Good afternoon, forum! I'm new to all of this and have been researching/reading/admiring the topics, rings and diamonds in this community for the last couple of months. I am entering a phase of my life that I'm incredibly excited for; and now I need a ring.

As I've done my research, I've learned so much from your expertise. I think I know what I want to purchase for my girlfriend (with a little input from her), but overtime that I think I'm set to make a decision, I learn more and either second-guess the decisions I thought I'd made or change my mind.

Here's what I'm looking for if you're willing to help: this may get long as I want you to hear (read) out my thought process

I've decided on Victor Canera for the setting and center stone. I (she) want(s) the stone to be a CAC in the 1.0-1.5ct range. My price range was $8-9k for the center stone with the understanding that the setting will be more expensive with VC which I am happy to spend. I'm considering going to $10k for the center stone as I've been comparing other diamonds.

Originally, my gf wanted a Morganite set in rose gold. We have since looked at morganite rings in local stores and they were underwhelming. We've decided on a diamond. She likes the peach-pink of a morganite but didn't have much sparkle/fire for her. So my thought was to do a center stone that was a little warmer (K-ish). There are two on VC's site that are really nice.

https://www.victorcanera.com/diamonds/rrcz7u-1.501-k-vs1-ideal-antique-cushion

I want the ring to look just like this https://www.victorcanera.com/rings/the-emilya-with-cathedral-shank minus the cathedral shank. My concern is that the K may be too different in color as compared to the G-color single cut melee that I'm planning for the ring (Victor doesn't get single cut that is lower color than G - I asked him). In this example, it says in the video that the center stone is an F - even though the center stone looks darker to me than the surrounding melee.

Do I get a smaller center stone in the F,G,H range that may look better in a G melee? I haven't seen any photos of rings that look like that. I'd love to see some if anyone has any. She is a size 5-5.25 ring, so a smaller center stone may still look good I'd imagine. Thanks in advance for any help!

If you are purposely buying a lower coloured stone because you like the warmth it has, then I think a high coloured mele is perfect - it will showcase the difference in colour. Let me look for some photos

Rose gold will make it much harder to differentiate the color of melee vs the center stone

Here is a great example of a low colored antique cushion in rose gold with much whiter melee- the difference is there but is masked a bit. Your stone at a K will blend even more

I don't think you will notice bc the colors that a CAC throw off, in a J, are likely to be multicolor reflections, and the flashes will be big. The melee flashes are different in size and flavor from the flashes from the center stone. I would be a lot more concerned if your center was an MRB, which is way less forgiving with tint. IMHO, an antique cushion shouldn't reflect only white light. Your K will be beautiful in a single cut halo.

I have Victor's single cut melee in the shank and basket of my Jocelyn, and the flashes don't look "white" at all. They are certainly BRIGHT, not to be mistaken for white, and creamy, and the flashes are bigger than those from full cut melee, such as those of a Tiffany soleste halo. The single cut melee, even though F, will complement your center stone.

You are going to have a contrast between a vintage faceted cushion and tiny round brilliant melee no matter what. It doesn't matter if the melee are 2 - 3 colors lower they will sparkle differently and make the center appear more tinted. In general most setters work with G/H melee and you can't order I/J/K melee but ask Victor what he can source I'd do full cuts. If you want to minnimize the contrast and make the stones appear whiter you could use rose gold.

You could try taking the F and one of the Ks and have victor put them on top of a plate of rose gold beside the melee and take a few pictures to see which one you like best.

If the surprise isn't that important you might even show the wearer some K colored stones and see if they prefer greater size with tint over colorless and smaller or vice versa.

Thanks tele...this is a great point. She likes warmth but doesn't want it to look too yellow. I think a K would be a good diamond for that. Thanks also for posting the links to the other rings. Those were very helpful!

Thanks dollyanjuli - this is a beautiful ring. This certainly helps me to visualize what I'm looking at. Thanks again for the input!

Thanks LLJsmom: you bring up some great points. Especially as they pertain to the single cut vs full cut melee. I'm really looking forward to this. This was my gut reaction as far as stone color and melee, but as I read more, I get more unsure. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything during this whole process. Thanks again!

Thanks sharonyanddave: I am getting this ring in rose gold and in a single cut melee vs full cut melee. And as LLJsmom brought up, the flashes will be a little different than a brilliant melee. That is a great idea to have Victor put an F and K on a rose gold plate. Thanks!!

Re: Help/advice with engagement ring; Canera rose gold halo

Whether a stone looks good in rose gold has a lot to do with the undertone color. If it is brownish, it looks great in rose gold. If it is yellow, then that may look better in yellow gold. Ask Victor if the stones face up yellow or more champagne or brown. Hopefully they are more champagne color and can go either way.

I prefer the setting like it is pictured with the cathedral sides.

I like the K VS1 the best as far as cut goes.
