I have a question. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on how high a stone should be set in an E-ring. I do not like the lower settings. This is for a bezel set ring. I am having it custom made.

Here are my choices....

"If the band is 4.5mm and the stone is 8mm in diameter you would be looking at it sitting about 6.8mm above the band which is about 1/4 inch.

If the band is 4mm and the stone is 8mm in diameter you would be looking at it sitting about 7.3mm above the band.

If the band is 4mm and the stone is 7mm in diameter you would be looking at it sitting about 6.2mm above the band.
"

Is 7.3 too high or how about 6.8? What does everyone think? I need to give my jeweler an answer. For example, how would this compare to a tulip set solitare, or would it look so high that it would look wrong?

Thanks for the imput!

The height of the ring will depend a lot on the depth of the stone. If you are talking about an 8 mm diamond, the depth could be about 5 mm. By the time you add 1 to 2 mm for the shank and head, it could easily sit up 7 mm.

I prefer a little height on my rings. My 2 ct diamond was previously set in a solitaire and measured 8 mm in height from the shank to the table of the diamond. It was probably a little high for most people, but I liked it.

It would be great to try some rings on... IMO, sidestones or those cathedral style settings (anything with some element of design leading from the lowest to the highest point above the hand without any sudden transition) make high rings allot more confortable to wear.

I don't think I have seen many rings more than 10mm high (from hand to table of main stone) - that very high, I think, the ring is higher than most fingers are thick! 5-6mm for the same is called "low". The 6-7mm you talk about is a reasonable middle ground and larger stones would end up like that anyway. A simple setting usually adds 1-2 mm to the It depth of the main stone.

With a basket setting you may not want to have the walls of the bezel creating a high "funnel" high on top of the finger. There are ways to avoid that - just one thing to consider.

Speaking of solutions to the "funnel" problem

here's a layered bezel:

Hope some of this helps

PS: about the comparison with the tulip style... either (and any) model can be made high or low. It remains your choice...

Ana,
Beautiful setting, do you have specs on it? I am in the process of trying to figure out heights and diamond sizes and shank sizes too. I am looking for a halo setting like the one you have shown.
Thanks. MaryAnn

It comes from here - there are specs and measurements on the page; The shop makes these rings, so versions should be feasible.

Hope this helps
