanted me to make my own decision, I could tell by his body language that he was getting upset. He doesn't understand going from bling and diamonds to a plain, more simple and less expensive band. Finally, when I tried on the rings with pave wedding bands (as these are the type of wedding bands that I want), my FI voiced his opinion and said that he didn't like plain band ERs with diamond WBs and that if I go with a plain band on the ER I should go with a plain wedding band in his opinion. Although I disagree with his view on this I could tell that he was going to be upset if I changed my setting to a plain one.

The jeweler cleaned my ring and I no longer see the color discrapincy between the center stone and the pave dimaonds. Also, when I tried on my ER with the stackable pave wedding bands I really loved it. It goes perfectly together and has a very clean and beautiful look. I feel like it fits me very well so I was happy =)

I decided to keep my setting for now, and told my FI that we should consider an upgrade in 5+ years :naughty: At that point I would like to go to a designer such as Victor Canera or someone else that's a master at his work, and reset the diamond in what speak to us then. I think this is a good plan as there is absolutely nothing wrong with my current setting and when I add the stackable wedding bands to it I absolutely love it.

Thank you so much to everyone for your advice on this! I appreciated it!
