I'm new, celebrating 20th anniversary and getting new wedding set. Getting Gabriel er7500 and have been working with local jeweler who is great but tight budget is leading me to consider J cushion, it is VVS2 and cut beautifully, jeweler was very please when it came in. It was placed in setting for me to view and faced up very white in store and in window but when taken outside under cloudy skies looked very warm toned depending on angle (I knew I would be color sensitive before even seeing it but maybe I need to get passed that). Also saw an H I wouldn't consider due to clarity and just not nice looking at all but even that looked warm to me outside. Jeweler is going to do addition searching but said it would be very difficult to find anything better in my price range. I guess I'm feeling like I need to either increase my budget or go with with VVS2 J. I have read that cushions can be difficult with color. I guess I'm just talking through this, lol.

Is it a GIA J? And what is the weight of it?

And what is your budget? And what do you want from it?

It is AGS, .82 but fit perfect into 1ct setting 5.75x5.6 so I think it is a little shallow but was looking at it next to 1.03 cushion and looked same size. Budget is $4850 which includes ring and ring lists for 2640 but they must have brought that down a bit because I think stone was 2700. The stone had a ton is sparkle and was very clean even in scope. Ring has good size halo stones so you could see the warm hue of center stone outside, it wasn't bad at all but I could see it wasn't sure what to make of it as I haven't seen many other stones. It blew the h stone away because it was cut and clarity.

I think you can do much better. Here are some gorgeous, well performing cushions in your budget that are WAY above J or even I color.
 :
2500: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.84-carat-f-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-1837208
2570: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.80-carat-e-color-vs1-clarity-sku-1922304
2580: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.80-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-sku-1930190
2700: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.82-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-1947547
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.80-carat-d-color-vs1-clarity-sku-1123631

They have nice spread as well. And a well cut stone like this is going to look bigger than a stone with compromised performance.

Gorgeous BIG beautiful antique cushion with chunky facets: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.83-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-sku-1028588 2650

So. I hate to tell you, it's not the budget that is the problem. It's your jeweler.

If you call ID Jewelry, then can call in the stones you like from the above for you. And probably beat the price of your jeweler on that Gabriel setting to boot (they typically go below MSRP).

And you won't have to have a stone with a tint that is going to bother you.

Gypsy is correct - take her advise as she will steer you in the right direction. And you will end up with a lovely stone. Good luck and I hope you find a very nice stone within your budget. :wavey:

Thank you for the advice. I'll look into this but can't imagine buying a stone without seeing it but I will look at it! :)

So being new to this is it really as easy as making the purchase and sending it back if you don't like it??? Through James Allen? I'm in upstate NY and will be in the city tomorrow so I was thinking about going to the IDJ store. The halo on the ring is f-g which I didn't realize so no wonder the j looked the way it did in some light.

Yes, it is very easy - especially through James Allen since they offer free returns. However, if you'll be in the city and feel more comfortable viewing stones in person, I DEFINITELY recommend calling IDJ today and speaking to Yekutiel. Tell him what you are looking for and about the stones Gypsy listed for you and see if he can call them in for tomorrow. That way you have stones to physicially view while you are there! Good luck!! :appl:

Yes, go by IDJ and talk with Yuketiel. He will probably need more time to get stones in that meet your spec but he will assure
you that he can find you something you'll love in your budget (without a lot of tint). IDJ can probably bring in the JA stones that
Gypsy pointed out. You can ask when you talk to him. I'm not sure what the chances are of him bringing in the stones for tomorrow
if you contact him today. He may be able to get some in so maybe you should call him now to see if he can get some in. Tell him
you are a Pricescope member and you've heard that he can do good things. I'm thinking you might be color sensitive and may want
to stay high in the color range like DEF maybe G. Yuketiel can help you figure that out.

I see ac117 just posted saying what I just said but I'm going to post this anyway!

My round and cushion diamond were listed on BN & James Allen. It was Yekutiel at IDJ who called in the diamonds and showed them to me for me to see in person. IDJ price was lower than both Blue Nile and James Allen. I ended up buying both my diamonds from IDJ.
Yekutiel and the family at IDJ are all wonderful to work with.

Good Luck!

Going to idj tomorrow afternoon, they pulled one diamond I asked for but guess they were busy so didn't have much time to pull others but hope I can see a few and look at their settings. How do you go about seeing them in daylight? The stone at home looked awesome in all lighting and in window but really changed outside?

Glad to hear you made an appointment with IDJ. If you want to see the diamond outside, just tell him that and they can have his wife Tammy or his sister walk downstairs with you to the street so you can see the diamond in daylight. Also but remember his store is in a building upstairs on the 3rd floor. He is not at street level so you will need to be escorted out of his office to see the diamond outside.
Good Luck!

You ask to go outside. Usually with staff or security guard. Of just by Windows if they have them.

The Diamond Fairy. I LOVE THAT. That is my favorite compliment EVER.

Of course that's because Diamond Fairy MUST mean wings with rose cuts and pave. In three tone: platinum, rose and yellow gold.

And a tiara.

Quick question: can someone help me with what I should expect for negotiation of price??? Do they negotiate? One of the diamond I'm looking at is $3170 which is a little over budget.

And can they pull diamonds directly from Bluenile?

Yekutiel will give you the best price. He can usually do better than the other vendors listing the stone. And he can have stones brought in that are located in NYC. So if the stone listed on Bluenile is in NYC - Yekutiel can usually have it brought in for you to see. Good luck - you're in good hands with Yekutiel at IDJ!! :wavey:

OMG I bought a ring! I'm very excited but also feel like vomiting, lol. I wasn't planning on buying today! I worked with Tammy, she was fantastic! I ended up only looking at two diamonds because we put all the h's aside as I'm a little color sensitive and one g was better than the other. It was a modified brilliant crushed ice look which I didn't think I wanted but I actually really liked the way the one looked in the halo setting. They had my actual setting so that was awesome. In the end it was less than at home and went from j to g, the j had other beautiful parameters but in the end color was more important to me. I was good and I'm waiting to get the matching band to stay on budget but I want to get it as soon as I can!!! I'm going to get a gift certificate for the woman at home that helped me so much. I can't believe I'm actually getting into the ring I wanted. Three week wait as they ordered my size.

Thankful I came in here yesterday and thankful to you all for helping me out!!

Your post is so funny. So much enthusiasm. Hey you went, picked out the stones with your own eyes and balanced the four C's in the way that made sense to you. And got the exact setting you wanted. Sounds like a great deal to me. And you saved money on top of it. Great job!

Happy for you, Jenkay! Once you've educated yourself (or had the help of lovely PSers) in terms of the 4 C's and some of the balancing that goes into finding a stone I think sometimes the most important thing to do is choose with your own eyes! Particularly when dealing with a trustworthy place like IDJ so you know that what you're looking at is of good quality. Can't wait to see pics!

I can't wait to see your ring! Yekutiel helped my daughter and her fiancé find a beautiful Gabriel setting and a nice round diamond. We did it all over email! The ring came in and my daughter is in love!
