Hi I am about to purchase a diamond which has a cavity but I am not sure if it’s a big deal based on its location and that it’s a VS2. But it’s list second on the GIA report second on the list of inclusions and I’m concerned. Not sure if this is a good buy even though it seems to have great sparkle. Please help! Gia #6212068051. Thank you!

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Did you discuss with the vendor? Run it through Rare Carat and you can chat live with a Graduate gemologist free of charge. They are really concerned about clarity.

I don't think a cavity should be a problem in a VS2.

Can you attach a pic of the cert?

Would the location of the cavity matter? I have read some people say stay clear while others say it’s not bad if at least VS2 and based on location. I was so focused on the 4C’s I didn’t even bother to research inclusions.

Just because it received a VS grade doesn’t mean it won’t be a problem... perhaps not as much as one but, again, as I said, why chance it? If dirt will build up inside it over time, you certainly don’t want it to build up on the pavilion which can affect light return (leakage)... unless that would only be a concern for rounds of which I don’t know - perhaps someone can weigh in on this.

Thanks headlight! Maybe someone knows if it’s not as big an issue on a princess cut diamond. Hoping someone else can weigh in.

If I'm reading the cert correctly, the cavity is on the bottom of the stone, which will theoretically be well protected in a setting and not at risk of getting knocked around, etc. I am not a princess expert by any stretch, but for me personally I don't think these inclusions would be a deal breaker.

Great thanks lovedogs!! I appreciate the opinion. Ummm by any chance would you know what a good price for this diamond might be. I don’t want to over pay since my haggling skills are not great. Lol

I really think it’s worth it for you to go to RareCarat.com and enter in your report #. You can then chat live with a Graduate gemologist to get their opinion for free. I think it would be well worth your time.

Do you have photos of the actual stone? I know next to nothing about princess cuts and honestly usually I can't even tell if it's a good stone or not. Sorry I can't be more helpful :(

Here’s a picture. Honestly I went in and picked the one with the most sparkle.. lol but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t have issues with the diamond down the line. I put a deposit down but I’m sure they will let me change the stone but don’t want to go through it again unless theses inclusions are a deal breaker.

It has 2 cavities and one of them is on a corner. (thats what the plot looks like to me)

Edit...Looks like the cheapest for a E/VS2 at BlueNile is about $6500.

I used Rare Carat on MANY stones. They never recommended a stone with a cavity. There were a few other specific clarity issues they would warn against as well. If you decide against this diamond, will they return your deposit?

Well thats a good question. I think thats what I am trying to avoid but I have a feeling they should at least let me choose another one if this one is not a good deal. At least I hope they will. Thats part of the reason I am asking cause if I can't get the deposit I might be stuck with it and for the cost I want to make sure its a good diamond.

LOL, I feel like I'm being baited. @Diamond_Hawk have you seen this yet. :cool2:

I find the plot bizarre for the reason that this stone has a lot of surface reaching inclusions for a VS2. One inclusion seems to reach the girdle. I can generally tell you not to pick a stone with several surface reaching inclusions. I have not seen this diamond so it may or may not pose a risk, possibly not but why buy a stone like this when you can get recommendation here to buy something beautiful without potential problems?
